Pic related Lenny Cohen + Joni Mitchell + Bowie come to mind immediately. There's countless others of course, but I guess just to give you an idea of what I'm into.
Contemporary lyricists? Willing to listen. Resistant to a lot of hip hop, doesn't hit me emotionally properly, but I know a lot of great lyricists are in that genre and I'm willing to check stuff out. I like Kendrick Lamar. I think Radical Face is really good. Read a Mark Kozelek recommendation in the last thread which yes definitely, the Jesu / Sun Kil Moon album floored me, one of my favorites of the year.
isaac brock (modest mouse). if you don't know what i mean, just listen to one of their first four albums.
Ryan Hall
Underrated lyricist, and his german lyricism is even better.
Mason Cruz
Amen, man. Amen.
There's a song where he talks to his young-self. I think it's a unique idea
Jacob Gomez
Dan Barrett
Evan Perez
Holy shit no
Although it would make sense after Mariannes death
Tyler Taylor
You should check his works with Teho Teardo, it's basically Blixa singing/speaking over fantastic neo classical instrumentals.
>What if in paradise there are no huris waiting? >What if but all you get are grapes, succulent grapes? >What if it’s all just a mistake in the translation? youtube.com/watch?v=RV9opcVjJFM
Kayden Wright
>Well Marianne, it's come to this time when we are really so old and our bodies are falling apart and I think I will follow you very soon. Know that I am so close behind you that if you stretch out your hand, I think you can reach mine.
>mfw is right
Jaxon Long
If dubs he releases his Black Star two days before he kills himself this month.
Wunderbar!! :P Deutsch, eine schöne Sprache... Haven't taken it in a few years, but I love it. Will have to check this guy out!
Awesome, yeah, the only song I've loved by them is The World at Large, what album should I listen to? On a semi-similar note, I guess, I think Doug Martsch from Built to Spill is awesome. Randy Describes Eternity remains the only song to give me a full-fledged panic attack, so big ups for that.
Interesting. I've never listened to the lyrics that much. But certain things stand out, you know. "I wanna feel like I feel when I'm asleep."
I agree with you, with him and harvey gone the Bad Seeds lack of a strong guitarist. He was supposed to appear on Push The Sky Away, i hope he's on the new album.
Alexander Nelson
yeah, randy described eternity is god-tier. check out Lonesome Crowded West or Moon and Antartica first. youtube.com/watch?v=8l8m7svm7OI
Ethan Jackson
If trips lenny is saved
Daniel Howard
Can't handle paranoid shit right now lol but I'll download Lonesome Crowded West I've always liked the cover
Luke White
Edit the Sad Parts is the best thing he's ever penned.
Andrew Moore
I have Still Smiling on CD and Spring on vinyl!
Dominic Ramirez
Same mate. He was going to go together again but something happened
Dylan Garcia
Is there a pepe in this or am I losing my mind
Chase Phillips
John Darnielle and Nick Torres for me.
Jeremiah Walker
Fuck, how could I have forgotten John Darnielle? Like, the quintessential example. I love him on twitter too hahah.
Nick Torres I don't know. Do you like Cassino or Northstar more? I guess I can download one from both but what's page for Northstar is a fucking mess…
Luke Cox
>Fuck, how could I have forgotten John Darnielle? Like, the quintessential example. I love him on twitter too hahah. Yeah, he's fucking great. I almost exclusively listened to him my junior and senior years of high school.
>Nick Torres I don't know. Do you like Cassino or Northstar more? I guess I can download one from both but what's page for Northstar is a fucking mess… Northstar is like early 2000's pop punk but somehow not shitty like the rest of it. Cassino is more "grown up" (it's folk). I like Northstar's lyrics more but I like Cassino's music more.
Nolan Rodriguez
John Darnielle Elliott Smith Leonard Cohen John K Samson Conor Oberst
Was immediately resistant to Northstar… Gonna try to get over the fact that this reminds me that I enjoyed Dashboard Confessional once in my life and then try listening to this again hahah.
The Cassino is more my speed now. Just downloaded Sounds of Salvation. Thanks!!
Surprised to see a Conor Oberst mention on Sup Forums because it seems antithetical to Sup Forums-cool but great point!
John Young
Well, I posted an acoustic version of a song, which I probably shouldn't have. This is more what Northstar sounds like. Early 2000's pop punk but with good lyrics. >youtube.com/watch?v=XFoHtbDhmKg
You should download Kingprince from Cassino too. It's fantastic.
Hudson Cook
yeah, i figured. bright eyes isn't nearly as well loved as they used to be around here. they aren't really my favorite anymore either, but i really appreciate the quality of the lyrics still.
Noah Cox
There's a pepe don't worry
Hudson Miller
This makes all the difference hahah. Still not crazy about it but better I think. I'm gonna get to know "Sounds of Salvation" first but if I like it no doubt I'll get the other one.
Yeah, to be honest, there's some decent stuff that came out of that sort of hopelessly sincere kind of music. Decemberists and Okkervil River come to mind.
Christian Thompson
Robert Hunter
Jordan Adams
Thank you user
Gavin Kelly
no sufjan stevens? he is lyrics god
Liam Carter
>Elliott Smith Eh, I love the guy's music, think he's a good songwriter, but purely as a lyricist, nah, I don't know about that. He has his moments though. The first verse of Everything Means Nothing to Me blows me away every time I hear it.
As for Conor, I can't stand his vocal style most of the time. The affectation kind of kills it for me, doesn't seem genuine. I agree with Darnielle and Cohen though. Even if I think Darnielle sometimes falls into the same category as Oberst when it comes to sounding inauthentic.
Thomas Brown
"I Didn't Understand" was big for me as a sad ~14 y/o
>there's nothing here that you'll miss, i can guarantee you this is a cloud of smoke >tfw you don't deserve love
Darnielle's lyrics inauthentic you think? I don't see it at all! But I only listen to a few of his albums so it's hard for me to say I have a handle on him as a lyricist totally.
I was just thinking about the Gacy song yesterday. Really bold and really beautiful. That was the first time I heard someone extend compassion to an "evil" person so it stands out to me.
Bentley Scott
Oh shit
Easton Edwards
i remember that song showcasing Suffy's christian morality in a very tasteful way, i really gotta relisten to illinois desu
also Futile Devices is his best song period imo, AoA best album
Lincoln Hughes
Christian morality, that's exactly right.
Shit, yeah, AoA is unstoppable. Is it cliche to say that Impossible Soul is a masterpiece? I really think it is, in its variety and all, and how it ends with that beautiful quiet bit.
>I think of you as my brother although that sounds dumb
"Words are futile devices" is the writer/lyricist's lament. When the only way you know how to communicate is words… Sad stuff.
Isaac Myers
>tfw I found Sounds of Salvation at thrift store for $2.00
Jaxon Watson
nah, they're fine without him the bad seeds have changed but warren is just as good at what he does I just wish we had another album like AB/LoO before they moved on to the garage sound and now the loopey stuff (all of which I love immensely of course)
and since is a thread about lyricists
>You leapt into the abyss, but find >It only goes up to your knees
>Life shuffles past at a low interest rate >In the money-coloured meadows >And all the interesting shadows >They leap up, then dissipate
Jeremiah Jackson
To be honest, they changed a lot after Blixa left. Nick also claimed that Blixa influenced A LOT when it came to their music. I prefer Blixa-era tho. I'd love to see more of it
Nick Cave ain't a bad lyricists too
Andrew Gutierrez
God no, please dear god no >see you down the road
Brody Russell
>Bowie >good lyricist You're joking right
Brayden Johnson
Lou Reed That dude from the Replacements
Michael Wright
Bows and flows of angel hair and ice cream castles in the air and feather canyons everywhere, I've looked at clouds that way. But now they only block the sun, they rain and snow on everyone. So many things I would have done but clouds got in my way.
I've looked at clouds from both sides now, from up and down, and still somehow it's cloud illusions I recall. I really don't know clouds at all.
Moons and Junes and ferris wheels, the dizzy dancing way that you feel as every fairy tale comes real; I've looked at love that way. But now it's just another show. You leave 'em laughing when you go and if you care, don't let them know, don't give yourself away.
I've looked at love from both sides now, from give and take, and still somehow it's love's illusions that I recall. I really don't know love at all.
Tears and fears and feeling proud, to say "I love you" right out loud, dreams and schemes and circus crowds, I've looked at life that way. But now old friends are acting strange, they shake their heads, they say I've changed. Something's lost but something's gained in living every day.
I've looked at life from both sides now, from win and lose, and still somehow it's life's illusions I recall. I really don't know life at all.
Lucas Williams
Unproductive.

Wew lads forgetting one of the big ones.
Parker Harris
Aaron Weiss from mewithoutYou is a really excellent lyricist.
"Caught me making eyes at the other boatman's wives, and heard me laughing louder at the jokes told by their daughters I'd set my course for land, but you well understand it takes a steady hand to navigate adulterous waters The propeller's spinning blades held acquaintance with the waves as there's mistakes I've made no rowing could outrun The cloth blowing on the mast like to say I've got no past but I'm nonetheless the librarian and secretary's son with tarnish on my brass and mildew on my glass, I'd never want someone so crass as to want someone like me but a few leagues off the shore, I bit a flashing lure and I assure you, it was not what I expected it to be! I still taste its kiss, that dull hook in my lip is a memory as useless as a rod without a reel To an anchor ever-dropped, seasick yet still docked Captain spotted napping with his first mate at the wheel, floating forgetfully along, with no need to be strong We keep our confessions long and when we pray we keep it short
I drank a thimble full of fire and I'm not ever coming back
Oh, my God!
I do not exist we faithfully insist while watching sink the heavy ship of everything we knew If ever you come near I'll hold up high a mirror Lord, I could never show you anything as beautiful as You"
Brayden Davis
Another one is Captain Beefheart. People like to write him off sometimes as a real kook, but he was super smart and wrote some awesome surreal lyrics. "Making love to a vampire with a monkey on my knee" is one of my favorites.
"Making love to a vampire with a monkey on my knee The pond shined dry like a ladies compact Lilies leaped like flat green hearts with white hearts Squirting yellow pollen…cocks… Ferns ran like cool spades.. fossils. ..away from rocks Bees echoed dark carbon hums that dashed in nothing Gnats fucked my ears ‘n nostrils Hit my brain like hones ‘n numbed t’ nothing Wings stuck on liquid bones Making love to a vampire with a monkey on my knee"
Hunter White
9th and hennepin is just classic waits.

Joni Mitchell.......
God played Bass in her band.
Aiden Ramirez
what did you mean by this
Wyatt Ortiz
Jaco Pastorius played bass in her band
Dylan Moore
Jaco Pastorius is the greatest Bass Player of all time.
Nathaniel Wilson
do we really need the greatest anything of all time? It is completely subjective and unimportant. He was amazing though
Caleb Flores
The worst lyricists are the ones who try too hard to be poetic and end up being cliche and stupid So basically everyone itt
Austin Sanchez
Oh, you don't like poetry. Cool!
Ian Hughes
Not poetry. Kitsch.
Thomas Watson

> Kendrik Lamar How old are You?
Douglas Pearce from Death in June is a good lyricist. Bowie is overrated as fuck.
Jackson Reed
>2016 >being mean on Sup Forums
Matthew Lee
Billy Sheehan, Jonas Hellborg and all of the top class Bass Players will agree that no one is a brilliant as Jaco Pastorius.
