Been practicing guitar for like 4 or 5 years but I still need to expand my knowledge of scales, mostly for improvisation and to open the gates for more songwriting possibilities
Good scales to improvise with?
Bumpidy bumps bums
the major scale
Major scale is the most important.
do you know the G scale?
and the major pentatonic
Any scales that are in A. If you're a beginner (not for OP but anyone else who sees this thread), pentatonic and A minor are good scales to doodle with.
I am mostly familiar with pentatonics (major and minor) modes, and the C major scale
Op here, mostly talking about obscurer stranger scales
most popular music using those scales.
you know of these bad boys?
yup mane
Try the weeb scales.
why not make your own scale?
pick 5-7 notes from the 12, and there you go!
I never understood modes. Under what circumstances do they sound good? Like what circumstances are good for each one?
jguitar.com/scaledictionary.jsp
just pick one and start practicing
Lydian dominant my nigga
chromatic. learn the intervals between notes and what they sound like, then you will have an easier time playing melodies from your head.
I actually need to know this as well, whenever I try to improvise with them they don't sound that great
Mixolydian
I know that one
I'm pretty fond of the Harmonic Minor desu
How about harmonic and melodic minor?
Know of it and have used it a couple of times, but I do need to get a bit more familiar with it, any good songs to improvise over with those scales?

I don't mean to be a shill but i made an iOS app that's meant to help you practice scales, especially if you want to fuck around with alternate tunings to find cool patterns.
You can also toggle to show the interval number instead of the note letter and you can highlight specific intervals across the fretboard. Also there's a guide that will teach you how to use it and write your own songs.
It's called ScaleGenius and it's free on the app store -- it's my first app so i would appreciate some feedback and suggestions for things to add
Modes always sound good, it just takes a while to get used to them. And if you think normal modes sound fucked up, you ought to try some melodic minor modes, that's when the real fun begins.
I'll have to check it out

look up japanese scales
Persian is the weirdest shit. Not to be confused with Arabic (double harmonic) or phrygian dominant (these are good too).
why the fuck would you give him the outdated version of the modes?
the modern version is:
Ionian
Dorian
Phrygian
Lydian
Mixolydian
Aeolian
Locrian
basically each of them sound good in pretty specific circumstances.
for instance, the mixolydian scale sounds good over dominant 7th chords (C7, D7, G9, F13, etc)
the mixolydian scale has a flatted 7th note (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 b7). it works over dominant 7th chords because they also have a flatted 7th (for instance, C7 has a Bb, whereas in the C major scale it would be a B natural.
A lot of this stuff is just a shitload of practice and ear training honestly. It's hard to get down but there are tons of resources online for this stuff, it's nice to live in the age we live in
How do I into soloing? Hell, how do I write small sections of music to begin with?
I'm going to school for guitar and while the program is mostly focused more on the classical repertoire, I'm focused in flamenco. This gives me a lot of room to change what I play and the teacher even encourages me to come up with my own pieces to either add to a song, or even to make my own. All I'm really supposed to be learning is the various forms flamenco follows, but I can't seem to think off anything, I lack creativity
