So...

So, story goes that Pinkerton was slammed in 1996 causing Weezer to go on a five year hiatus before coming back with a poppier sound. And from what I understand, public opinion started to change about Pinkerton as early as the early 2000's. Now, with the fact that it took three years between Make Believe and Red, is it safe to say that Weezer, despite knowing that their first two albums where superior to their newer work, actively avoided going back to that sound until basically being focused to with the last two albums? Either that or is Rivers just fucking retarded?

either label forced them to make shit music or Rivers became afraid of expression emotion in his songs because p4k gave his album a 7

It's the latter
Basically critis kind of killed Weezer but rivers was a pussy,

Their hiatus was closer to one year. In 1998 they already had a new bassist and were trying to make a third album.

Matt Sharp had a lot to do with the sound on the first two records. losing him was a huge mistake.

I honestly don't think Rivers really understands what people liked so much about the first two albums, he just knows they did.

the narrative around pinkerton feels flawed. the blue album didn't get 5/5 reviews across the board either. my theory is that rivers disowned this album not only because of any perceived critical savaging, but simply because it didn't sell. the dude has a thirst for hits, simple as that

'indie cred' means nothing; rivers just wants weezer to be big and popular, which is something he achieves from time to time. but every record he makes corrects the one that came before it. dig this:

>pinkerton was dark and personal
>public reception lukewarm
>makes the most basic pop-rock imaginable with green
>is criticized for being bland and teenybopper
>rocks out on maladroit
>gets blasted for putting out riff-heavy nonsense
>cue make believe, which sells...
>...but is almost universally hated by fans and critics alike for being safe and unremarkable
>puts out red, heavy focus on fun and diversity and wackiness
>deemed too uneven
>records raditude in an attempt to show folks that weezer is still down with contemporary culture
>flops bad
>gets back to the rawk on hurley
>bland and formulaic
>puts out everything will be alright, which is straight up fanservice
>does remarkably well
>immediately goes back to green album-esque pop on the white album

and so on. it's almost like he puts out the personal and revealing stuff out of obligation so that he can get back to cooking up pop songs with his co-writer buddies. he's a weird guy but i like him

I guess I can understand that. I'm just surprised that he's to inconsistent about what he wants to focus on, if there even is anything that is. You're argument almost makes it seem like he just takes the most reactionary route possible instead of just accepting that his music isn't for everyone.

i never liked blue album but this thread made me decide to give pinkerton a chance

not a fan so far when does it get good

apply yourself, nigga.

It starts to get good at around the 0:01 mark of Tired of Sex

I feel like the critical savaging and the fact that it was a flop were pretty synonymous to Rivers.
The fact that people hated it and started doubting Weezer altogether definitely had something to so with it.

yeah if pinkerton wasnt panned theyd have more good albums

what's this from?

It's the Pinkerton Diaries a book Rivers released a few years ago i believe. Here's a download for unfortunately it's in jpg as oppose to pdf.

>you are """""""""""""""18""""""""""""""" year old girl who live in small city in japan

oh rivers

thanks bro. much appreciated.

Rivers is literally fucking retarded.

I can't believe anyone takes Weezer seriously after Ratitude

what did he mean by this?

Rivers himself sad that Pinkerton was like getting drunk and embarrassing yourself at a party, in front of everybody. Couple that with his surgery and addiction to opiates and do you think maybe he doesn't want to relive that era over and over. Dude's happy and centered now, let him be happy.

And Prettiest Girl never made it on an album..
