The fact that in needs to be "new" and "innovative" means that Avant Garde cannot even exist as everything takes inspiration from something else, meaning the definition is wrong. The word is just a fucking load of shit to make unusual music sound like its better than it is.

Even though it takes influence from something older it can still be new and revolutionary, fuseing together different ideas pretty much is how you make something new. The Avantgarde term is usually given to artists who interpret music and sound radically different than their peers. For example John Cage or Stockhausen
