I think cycling is more popular that most people suggest. But most fans are outside cycling.

Well atleast here cycling is on rise.

You can sit down and watch the whole events of these things live... If you want to watch the whole race, TV is the best way to do it with cycling...
Also, people attach value to things which they pay for (see the rise of the mamil with the rise of expensive carbon etc.) and people can get excited about getting tickets for other sports... they get a kick out of the exclusiveness of limited tickets creating more of a buzz

I think cycling has the right amount of audience. Big enough to organize grand tours and not too big to become cancer like the most followed sports.

Cycling, like other types of sport of this type of muscular effort is not very dependent on how long ago you started. It's all natural talent. It's sport where the creative part is almost non existent.
The only thing you can actually improve that's depended on how long you're at the sport are things like positioning in the bunch, descending, handling etc. Things that are pretty easy to be competent at.
For example, a very good rower will always be a very good cyclist. There are quite a few of these examples.

For example, look at the story of Joaquim Agostinho, that started pro cycling at 25 after years where he just used his bike every day just to go to work (that's how they found him, the professional team training near where he lived could not keep up with him and his 20kg steel bike), he went to win his first Volta 2 years latter.

I tend to disagree with you there. Eddy Boss had a high vo2max in his youth, higher than Greg lemond, yet he has turned out to be a flop. Genetics are important, but training and nutrition pay a larger role than you assume. Also, good 'ol Edgar can turn any old rider from Barloworld into a 2 time Tour winner.

It could be a lot worse though. This is unique to cycling.

For example, the ability to recover from a big effort is almost as important.
Of course that without training you'll get nowhere, but all I'm saying is that some people will never ever get anywhere no matter how much they train compared to some with 2 months training.

I guess they have a disadvantage due to the climate (6+ months Winter for cycling), also they're tall while cyclists are usually smaller.

Too bad football is most popular here followed with basketball or skijumping.
