What current "punk" genre is on the rise? is it midwest suburban pop punk (Knucklepuck), screaming hardcore(Counterparts), surf punk(The Frights), garage rock/punk(The Orwells), Stoner metal/punk(Jeff the Brotherhood), grunge revival(Charly Bliss), art punk(Parquet Courts), etc?
i know alot of bands of each i mentioned but who is constantly getting good tour dates and venues, and who is consistently getting called for big festivals?
unfortunately the whole album doesnt sound like this, otherwise I think it'd be patrician
Lucas Bell
op you don't really seem to know a lot about punk, most of those bands are not punk
listen to Lumpy & The Dumpers, Coneheads, Glue, Institute, and everything on this youtube channel/mentioned in descriptions and comments on this channel
Some bands that have been on the rise in the past year or two, some longer than that I guess.
Gavin Price
im so glad it got to see them live, really stepped it up with HP
Jonathan Cruz
>there's also loads of darker hardcore shit and gothy deathrock going on recently I can recommend
Name some names. You into Rakta or Shallow Sanction?
Andrew Clark
Check out different shades of grey by No Problem, some good modern hardcore punk
Adrian Davis
Just based on the Frights trajectory I'd say surf punk. Just a couple years ago the way I heard of them was "hey my friends band from (Rival High School) is opening up for (insert tiny local band here). Crazy how quickly they blew up.
Wyatt Howard
Well my band does some surf punk stuff so I'd have to go with that.
Gavin Wilson
Stuff like Fidlar and Wavves seems to be popular with twenty-something music writers.
Knuckle Puck and The Story So Far is big with teenagers who go to Warped Tour every year, they sort of occupy their own little niche in the scene.
Parquet Courts are one of the worst bands I've ever heard in my life, and they're just ripping off what The Strokes did 15 years ago.
I've noticed hybrid metalcore/hardcore bands like Knocked Loose and Counterparts seem to be gaining traction lately and getting booked for festivals, I could see this blowing up in the next year or so.
Chase Miller
>there's also loads of darker hardcore shit and gothy deathrock going on recently I can recommend
I too would like this
Asher Morris
Anasazi, Cemetery, aforementioned Institute, Acrylics, Dame, Haldol
not crazy about Rakta desu, but I'll check out Shallow Sanction
Evan Edwards
>Parquet Courts are one of the worst bands I've ever heard in my life, and they're just ripping off what The Strokes did 15 years ago.
phew lad...
check out PUP, Modern Baseball
Levi Miller
>art punk(Parquet Courts), HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA LMAO WTF AM I READING
Hudson Price
Parquet Courts is brooklyn indie rock garbage
Jose Ross
>wahhhh why are they writing actual poetry, I want more loud punk with angsty arbitrary lyrics into the trash you go
Grayson Morgan
Saw Modern Baseball the other night, very very good show
how long between songs were they tuning their guitars
Jacob Davis
I saw Fidlar live at sziget this year and there was that guy who between two songs stood on the shoulders of his mates in the middle of the pit right in front of the singer and as soon as the camera started filming him and he was on the big screen he let down his pants and started frantically masturbating. Needless to say it was a pretty rough gig.
Jack Kelly
>hates on parquet courts >posts this heat kek, you're so beyond entry level! you sure showed them! oh, and post sister
Hunter Morales
where did I say I hate parquet courts I laughed at the fact of calling them art punk. I love them but pushing fancy genre labels is idiotic Sorry If i offended you :^)
Nathaniel Jenkins
post sister
Jeremiah Murphy
I'd say it's kind of a blend. Each sub genre having their fans, and staying in their own little niche. So none of them are really on a "rise". Personally I'm on the look out for throwbacks to traditional 80s hardcore. The Screaming Hardcore like the one you posted is too squeaky clean. Though I do like the surfy stuff, and that seems to be what's on the "rise" Pissed Jeans youtube.com/watch?v=w9z8Lgtx-ao False Punk youtube.com/watch?v=aMXPzrDg7kA
Lucas Jackson
Also a local band. I keep missing their shows. With the recording on for this being so shit it's hard to tell what's happening. teenageelectric.bandcamp.com/
Samuel Martin
it's basically indie, but at least it's good indie
Dominic Harris
Jank is dank, thank
Charles Adams
There's no title for this chart. What is it suppose to be of?
Benjamin Allen
listen and learn
Dylan Rodriguez
I've listened to some of this list prior to seeing it. I can olny guess that it's some kind of garage surf
Eli Anderson
With a splash of hawaiian folk and lapsteel guitar
Nolan Reyes
Parquet Courts are one of my favorite bands out right now. Saw em live and had a fucking blast when they played What Color Is Blood and Light Up Gold.
Yea I was kinda hoping for this answer, I was surprised to see them blow up so soon. I saw them both times they played here in Chicago and they sold out the one they headlined. Plus they're about to tour with FIDLAR and I get to see them for the 3rd time in like a year. >Parquet Courts are one of the worst bands I've ever heard in my life, and they're just ripping off what The Strokes did 15 years ago. Well someone's got to kek. Check out the Symposium from Chicago it'll make you reconsider parquet courts
I got recommended PUP a while ago and u was hooked, not so much on Modern Baseball. They're not bad it's just I'm not into Midwest Emo like the Front Bottoms I would love 80s Hardcore to rise but it's usually cookie cutter copies. Holy shit thank you, I've been looking everywhere for this chart Seeing them live was super fun, they went into some repetitive jam and I got to dance drunk with a drunk chick. Their music plays really well to crowds especially one of my favorites Back and White
Michael Jones
> no fake tides > no beach goons > the Orwells are in but not Modern Vices > no Vitto and the Trees > FIDLARs TOO They need to update This ASAP
Julian Green
I just gave wavves and fidlar a chance .... .. .. ....
I've concluded the kids that are attracted to "punk" right now take away a much different meaning than I do........
anything that doesn't sound fit neatly with those two? I want out of my pre 2000's punk bubble (there are some outliers but still)
Nathan James
y'all are p out of touch with actual DIY punk music if you think burgershit, mallrat pop punk, and p4k buzzbands are what's going on
Ryder Lee
there's a small handful of actual punks who post here then a bunch of kids who think alt rock shit like that is "punk"
check out NASA Space Universe, Q, and Liquids
Connor Fisher
explain
>NASA Space Universe listening now i like it thank you
> kids who think alt rock shit like that is "punk" makes me very :(((
Jackson Sullivan
you're calling mainstream indie rock garbage like fidlar punk
Adrian Bell
saying people who think that shite's punk makes me :(((
idgi why do people think that's punk
Dominic Baker
this is bait, right? fuck it
as a twenty-something music writer, Fidlar and Wavves don't write good shit. Wavves had a couple good releases, Fidlar's first album is fun, but no one in their right mind thinks they're making really high-quality music, lyrically/musically. It's fun and easy to listen to, that's it.
> Kuckle Punk and The Story So Far
Yeah I agree with you here
> Parquet Courts are one of the worst bands I've ever heard in my life, and they're just ripping off what The Strokes did 15 years ago.
I don't even understand where you're getting this. Have you listened to... either band? Plus, Parquet Courts is making music infinitely more interesting than The Strokes ever did (The Strokes being the band who stole everything they did, image and music). Parquet Courts do have some obvious influences, but the fucking Strokes? lmfao
> Knocked Loose and Counterparts gaining traction and getting booked for festivals
if you're right here, that's unfortunate, but yeah, I've noticed that too
Jeremiah Ramirez
this guy gets it
Charles Long
>asks if this is bait >agrees with majority of his claims how are you a music writer again?
Christian Wright
> majority > less than half
ok
Let me break it down for you:
Fidlar popular w/twenty-something music writers: disagree
Wavves "": disagree
Knuckle Punk being shit: agree
Story so Far "": agree
Parquet Courts ripping Strokes: disagree
Knocked Loose and Counterparts gaining traction: agree
Knocked Loose and Counterparts (bands like them) being the future: no stated opinion, other than it's unfortunate IF he's correct about that.
I mainly just asked if it was bait because of the statement about Parquet Courts and Strokes because I don't understand how anyone who has actually listened to both bands could actually believe that, unless they have some disease where all music sounds drastically different than the way it sounds to the rest of us.
Carson Butler
also, Knocked Loose and Counterparts gaining traction shouldn't count, because that's a goddamn fact if you've paid attention. Still, I very clearly disagree with that poster on a lot of shit, but I'm not gonna say he's an idiot when he's obviously right about something.
Wyatt Ward
Any good lady punk stuff come out recently?
Jace Smith
>surfs up one of the least surfy beach boys albums
Henry Walker
>if you're right here, that's unfortunate pussy
Nolan Butler
he really doesn't
none of you go to shows or know what's actually happening in punk musuc if you think Parquet motherfucking Courts is punk
Nathan Nguyen
Dame Guerilla Toss
Dylan White
First link there. I don't know maybe you'd like Slutever and Dilly Dally? They're kinda more grunge revival but they're aight.
Btw not shilling but I'd recommend anyone that doesn't know about Gimme Tinnitus to check it out. It's a music website, they do podcasts every once in a while, play a lot of different stuff. Always some good new punk that you might not have heard of
Jackson Phillips
i was gonna say the frights, but i thought that was just bc i live in socal in a beach community. but really, with how popular beach goth is getting, the wide success of fidlar and the growlers, the growth of the frights, surf punk is the most up and coming punk subgenre or really alternative genre currently
Christopher Perry
thats really good to hear especially since im stating a surf punk project for fun.
Nolan Russell
where do either of us argue that parquet courts are punk? and what the fuck is the point of just saying "I bet you guys don't even go to shows like I do"? I can tell you you're wrong, but I know you're not going to believe me anyways. but keep on thinking you're a special snowflake for hating on a popular band. you must be a sad dude.
Connor Perez
Thanks for the recs!
Ayden Hughes
there's the punk i know, quibbling over labels and rehashing no true scotsman ad infinitum
Nathan Hernandez
it's not a matter of some "no trye Scotsman" shit, the music you idiots are posting is literally just not punk and the fact that you think this shit is indicative of modern punk makes it clear that you are not punks and are not actually active in a punk/DIY scene
Lucas King
punk is just a genre label. if it's the most adequate descriptor, even with the addition of qualifier like pop, surf, garage, then the music falls under that umbrella whether or not the bands, labels, fans etc live a "punk" lifestyle
Connor Hernandez
>dick dale I wonder what it could be
Josiah Wright
This is how retarded shit like afropunk came alive dumabsses like yourself are to blame
Jason Wilson
>afropunk not even a punk festival seems like you're the one who doesn't know anything about what you're talking about, and just get butthurt because you've made this one word the sole direction of your life. pretty pathetic.
Mason Gomez
I'm not talking about a lifestyle you stupid jackass
the music is literally just not punk, for the 15th fucking time
Wyatt Hill
Thx Mr.psychoanalysis You're still a dumbass FYI
Dylan Young
I'm not the same person you're sperging at man, just saying that you seem to have too much stake in what is and isn't punk
Camden Thompson
i bet you use poseur non-ironically
Ryan Evans
>implying it's one user telling everybody itt they are retarded
I am not the same as afropunk guy
>it's not y, it's x >haha loser why are you so mad about y >it's not y it's x >haha dude you're totally wrong about y
you are illiterate.
Brayden Jones
>Indie rock thxs for proving my point dumbass why not just add pop punk to this thread also better yet lets
whats ur fav pop punk album friend the wonder years I bet
Robert Carter
But you can clearly hear punk influences from these bands Iggy and the stooges - garage rock Television- indie """art""" punk The Cramps- surf punk The Ramones- pop punk then greens day to modern pop punk
Kevin Flores
are you sure it is not in fact you who lacks a modicum of literacy? all subgenres by definition also belong to the primary genre you purist nimrod
Grayson Rodriguez
It's not often you can read the fedora in a comment.
Jack Bennett
Parquet Courts sounds like a shitty English Beat.
Jeremiah Johnson
>I'll pick and choose what details to pay attention to You're a retard.
Isaiah Russell
>what a witty rejoinder i can use today...ah, yes le fresh fedora, how exceedingly droll
Mason Jenkins
Relevant pic. New Orleans powerhouses.
The link provided is their old project. I grew up with Brian, the guitar player. I've known him for upwards of 15 years now.
