This feels like a bunch of unfinished song demos, how are people comparing this to smile when it lacks the innovative instrumentation and songwriting.

op here, i actually want to discuss this album if anyone is interested

Thanks sexy

discuss these nuts f am

...

what songs on endless you wish were on this album? i thought slide on me was fucking fantastic and the only actually potentially good track on this visual album

The fuck is smile?

you listen to the radio too much

yeah it felt weak. endless had waaay better production

I am. How would you describe the overall sound of the album?

Frank needed to make a fleshed-out version of Honeybaby. Honestly when the drums kicked in on that song, holy shit. Slide on Me also should've been put on Blond.

I think the instrumentation/songwriting is very experimental for an RnB/Alternative RnB album.

Things like the lack of drums, all of the guitars and reverb, the organs, the general sparseness of the instrumentation, all of the unique dynamics between the strings.

Honestly i'm glad nothing from the visual album made it onto this, there were some good tracks but none could have fixed the problems of this album

What is smile?

The sound is very guitar oriented and distorted with frank hiding his vocals most the time which would have been a great artistic statement if the songwriting was half as good as channel orange, an album full of fleshed out songs with this production would have made it an aoty contender

I agree its a really cool sound but none, except for a few, songs have any real emotional weight to them or even sound complete in a songwriting sense

imo i enjoy the minimal style much more to channel orange's maximalist production.

songwriting isn't bad per se, it's just completely different

I'm personally really into the type of sounds and timbres that he gets going on a lot of his songs (like the reverby guitars, organs and keyboard sounds), but I also agree that better and more focussed songwriting would have lifted this album heaps. Quite a lot of the songs just meander along without much meaningful progression and rely solely on the instrumentation and vocals.

Would be really good if he put a bit more emphasis on structure and melody/hooks like was the case for Channel Orange

the different approach he takes makes the songs sound dull

The beach boys album you dolt

But maybe it's a new direction towards unstructured songwriting that i'm not "getting" yet or something. I dunno

>comparing it to Smile
kek, shitty comparison anyways

>it lacks the innovative instrumentation and songwriting
lmfao
damn you're a shit critic

...

this wasnt even me
but this is my point exactly, better songwriting would have led to not only a cool sounding album but a more interesting one too

Fucking kek

Both of those posts were me.

But yeah I agree

I don't know if you guys heard it but the songwriting/sparse production really reminded me a lot of Arthur Russell, specifically World of Echo and Another Thought

>fleshed-out version of Honeybaby
THIS SO FUCKING MUCH

lmao sorry bout that, but i think you'll go crazy finding something you're not getting, either the songs are there or theyre not and if thats a statement that they're dull then that makes a dull album

the album is legit solid. instrumentals were solid and alex g on guitair was goat. Solo(reprise) was a beast song that 3 stacks killed and proved to be the Halley's comet rap game equivalent

I think a fair statement would be that the best songs (while still really good) on Blond aren't much better than the less memorable songs on Channel Orange

again

and I think, as we've said, that it comes down to the songwriting/structures rather than the melodies and/or instrumentation

Holy fuck, I've never listened to any of Ocean's stuff before and I clicked on "Paradise" out of curiosity. Jesus fucking Christ, how talented and unique this guy is, I feel like I just had a near death experience listening to this weird shit. Count me in, fan for life.

completely agree, for me its an album full of seirra leone's

Yep. Perfect song choice for the analogy

Not sure if this is sarcasm or not

rate it out of 10

Sorry Frank, but Beyonce and Blood Orange already made the best RnB alberms of the year

Naw senpai, I kept hearing about Ocean so I got curious. Went on YouTube and clicked on this shit youtube.com/watch?v=iX4o92uyRks

>alberms

did this just happen?

you win the internets today good sir

Listening to Channel Orange after listening to Blonde a few times reminded me how good it was. Way better than blonde.

lol i've never actually heard that song before. Check out Channel Orange and Nostalgia Ultra

I don't think Alex G is on this at all senpai, he's not credited at the very least.

Is it Blonde or Blond?

I'm confused.

fedoras out friendo!

i was pretty weirded out learning that alex is all over this. I met him close to 3 years ago at a house show in my town and he seemed like a nice guy but nowhere near the level of being involved with guys like Frank. He must have made a connection super fast to somebody in the industry

Sonically, this is much better than Channel Orange from the arrangements to the singing. Shit's tight as fuck. I don't think we're really at the point to discuss the lyrics and say they're worse or better yet. I think they're definitely less straight-forward.

smile is shit

8

he's on endless mostly

eh, andre did a lot better in channel orange than this. Also, super rich kids a LOT better than that kendrick shit.

Seigfried, Nights, White Ferrari, and Self Control are all better than anything on Channel Orange.

i really like blonde but jesus endless is utter fucking shit
i'm glad frank didn't let us down in the end

Yeah, he's definitely there for sure.

Listening to "Super Rich Kids" right now, I'm so happy, my expressions change between smiling and blank-faced stares. I didn't expect to find something this wonderful tonight, I can't even express how happy I gave this guy a chance.

Endless is pretty fucking good for what it's trying to be. I really like it.

Did someone finally find the Kendrick track?

Remember Fantano's complaint on Channel Orange that Frank wasn't really doing much with his voice in comparison to say, the Weeknd (his comparison), throw that out of the fucking window.

desu I like it bro,It's like you know it's his style even with the different vibe

dipshit melonfaggot will find a way to hate this album because kanye and tyler worked on it, light six guaranteed

but he threw the songwriting out too

nobody is doing sounds like alex. when your not a little hollywood bitch you dont judge other artists on their connections. so if somebody is making a great sound and you want to work with them you do. its not about "levels" of fame, notoriety, success.

Nights is fucking GOAT. Half-rapping Frank is GOAT!

honestly man......its been out for 6 hours. you cant really judge the lyrical depth or worth just yet..can you? you judged this guys 4 years of work in 6 hour? anyways what kind of retard judges lyrics. its whatever he wanted them to be. you either are into the music or not. i will never understand lyricucks. dont give a shit what people are saying because im not a fag. if it sounds good then cool. as long as your not being obnoxious or completely cringey or out of place......who cares. are you reflecting on these lyrics in hopes to have them impact your life? do you want them to "mean something to you"...this isnt an arcade fire album kiddo.

>contemporary black homosexual american

there is no lyrical depth.

underrated post

Why is Higgs on the "B side" album when it's better than everything on Blond?

I am thoroughly enjoying listening to Self Control.

>fagtano
>a good critic

i wish he just stuck to genres he liked
half the time when he's reviewing something not metal, not rockist, he just half-asses it and claims that whatever he's reviewing isn't innovative enough

pro-tip
if your criticism of something is "it isn't innovative enough" you're basically saying that you wish it didn't fit genre conventions, likely because you don't like the genre to begin with. Way too often he does this with techno, he dismisses it because the track is like 4/4 120bpm and not "innovative enough." Fagtano doesn't get it, really.

The album is average at best to be honest. He tried too hard to be a snowflake, and he completely ruined the best song on the album - Nikes, by pitching his voice to make it sound more edgy and cool.

What the fuck does this mean? Have you really judged all of his lyrics in 8 hours? Are they really so shallow?

idk he said some shit about childhood and some stuff about money and some stuff about friendship and family and death. thats literally all anyone is ever talking about. thats the content of basically every deep lyric of all time. im sure he says some cool insightful stuff in here. honestly does it matter what the fuck he is saying? that was my point. i get impacted by the sound as a whole. i truly dont care about the lyrics on a fucking r&b album. what retard does. thats why its a shit criticism if you are someone who is familiar and likes this genre.

aoty, please dont disagree with me

its as shallow as everything else hes ever released.

Does anyone know the first song? If its frank ocean at all? I like it youtu.be/Lil6YUmxm0c

what your saying is its as shallow as any r&b album released in history..and that if you listened to it and expected to be enlightened then you are stupid, right? so if you are aware that this is what r&b music is, and that this is what to expect, then why are you looking for it in this music? its like critiquing field music for lack of pop structure.

>songwriting
>instrumentation

You mean sampling

i just read about every 4th word you wrote and i have no idea what idea youre trying to tell me so instead of re-reading whatever your fingers typed out, im just going to call you a faggot and tell you that frank ocean is shit and only panders to 16 year olds on tumblr

fucking this... plebs will never understand the genre and respect what it's doing as an R&B album

There's as much instrumentation as there is sampling.

If it does sound like Russell, I might just listen to it. Does it?

Sounds like a suicide note with some good vocals and instrumentation here and there

This was a fucking snooze. HUGE let down compared to Channel Orange. I know he could do better in 1 year, but he opted for 4 years and a garbage album.

thats cool man..and i gotta say i am very aware of pandering to homos and BLM and faggy shit like that..and i have not caught anything that triggered me yet on this album. if it had any outright faggy tumblr tips id instantly delete it desu. i literally am the pander police senpai. nobody hates niggers and fags more than me.

>kohh on nikes

lol what

the nikes in

So is this the official album or are these throwaway? I haven't actually listened to it yet. I thought he was dropping an album of throwaways and then Boys dont cry afterwards.

this is it dude

>how are people comparing this to smile
>comparing this to smile
>this to smile
>to smile
>smile
Someone actually compared with to Smile?

W E W
L A D

i am happy for you user but the new album isnt the classic we wanted

the smile sessions

>tfw haven't listened to Frank ocean at all and feel obligated to listen to this now because of the hype
do I start here or his other albums or mixtapes or whatever

Because that's exactly what Smile is

listen to channel orange and then this

Sierra Leone was a legit standout on cO, the songwriting was incredible and the song built to a real climax. Nothing on this album is touching it.

so what's the name of this album : blonde, blond, blonded?

better than endless or freetown sound, that's for sure
