You see Greeks are a near eastern people. If you take a look at their history, they were always much more involved in the near east than Europe.
Southern Italy had great contact and was colonized by Greeks. Northern Italy however was not. This is why genetic studies reveal that Southern Italians are more related to Greeks than Northern Italians.
Therefore Rome stood in the line that separated Europeans and Near Easterners.
Romans were Europeans, related to the peoples of France and Iberia.
Greeks are near easterners, related to the peoples of the Levant and Anatolia.
