can anyone explain why metal is a thing? I'm really trying to be open minded about this kind of music, but most of the celebrated 'classics' just sound like complete noise to me.
Like... i've listened to several songs by dying fetus, and its horrible. There is no up and down whatsoever, just kickdrum spamming and screaming, can't even hear guitars or bass...

Cause in between the drums and the vocals, there's those things called electric guitars.

I think what that other user said, to start with Altars of Madness, is a solid idea. It's pretty much as metal as an album gets, and is halfway between the old metal (70-80s) and modern styles.
This album too is pretty much as accessible as it gets while still remaining entirely metal. Also a cross between classic metal songwriting and relatively newer aesthetic.

Don't get me wrong, I can take distortion and dissonance, I can take screaming and lack of harmonies, but it just made me wonder how anyone could actually enjoy this, thats why I was asking. Guys please help me try to find this great cascadian black metal band/project (maybe) that had this wonderfully unique and refreshing mix of good atmo-cascadian black with some prominent yet not overwhelming shoegaze influence. There is no question this artist is black metal, they are not at all like deafheaven or alcest where the line seems blurred. I also believe that this artist was one of the very first to incorporate shoegaze influences into black metal at all but they're very very obscure and I am not kidding.
I found out about the band in the summer of 2013 on the black metal subreddit and oh man their music resonated A LOT with me. I am 500% sure I scrobbled them on lastfm but I've got a no idea how to do any type of search through my library or play history that isn't manual. I have 700+ pages of play history over 4 and a half years so manual search isn't an option for my adhd self.
Okay but the key component to this is THAT ONE OF THEIR ALBUM COVERS LOOKS A LOT LIKE THE COVER OF SUNN O)))+BORIS' GREAT COLLAB ALTER BUT A LOT MORE GREEN AND KINDA LIVELY LOOKING I guess.
This is probably total folly, especially with such little details but I've got no clue now what their name is/was. It actually may have been a one man or maybe even one woman project but I've got no clue.
Pic related is the aforementioned similar cover art to one of this mystery band's most well known albums but said mystery band's cover is green tinted in simplistic terms.
