In the court of the crimson king
The reason there isn't a pure rock essential is because there are far more lists in other publications/websites/etc giving a list of essentials, whereas there aren't anywhere near as much for jazz and classical.
And knowing Sup Forums it'd have a bias towards art rock, punk, post-punk and their derivatives.
Black Sabbath - Master of Reality
>publications/websites/etc
Who cares?
Brand New - The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me
Weezer - The Blue Album
Death from Above 1979 - You're a Woman, I'm a Machine
Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights
S U N
B A T
H E R
Because there's no point in making this. Hell, the Sup Forumscore chart already accomplishes this because Sup Forums has a tendency to listen to rock albums.
Velvet underground and nico
Talk Talk
Fugazi
Burzum
Bob Dylan
St Vincent
Can
Lets bring some No Wave here
Fugazi
Bob dylan
Velvet underground
Slint
Frank zappa
Can
Hendrix
Butthole surfers
Sonic youth
>filth
Loveless
Zen Arcade
Tago Mago
Faust s/t
Mr. Bungle
Double Nickels on the Dime
Just put in Scaruffi's 9/10's.
>rock
Why even bother
Mac Demarco - 2
In all honesty there should be 5 albums per subgenre. It would feel more organised.
Asking Sup Forums to make essential charts is stupid. The point is that they're supposed to be historically significant, critically acclaimed or popular but people in these threads just seem to rec their faves.
>rock
Essential charts here have never been like that
This is Sup Forumscore but at least it's really fucking good
Like Clockwork
Why? Rock is shit.
...
...
Yeah, usually they are. When people make them by themselves, they're usually doing it as introductions to a genre. There's a certain amount of bias towards personal taste but not near as much as in these threads.
And not a single mention of any country, folk, blues, heartland or pop rock.
>country, folk, blues,
>rock

Here's your spoon user. Open wide.
>And not a single mention of any country rock, folk rock, blues rock, heartland rock or pop rock.
Led Zeppelin I
loveless for shoegaze, hot rats for jazz rock, welcome to sky valley (or master for reality) for stoner rock, led zeppelin 2 for hard rock..
the piper at gates of dawn for pyschedelic rock
trout mask replica for experimental rock, duster - stratosphere for slowcore, abbey road for pop rock, ok computer for alternative rock, white light white heat for noise rock, unkown pleasures for post punk, london calling for post punk, spiderland for math rock, relationship for command (or fugazi's repeater) for post hardcore, fun house for garage rock, highway 62 revisited for folk rock, ziggy stardust for glam rock, maggot brain (or blood sugar sex magik) for funk rock, if i should fall from grace with god for celtic rock...
The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway deserves his own space, in the genre of Rock Opera
Swans - Filth for No Wave
>inb4 it's not No Wave
>unkown pleasures for post punk, london calling for post punk
The Modern Dance is better than both
after the gold rush for country rock and surfer rosa (or dolittle) for indie rock
>The Modern Dance
maybe you are right, but i think the modern dance can be tagged as "art punk"
santana - abraxas for latin rock
Genre is way too massive to make a cohesive list, t b h.
Country rock.
this
Drive Like Jehu - s/t
Yes it's better than Yank Crime, that loses energy after half of the album
agreed, people are posting bands like duster in this thread. That band wasn't very well known or influential. Sure it's pretty good but as a whole it doesn't fit in to the an essential rock allbums chart.
Also people on Sup Forums like to pick bands that are more obscure, note how no one will ever post chuck berry or older rock because it's boring to our ears because were desensitized to it. This thread will be truly shit; there is a half serious and academic pretension in these threads that is obviously missplaced. The only times that something of value comes out of these threads is a Sup Forumscore chart, but tho are only good for being able to shitpost here, or if a single user makes one like the poster in reply said.
>Bob dylan
>rock
uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
>loses energy after half of the album
you just don't understand the progression.
Folk Rock is still rock.
Almost everything after and including Bringing it All Back Home is rock.
uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
youtube.com
What would you call this then?
You mean after half the songs. Yank crime is so tedious and placid
The Beatles - white album
Big Star - Radio City
David Bowie - Low
Cheap Trick - Cheap Trick
Blondie - Plastic Letters
The Cars - The Cars
The Knack - Get The Knack
Rush - Permanent Waves
The Police - Zenyatta
Dead Kennedys - Plastic Surgery Disasters
REM - Murmur
The Replacements - Tim
Dinosaur Jr. - Youre Living All Over Me
As long as these make it, I'll be satisfied
I don't know how what I said differs from what you said
After Luau (which in and of itself is god-tier) it all just gets so slow and uninspired compared to what came before
Doppelganger (I'd prefer the Ghostship Demos, but Doppelganger is more recognisable/ popular here afaik)
Colors
Deloused in the Comatorium
Francis the Mute
Tiger & The Duke (isn't mentioned much around here, but is so Sup Forums I can't see it not being there)
TTNG - Animals, although I'm not sure what the most popular TTNG album is here
Personal pick although I've never seen it mentioned:
Meet Me in St. Louis - Variations on Swing
I mean halfway through each song. Everything goes on too long, even on the shorter songs
I'm fine with the longer lengths 2bh
Just don't like the drop off after Luau
The Residents - Not Available
So much this
>50 posts
No one mentions Elvis Presley, people are just gonna keep spewing some obscure mu meme indie shit instead of actual historically significant rock musicians.
>lol why would you list the rolling stones fuck "dadrock" just listen to death grips xD
Never change Sup Forums

lol
>King Crimson
Lol no
Yes. Whether you like it or not.
>a u followed by a bunch of h
i love this meme but how about some actual arguments? those anons are right
No. King Crimson is a shit band and is really not representative of rock and roll at all.
You don't have a say in this you powerless loser. King Crimson is a groundbreaking band praised by many, and In The Court is a very iconic rock album. It doesn't matter if some moron on the internet thinks otherwise.
The Number of the Beast by Iron Maiden. Pretty top notch album.
>implying
Even if you like that shit album it isn't any use reccommending it to someone just getting into rock
Recommend some representative rock and not a rock band that sounds like they want to be a classical ensemble. You can already listen to classical and jazz and not worry about a shallow rockist interpretation of it
you couldn't even be more wrong. king crimson, whether you like it or not, is a great representative for an immense amount of bands and subgenres of rock music
>a rock band that sounds like they want to be a classical ensemble
this is literally 80% of rock music. ever heard of rock operas? whether you like it or not, that shit album represents more than elveys prestley
Prog rock. That's it.
Prog rock is to rock as smooth jazz is to jazz. Now, you wouldn't go recommending Kenny G to people who want to into jazz just because he is representative of the most popular form of jazz since the 80s?
why did i write elvis like that
Gr8 b8 m8
>this is literally 80% of rock music.
Kek maybe 80% of what you listen too but smart people know that prog is for kids
In a chart of 50 albums, you think there should only be by-the-books rock n roll? Notice how I only included one progressive rock album on my list. A balance between less conventional rock and more conventional rock is ideal.
>rockist
Fucking idiot
>Prog rock. That's it.
how about post-punk, post-rock, alternative rock, heavy metal, pretty much everything except straight punk rock
>Prog rock is to rock as smooth jazz is to jazz.
are you even trying to make an argument here? lmao
...why do people think king crimson only influenced prog rock again? oh rite cause people on this board know shit about rock music
Howlin Wolf, Bo Diddley, Johnny Burnette ,Gene Vincent,Little Richard, Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly for early Rock and Roll
This is a funny post, come to think of it. He basically just admitted he knows nothing of rock music AND classical ensembles.
>how about post-punk, post-rock, alternative rock, heavy metal, pretty much everything except straight punk rock
"no"
Crimson only influence prog and psych (which are shit genres) and math rock (a slightly less shit genre)
>are you even trying to make an argument here? lmao
Both are cheesy, boring, imitative, and only enjoyed by idiots
The Velvet Underground deserves to be there. King Crimson, no.
Rubies or Streethawk
That's a retarded analogy. Kenny G is dumbed down, pop jazz. Progressive rock is more complex rock music. Rock is varied and broad. Why would you want a narrow chart that only covers the most traditional sounding rock albums? The point of a genre chart is to introduce a wealth of variety within a genre so that a listener can expand based in which albums they like. The kind of chart you are striving for is retarded and wouldn't help a listener at all.
You forgot Chuck Berry you nigger
>King Crimson, no
Well, it's like I said, it really doesn't matter what you think
Someone already posted chuck berry the ones i posted weren't mentioned
Progressive rock is dumbed down classical and jazz you mongoloid
It is not representative of the genre and does not play to rock's strengths. It's regressive, old-time revivalist rock. Aka shit
I'd put the VU and Talking Heads on a chart like that. Not KC
If you're serious about this (I'm assuming you're not because nobody's given any chart based off the albums mentioned in this thread) instead of including the original 50s albums filled with filler, Loud, Fast and Out of Control: The Wild Sounds of 50s Rock and Roll is a relatively comprehensive collection of all the major artists from back in the day (Elvis, Bo Diddley, Chuck, Little Dick, Buddy Holly, etc) with most of their major tracks as well as some of the lesser known artists of the day. Rock and roll in those days was a singles driven genre, so it makes sense to have a collection with a wide variety of singles.
How? King Crimson was agreed upon by the most knowledgeable and intelligent critics of the time to be shit.
this is literally not an argument. they influenced more heavy metal bands than anything else in the late 60's/early 70's other than black sabbath themselves. post-punk bands in the 80's were talking more about king crimson than anything else made in that time. every single british post-rock band has claimed king crimson as an influence.
this is fact.
meanwhile not even a single math rock band has claimed king crimson has a big influence. rush maybe. post-hardcore bands like bitch magnet definitely. which all use orchestral themes with rock music instruments.
"psych" isn't a thing. psychedelic rock is, and was already a thing before king crimson existed.
kinda feels like you know shit about what you're talking about 2bh.
but hey all good. even if they are only enjoyed by idiots, there are more idiots in rock music than anything else, therefore it's the perfect representation.
>In a chart of 50 albums, you think there should only be by-the-books rock n roll?
Yes, that's why it's called Rock ESSENTIALS
Bangers vs Fuckers has to be included. 18 minutes of absolute garage rock perfection.
>dumbed down classical and jazz
Then why didn't you say that instead of implying it was dumbed down rock? You're incorrect either way, but at least your analogy makes sense this way. You're still wrong about King Crimson btw
If we're making a comprehensive chart (which a chart with the title essential should be) then we'd ought to put on an album that's representative of a subgenre of rock. You can argue that there are better examples, I've only touched the surface of prog so I wouldn't know, but it's asinine to not include any progs when it was such a staple of rock in the 70s. There more prog releases that decade than punk and metal releases combined.
