it's scattered. there's no real gothic rock any more but you can find remnants of its influence in various metal genres, neofolk, trip hop and shoegaze. I don't know, the post-punk and industrial sounds kinda ran their course

sure, my point was more against the hipsterization of Goth via bands like Salem and the Horrors which ignore the aggressive punk influence in favor of appearing trendy and "dark". Many goth bands adopt an effeminate and glam-influenced image but still make aggressive and hard-hitting music. there's more to Goth than the Cure and 80's post-punk btw

Goth lost it's punk roots. Bauhaus, The Cure, Siouxsie Sioux, Alien Sex Fiend, Christian Death, Sex Gang Children, Joy Division, etc, all started as punk bands.
They're now all dance-hall, electronic bands doing darkwave, or pseudo-industrial, or 80s new wave nostalgia.
There was a bit of a revival about 10 years ago with bands like Written in Ashes, Bella Morte, Disjecta Membra, Cinema Strange, etc... but they're just turning out the same dumb dance music as everybody else these days...
