Wars in Europe used to be between kings and nobles. The common people were just peasants, and usually unaffected by them. A new king would conquer the land, and the peasant would hardly notice, except maybe taxes would go up or something.

It was pretty horrible all around. Luckily we have a period of global stability, or else I fear the world would not survive.
