How do you guys deal with the crushing pain that your music, which is the most important thing in your life, is incredibly average and no one is ever going to care about it and you are a failure of a human being?
I have never cared so deeply but I finished a track today that I made specifically for someone else to listen to, only because all the rest of my tracks are too shit and I was embarrassed to show them to her. And guess what this one is shit too.
I've been doing this for years, I am now objectively a failure and I think from now on I will just stop telling people that I make my own music. For years there has been plenty of excuses, shitty equipment, new to producing, don't know how to master properly etc. Now there are none, I have everything I need, I just suck.
Anyone else know this feel?
Don't be such a pussy about it. You gotta change your outlook on life and yourself. Just follow your intuition, stop second guessing. Make music for yourself, not the expectations of other people
>plenty of excuses
just learn more production and read.
the internet is rather rich in information
don't do anything for other people. It's literally retarded.
Success starts with making music that you like. If you don't like your own music, nobody else will. Trust me, a lot can come from just having a positive attitude & putting the work in. I went from making some garbage chiptune music to some really nice beats that I actually enjoy within the span of a year. If I can do it, so can you.
this guy never actually wanted to make music. he just did it to look cool to other people. but what the hell do i know.
I mean I'm always going to make music, and I always just do whatever I feel like in spite of getting mostly negative feedback online and fairly unenthusiastic responses from my friends. It's just embarrassing I guess, like "Oh you make music, I'd like to listen to it!"
No, you can't listen to it because you will think less of me as a human being for what you hear. But then you come across even worse than if you had just played them your fucking bullshit 'songs'. Like I said, I think from now on I will just not mention it, kind of tough though because I feel like I have to remove the idea of myself as a musician from my self-image and reimagine myself as some schmuck who tries to make music for fun but isn't very good at it.
here's the best intro to my music. It's quite cringe

just follow your heart!
...
I have been learning heaps for years, and am still learning and will continue to do so, its just that I've gotten to the point where I realize if I was ever going to be good then I would be fairly good already.
I do it for myself because I enjoy it, its just that in this particular instance I know someone else is going to want to listen to it.
Not true, I do it because music is the number one thing I've loved my whole life. I've always been slightly embarrassed about the music I made, I think its because I always thought of myself as being 'talented' (and was told so by plenty of other people) but when I get a finished product I realize that I am actually nothing of the sort.
wow, I never thought of it like that! If I follow my heart in future will that make the songs I have done up til now less shit?
Go back to basics son, try to enjoy making music again. I know exactly how you feel
Always being overly critical of one's own work is a sign of a true artist. Because an artist is never satisfied—he wanta to create and build and never stop. If you ever feel like your song IS perfect for everyone, then you're probably a fake artist doing it for money or fame. M
post your sc link
Don't stop sharing with people man, thats one of my personal motivations for making music. Sharing what I love with other people. Even if they will think it's garbage, you have to look past that. People have been telling me the same thing too. I mean at least my friends are nice enough to say they kind of like it. I'm just glad they think I'm worth the time listening too I guess
Eh, what the hell, here's one of my songs
soundcloud.com
I honestly expected garbage, but this is great. I think the only thing you're missing is vocals. Get some features on some of these & you'll be set.
Glad someone else can relate.
I still enjoy making music, I enjoy making every track and even just fucking around making stupid noises that will never become anything. It is my only real love in life and I guess I thought by some magical Disney follow ur dreamz shit that this would eventually translate into it being good.
Haha yeah thanks for the kind words, but sadly even if every true artist is overly critical of themselves, not everyone who is overly critical of themselves is a true artist.
It's in the thread but I'm not saying which one is me, that's not the point and not a good way to get honest feedback.
Cool. Not what I expected at all from that name.
Simple. Ya just gotta believe!
More seriously, I do it for me. I know what I like, and that there are other people that like it as well. It's just a matter of doing what you enjoy.
I do it because it's mentally stimulating and a great outlet to put stress into, as well as being a great way to convey a feeling without words (or with, singing and all lol).
I've been learning so much from people here and just by listening to other anons tunes. I'm always in the process of making something new or tweaking somthing old.
When I feel the despair start to set in I just walk away for a few days, don't even touch it, so I can refresh my creative batteries.
Some of these are pretty good man. Been browsing around and I like what I hear for the most part.
Woah, thanks! Been planning to add vocals actually, shame I'm not a singer myself
I know exactly how that feels. Leads me to constantly re imagine the music I make, I've had tons of alias trying to emulate genres and sounds. The worst part is that every time I finish a new song I can tell it's so much better than my last.
Anyways

Like this stuffs!
I've thought of doing that, just picking one style and trying to master it and coming up with a name and faggy logo and whatever to see if I can actually get fans just because some people like anything that sounds like a half decent take on their favourite style, but there's a few problems with that approach like not being fulfilled and spending a lot of time on it just to make music that is still shit.
Did you have any success?
soundcloud.com
Ep out just now!
electronic fusion or something!
>melancholic beats
Music is important to me, but the youthful idea that it's all that matters to me has passed a while ago. Yes, in the big picture of things, my music won't matter within the next hundred years. No musician works that way though - all musicians worth come from their latest and greatest works. It's what keeps any musician relevant, while putting food on the table. Hundreds of years of music history proves this is how it works.
I'd encourage you to think more about succeeding for your own reasons. If you only want to improve on a track-by-track basis as a goal (i.e. writing singles), go for it. If you want to start groups and start touring then learn how to do that.
Just, remember.
>You're only as good as your latest and greatest work.
>Your band is only as good as your weakest link.
>And after all that, your chances of success is more about who you know that what you know or create.
Let THAT be all motivation you need to find success for yourself. Thirst for it.
LOBO ?

reccs from the start based on my ultimate opinion:
(that's pretty dope btw)
(atleast one of his songs I know)
(pretty dope if you are a fan of hip hop)
I had my greatest "success" when I was working on dnb music, and I love dnb. But it wasn't fulfilling, I've only really enjoyed making music in conceptual forms. EP's, LP's and other long forms of music. I tend to make a lot of experimental stuff for myself which is when I've personal felt the most successful.
