The European performance of a given league's top teams tells very little about the quality of said league. It could be that French teams just care more about their local competitions than about doing well in CL and EL.

That's pretty much the case for every sports apart from rugby.

However, the leagues being weak doesn't mean the national teams are. France is top 4 or top 8 in a hell fucking lot of sports. It's just that the players get the fuck away as soon as they can to get more monies somewhere else.

There's not much money invested in sports by sponsors in France, and the leagues are by far the most strictly controled financialy-wise, unlike most countries where clubs can get away with anything. No way that a situation as pic related could happen in France.

They produce plenty of talent, have a decent infrastructure for sports and are a decent country to live in, but France chose the path of high taxes on big fortunes which drives off elite football players as well as investors. Hiring an elite player is significantly more costly, because he's only looking at the after-tax income when considering offers.

It's not only taxes, just less qualities in general. Each time a player make 10-15 decent games he moves to a bigger league.
