It's not all bad. I'll admit I liked Linkin Park when I was a highschool freshman. There's other nu metal songs that I still think are good too, but it seems like music critics and fans both hate the entire genre.

Many people agree that Korn had a good debut album, and I also personally think Slipknot's first 2 albums are great stuff. Deftones is acclaimed by pretty much everyone, but it's brought into question whether they are nu metal at all.
Considering these, I'd like to pretend "nu metal" doesn't exist. But yeah, some bands labeled as nu metal did release some good music.

edgy metal and white rap don't mix
my guess is that nu-metal is, for many people, associated with a demographic that lots of people find repulsive (edgy teenagers). a lot of the hate for nu-metal seems to me to be an attempt by people to distance themselves from the nu-metal fanbase, with evaluation of the music being secondary.
Nu-metal gets a bad rap because of the style that was associated with it, and from the most popular artists in the genre when in reality some great shit came out of it.
Bands like Deftones, Snot, Pulse Ultra, Mudvayne, and Nothingface are some of the best the genre has to offer

i got back into it a little bit thanks to a couple nu metal threads not too long ago actually, Linkin Park don't do anything for me anymore but it turned around on Limp Bizkit and Slipknot big time. i guess that's happening to a bunch of people who grew up with it currently, eh?
