Charles Guard - Avenging and Bright (1980) >manx folk music
Very pretty and delicate harp music. To parrot the only RYM review this album has, a light breeze could knock this album over, it's so put together and delicate, every note has a purpose, and that purpose is making the most damn serene music on the planet. It crosses the bridge into overly pastoral territory occasionally, mainly when the woodwinds kick in. It doesn't do this very often, but when it does it almost becomes the musical equivalent of a Thomas Kinkade painting. Still, heart-shatteringly pretty music, and some of the harp compostions are impressively dense.

MIMEO & John Tilbury - The Hands of Caravaggio (2002) >EAI
I'm not entirely sure if this is objectively too sparse or just too sparse for my tastes, but whatever the case is I'm not entirely on board with this. The dynamics here are a bit off, it's either very soft and sparse or every instrument is playing at the same exact time, there's really no in between. Sometimes the louder, busier sections are appropriately shocking, but they're often ill-fitting and timed poorly. Some of the sounds here are also slightly irritating, like an electronic fly buzzing around in my headphones. Despite all this, the group (it's funny to me that MIMEO is basically an EAI supergroup, and that Tilbury for some reason didn't want to be a part of the actual group) does have a wonderful control of sound, they can coax pretty much any sound out of any instrument, and they do manage to keep things at least decently fresh throughout the album's runtime. It does get tedious a /lot/ however, and it's just really not my thing.

>Corea - Los Peores 7 Km De Mi Vida Still unsure how capitalization in titles works in Spanish
Post rock/hardcore where crescendos are usually screamo (not sure why screamo is the main genre on rym, it hardly makes up a fifth of the album). Speaking of which, I usually can’t stand screamo, but the vocals are bearable here in their all their maximalist distorted rage, and the underlying instrumental work during these passages is really nice. The anguished howls really add to the album most of the time when they hit, like the rabid pack of dogs that attacks the end of “Eterno en la garganta del tormento.”
Most of the rest of the album is either midwestern-tinged (read: occasionally twangy) post-hardcore, or epic post rock. A few times, like on “Cuando el mar pierde las conchas,” the music is reduced to artsy sorts of sound collages and tape experiments, and occasionally just straight noise. That song especially has a particularly potent moment where distraught voices hauntingly float through the ether of tape manipulation.
Dull moments are few and far between, cool or epic moments are plentiful. >8/10
Yeah that's what came up first. Pretty funny honestly
Christian Sanchez
>let's get it on wew groovy as fuck and "just to keep you satisfied" is a tear jerker
>the human beinz - evolutions your typical 60s psych but tasteful for the most part, these guys can play. thankfully once it started to get stale, it surprised me with a worthwhile jam at the end

hopefully the tapes for this local band's album I'm reissuing will come in time. I sent an email to my supplier today about making sure they arrive before the 8th

I think the trick to good back-n-forth banter is giving 'em enough rope. And I could've sworn I gave the guy in the last thread enough rope.
Oh well
Let's Get It On is fantastic, just listened to it again in full a few nights ago. I'm interested in what you have to say about Real Estate btw Believe in the heart of the cards

>2Pac - Strictly 4 my N.I.G.G.A.Z...
Tupac was my age (22) when he released this, which is pretty crazy to think about. It’s been ages since I’ve listened to Pac but reading a couple articles on the 20th anniversary of his death, I figured today was a perfect time to revisit his material.
This album seems to be more of a old school west coast style than his next two projects, with most of the beats featuring a dense, claustrophobic feel, a la Public Enemy. As a result, I don’t think I enjoyed this as much. There’s some great lyrics on here, classic Pac storytelling but it doesn’t feel as powerful as his other releases. I don’t think he’s completely perfected his style yet but you can tell that he’s kind of getting there. He still carries a couple of these songs with pure emotion, which is what I think most people find so fascinating about his music. Cuts like “Point The Finga”, “Last Wordz” and (obviously) “I Get Around”/”Keep Ya Head Up” are just terrific. The latter two tracks also hint toward the more accessible style he’d go for on his next two projects. Considering this is not my typical style, I was very entertained. I think most hip-hop fans should be able to find something entertaining on here, or at least appreciate his abilities.
Where to next guys?
Brandon Johnson
>also, I'm pissed that not a single record store within like a hundred miles from me is doing cassette store day. move to a better place, loser B^)
Oliver Lee
alright that's it I'm boarding a plane to NYC right now, there are like two stores doing it there

Dominic Garcia
>100K in debt from cassettes shits cheap as fuck comparatively.
thats a lot of cassettes
How about Diamond Dogs?
Noah Reed
I meant more standard NYC living debt but I could see myself blowing obscene amounts of money on tapes and records honestly
Ethan Nelson
Definitely checking that out next. Thanks for the rec man
Hey guys, it's the n00b again. Made a chart to put my taste out there so people know what I like to start with. It's not really a complete picture, but more a summary of the albums that are most important to me. Might start a convo or two, who knows. :^)
Also, it's been a pretty rough day and I'm having some lonely time right now. If anyone wants to send me some very relaxing minimal jazz type stuff (or even ambient) to listen to it would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I'll be trying to sift through the rec's from yesterday I didn't get to.
Cameron Brooks
Yeah np, I was sure you'd like it because you liked Red House Painters and Songs: Ohia tho, strange...
Mason Edwards
n00bs are welcome. Never listened before--it's well overdue--but Soundgarden seems like the odd man out there. Would rec, I guess?
Kinda strange and mixed chart. Did you listen to Houdini?
I can't really come up with a rec because of the mixed genres and stuff, but since you liked The Doctor Came At Dawn I'd say
>Songs: Ohia - Didn't It Rain (yup, I liked it that much) >Matt Elliot - Drinking Songs
Nolan Jones
Superunknown is definitely a rec. I'd say I have a good 20-30 albums I can come up with that are 10/10's for me, and that's one of them. I think it's the high water mark for that style of songwriting, and I'm a huge fan of Chris Cornell's vocal delivery. Give it a shot.
Also, I very much dig the track you sent me. The blues influence a la Mingus is obvious and welcome (I grew up on that shit). Many thanks!
In the meantime, here's one of my faves from Superunknown.
I got stuck in the elevator for 10 minutes this morning! Got freed just as I finished my tea. Interesting experience.
Listening to MIA new album now
Gabriel Harris
lol, honestly it's because I am strange and mixed. I did listen to Houdini. I love it but it's near the bottom for me in terms of their discog. Huge Melvins fangirl.
And I'm listening to Songs: Ohia now. It's pretty perfect for my mood atm.
Gabriel Sanders
>Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane - Thelonious Plays with Coltrane would be surprised if you haven't listened to this one >Dave Holland - Confference of the Birds >Shitmat - One Step in Da Rave >Kid 606 - Kill Sound Before Sound Kills You >Bang on A Can - Vol 1 >Die Like a Dog - Aoyama Crows >Cukor Bila Smert - Manirna Muzyka >Tenhi - Maaäet >Joan La Barbara (Morton Feldman) - Three Voices >Tangerine Dream - Zeit >Destroy All Monsters - 74 76
Ian Williams
This new MIA album sucks ass, wtf!
Elijah Turner
One of the lamer things that's ever happened to me was I got stuck in the same elevator twice for an hour each time and the second time I was extra pissed about missing a class and being edgy so during the obligatory group selfie I flipped the bird and it made it onto facebook and my grandma commented and told me that was rude woah no way thats crazy who'd've thought wild oh my
Juan Gutierrez
Matangi was amazing though
Jacob Baker
>getting stuck in the elevator Easily one of my worst nightmares. Hope that didn't shake you up too bad. Yeah I have, Coltrane is a fave too. Haven't heard anything else in that list aside from Holland and Shitmat, so I'm skimming through now. Tangerine Dream is going nicely.
Colton Garcia
Glad you're liking it! If you wanna dig more into that kind of music be sure to check Magnolia Electric Co. also, it's an album by them but under a different name and it's a little bit heavier, you might like it.
Who's your favourite jizz artist btw?
Jason Rodriguez
Nah, I was just bored
Parker Mitchell
Hello all! Sorry I have not been on much, I have been very very busy.
I am looking for the following and I am wondering if you will all help me.
Depressive albums that are also lush dealing with love.

I think an all time favorite would be way too hard to pin down, but Monk, Davis and Coltrane are up there. I dig really avante stuff too, so Anthony Braxton is worth mentioning. Avishai Cohen is definitely my fave modern jizzer.

New to this thread. What does everyone think of my top albums list? Any shit to talk? Any recommendations?

Pretty great IMO, I just posted my own a short while ago: I love almost all of that. What make Niggas on the Moon your favorite DG album (if it is)?
Basically they sum up my feelings. But I will be sure to check it out
Ryan Roberts
also, >Who's your favorite jizz artist btw? I forgot to ask you the same.
Jason Peterson
I'm still digging into jazz so I still have a pretty basic knowlege, but I like Mingus, Komeda, Brötzmann. I tend to prefer the avangarde side of the genre.
Jordan Morgan
>Brotzmann I don't know about you, but this is my favorite concert from him, largely because of Han Bennink's involvement on drums (he is a fucking animal). youtube.com/watch?v=G1T-Pxkp6SY

Alright I've reached my limit for the day. It's been a long one as it is. Going to bed. Night ya'll.

well you can listen to them any time. If you want replace those 3 with >Picture Palace Music - Curriculum Vitae I >4g - Cloud >Ichiko Aoba - 0% >Pascal Comelade - Slow Music this one is kind of Melancholic more than sad but it fits the mood you in IMO i would also rev up Cohen, RHP, Feels, etc since most are good feels music
for fans of Richard Youngs and weird droney shit in general: nofansrecords.bandcamp.com/album/dreichmass it's a 1997 archival recording, utilizing "Bagpipe chanter, electric guitar, homemade synthesizer, tape loops, voice." awesome album glad ya liked it

today some dude came into the record store i work at and bought 7 very brutal-looking metal albums and a copy of some lana del rey record. He placed it in the middle and broke eye contact with me as if i were to challenge his cred.
I'm gonna try this out. Honestly haven't been into music in a while. Used to love listening and discovering new stuff, but for nearly a year I've just been in a lull. Can't tell if I'm not listening to music because I'm depressed or the other way around.
I'll start with this chart and see how it goes. They're all albums I haven't listened to. Mostly just genre essentials I never got around to, plus a token 2010s album.
Not much variety, but if you got some recs, i'll add them.
And yes, I've never listened to marquee moon. I know.
Easton Ward
Never noticed this before but I guess this is where Jim O'Rourke's album names come from? Can anyone confirm he's a Nicolas Roel fan or has he talked about the naming elsewhere?

Nicolas Roeg*

Noah Wood
>tfw Tuco already stopped listening to metal
Sebastian Reed
Finally listened to this album after seeing the video for Meadow Hopping, Traffic Stopping, Death Splash and reading about it on here. I wish I'd listened to it sooner. Anyone have more recs for catchy pop albums with amazing songwriting?
Luis Davis
Most of the DG albums are current favorites of mine; Money Store and No Love are both amazing albums, and I was really happy with Bottomless Pit. There's just something new and exciting about every album, and Niggas on the Moonjust speaks to me the most, personally. Maybe it's the spastic instrumentation laced with bjork samples, maybe it's the really in your face snappy production, maybe it's Ride's abstract, borderlining sometimes silly vocals and strange word play titles. >Black Quarterback >How do I take that title seriously >It's a DG song that's how Jenny Death is amazing too.
Thanks for the recs, anons. Also appreciating the flcl .gif; the soundtrack is another one of my favorites. Also >The number 12 looks like you >Mah nigga Didn't know there was more than me and one other person who liked them. Haven't checked them out in a while though.

seems I'm the only one who thinks that album's great.
Grayson Mitchell
next one's even better
tones down the loud-ass drum machine and the rawness (aka shittiness but when you call it that its not okay and when you call it raw it is fsr i mean theyre pretty much the same thing well maybe not exactly but on most days) for generic pop and midwest emo melodies that feel greater than that however, maybe just because of the not-that-generic context, maybe because they're generic because they're mathematically beautiful idfk. idk the more i try weigh and to think about this band in music reviewer terms the worse they seem so no, something's wrong with this whole thing we're doing to music I T T
fuck it, 'tis a 9.5/10 right this second

>Merzbow –Material Action for 2 Microphones (1981)
"Hoochie Coochie Scratched Man" is a great jam with samples of blues songs and extreme noise. A lot of distortion meets with electronics and feedback; there is also a lot of "material action", which is a term for using household objects to make quiet sounds, which are then amplified, and goddamn do they sound really good; there are also a lot of very harsh, abrasive noise outbursts. The most interesting thing on this song is by far the use of samples: at some point during the second half we hear an old French song, that is modified until it sounds really weird and creepy, giving me the chills; around the 17 minute mark some stringed instruments pop up in the chaos, and it also sounds amazing. Very good track, with great variety and dynamics.
“Yumin, Non Stop Disco” starts with a couple of extremely distorted synthpop tunes. The fuzzy songs sound fantastic, and now I want to listen to a noise/new wave album. The rest of the track is usual tone manipulation and acoustic audio sources modified, much like the first track, only a lot more calmed down. To be fair, it is pretty varied and fascinating from a sonic point of view, but I simply didn’t find it that much interesting.
“New Acoustic Music No. 7” begins with a sample of a rock song, obviously very distorted. The rest of the track is basically some field recordings of Masami doing some stuff, but it sounds surprisingly good: the noise here is very minimal, sparse and quiet. I really dig the contrast between spacious sounds and not-too-loud distortion, because it creates a very unusual aesthetic and atmosphere. Near the end more samples are introduced, and we also have an unplugged electric guitar improvisation, that is really good.
The first track is the best, because of its complex nature and sound, and I really dig the sonic experiment of “New Acoustic Music”, so overall this was a very entertaining experience.
7/10
