So, Skepta just won the mercury prize and beat Bowie and Radiohead. What does Sup Forums think
Mercury Prize
>Mercury Prize
The what?
nah, that's not me
Radiohead weren't going to win it anyway.
Bowie should have won it. It was a cop out to say he'd have thought differently
most relevant artist won it, makes sense
expected david bowie to win it
i have over 11k albums and i have no idea who this guy is
>i have no idea who this guy is
this desu, never head of it/them whoever the fuck
>Grime
there's the problem
this is for the culture! UK grime niggas needed more exposure!
theguardian.com
Konnichiwa is my top 10 AOTY, thats pure flames.
SHUTDOWN
>he watches award shows about music
>he thinks any of those artists deserves acclaim
yawn
let me know when you grow up
Last year was Benjamin Clementine a not too famous artist, too, thats what makes it more beautiful! theguardian.com
>album got to 2 in the charts
>not famous
Bowie should've won. That and A Moon Shaped Pool are the only two I could see still being talked about in 10 years time
It's all just douche pop though.
I've literally never heard of that
You're so beige
this stupid grime meme will die down again like it did the last time.
What does that even mean?
well ur either american or living under a rock - in case you didnt realise mercury prize is a british music award
IT AINT SAFE ON THE BLOCK
NOT EVEN FOR THE COPS
novelist, d double, aj tracey, flowdan, riko dan, trim >>>>>>>>>>>>> skepta
bowies album was the best one there but theres literally no point in giving an award to a dead person
>in case you didnt realise mercury prize is a british music award
Is it sponsored by a car company?
well if its british then who gives a fuck?
The real question is will Grime ever be as good as Hip-Hop? Most songs have one flow, rhymes with same couplets, most grime tracks sound the same beat wise, no interesting subject matter
I've got a proper nark on about this because I was expecting Bowie to win then I could make a post saying "The reason Radiohead didn't win? Blame it on the Blackstar" but now I can't.
DUDE GETTING SHANKED OUTSIDE THE PUB LMAO
>affirmative action picks
>2 years in a row
mercury a shit desu
mercury music prize is a genuine meme
klaxons won it one year for fuck's sake
black people dont go to pubs
ooooooooooweeoooweeooo
noooo
>>affirmative action picks
lol getting butthurt cos whitey didnt win
skepta was the justified winner, there is no denying that, none of the other albums have had even a tenth of the impact
white music is dead
deal with it
Shouldn't you be celebrating your win now m8
>Bowie's death album
>Radiohead's first in 5 years
>less than a tenth of the impact of some nobody fucking grime artist
weak bait kid
>none of the other albums have had even a tenth of the impact
In sales and marketing?
What are you using to measure impact? I can guarantee you that Blackstar outdoes it in any form of measurement
Ability for the artist to replicate the album in a live setting.
Can Bowie do that?
radiohead was literally b sides, bowie they probably felt like was a wasted pick
Good - he deserved it most in my opinion.
Shit, you got me
lol did u think mercury prize was some high-brow art competition?
>why would the music establishment reward someone who is CURRENTLY relevant rather than bands who were relevant 10-40 years ago?
sorry but no one in the real world cares about blackstar that much
No-one over 18 or outside of London cares about Grime that much
wrong lol
I'm 24, out of London, and care about Grime because it's a genre I can get ideas from as a producer - your point is?
have u been to a party in the last year haha
talking out of your ass again?
lmao
What are you talking about? There are Grime threads on this website every day
pretty jokes desu lmao
lol pleb
but im london
cringe
It's liek Ronnie Size Reprsants all over
still, you get a check, well done, don't waste it on cds
I feel like Grime doesn't allow for as many creative freedoms as hip hop. You're sorta bound to late 00's dubstep instrumentals (think old Rusko / Caspa)
>lol did u think mercury prize was some high-brow art competition?
But music is art. Why wouldn't it?
Polly and olly on suicide watch
activman on the come up
So glad he won.
Fuck Gayvid Memewie
wow this is so wrong
how so?
bowie was too obvious, radiohead the same and it would have been weird for amsp to be the album they won it for
haven't heard skepta's album and don't intend to but he's obviously the most culturally relevant artist in 2016 of those nominated. I don't know if that should count for anything
To be honest with you the most culturally relevant one was probably The 1975, which definitely shouldn't have won. Grime has been the "next big thing" for years but ask the man on the street who Skepta is and they wouldn't have a clue. Anyway it's not supposed to be about cultural relevancy but about artistic achievement.
Are there links for the full concert? BBC is cockblocking the VPN's with new TV License rules?
Yeah he obviously deserves its. Bix nood in a british accent with fruit loops preset beats is really the peak of 2016 and any other year for that mater.
>Grime has been the "next big thing" for years but ask the man on the street who Skepta is and they wouldn't have a clue
dont think the 1975 are considerably better known than skepta
also how is synthpop-revival-revival relevant?
wow a racist doesn't appreciate or acknowledge the cultural significance of black music
extraordinary!
>wow a racist doesn't appreciate or acknowledge the cultural significance of black music
Ye. People go to college, blacks go in jail.
I'm honestly shocked about how ANOHNI was snubbed from the shortlist. Do Brits really hate her for being technically American? The album has the most relevant/trendy production in the long list
It's the judge's choices on that, except the 1975, who only really got there because they have such a rabid teen-girl fanbase.
>complete non-sequiteur meme answer
epic
>ask the man on the street who Skepta is and they wouldn't have a clue
the man on the street probably wouldn't know anyone other than bowie and maybe radiohead, and even then it's just because of decades of passively hearing them
ask any 18-30 year old on the street (i.e. the prime audience for actively keeping up with current music) and they know skepta
skepta seems to have a wider reach as well. 1975 have a specific audience (teenage girls)
I heard on the BBC Radio 6, that one of the shortlisted albums was fan-voted. I think it was The 1975
dude that anohni album sucked
it was full of hudomo leftover hip hop beats that antony didn't mix well with
should have been arca+antony
sorry but her singing about obama isn't good enough oscar bait
Well, Anohni has already won once before, if I recall correctly, so maybe that played into the decision? Still, I was rooting for Hopelessness. I know it's not really liked on Sup Forums but it's a beautiful album.
Affirmative Action strikes again
I mean both were pretty good so I don't see a problem
>Her
But you had no question in the first place. Blacks """music""" is shitty repetitive loops with lyrics that literal don't make sense most of the time and the time they do its almost satirical how simple they are. And yeah I'm sure telling young people to do crimes and drugs is sure a award deserving and truly inspiring. Black """music""" is literally affirmative actions.
This. They are not even trying to be subtle anymore.
Arca + Anohni would have seemed way too derivative of Vulnicura, imo.
nah arca goes well with whoever he works with
that song he did with dean blunt was good
I just don't think anohni got to shine well with hudmo + opn
the emotion i was supposed to feel never came. felt sadder listening to old burial tunes lol
>Blacks """music""" is shitty repetitive loops
interesting interpretation of blues, jazz, rocknroll, soul, funk, disco, techno, hip-hop
>lyrics that literal don't make sense most of the time
>im too stupid to understand something therefore it doesn't make sense
>its almost satirical
lol u cant even speak english
>I'm sure telling young people to do crimes and drugs is sure a award deserving and truly inspiring
where exactly has skepta done this?
It's not even that good of a grime album mate.
His brother put out a better album last year but noone outside of preexisting grime fans really gave a shit. Konichiwa is decent, but does absolutely nothing new and is far too Americanized to be an example of this supposed UK invasion across the worldwide music industry.
lol never said i thought it was a great album
this m8s
jme>skepta
but mans too busy playing video games with KSI lol
OPN tracks are >>>>, but still, the overall album is great lirycally and very coehesive. I lived the vocal production, it's werid, but I dig it.
IA about Arca though, Sin Rumbo is one of my fav songs of the year, I hope they will bond over the gender fluidity and her second LP would be with him, since they both are bff's with Bjork.
I knew she wouldn't be a winner, but still was shocked she wasn't a finalist. PJ Harvey won twice actually.
Exacty
Arca has way more tricks up his sleeve
You obviously think it's better and more impactful than any of the other nominations.
dunno why u'd assume the album i personally like the most and the album i think has had the most impact and deserves to win the prize would be the same
i dunno, odd vocals + arca production just seems a little like an uninspired choice at this point, even if it the outcome is usually successful.
with hopelessness i almost feel like it's supposed to be a little humorous - you've got these lyrics describing some really depressing ("blow my head off") and corrupt shit laid over these really poppy and slick beats that verge on sounding overly manufactured; which in turn sort of reflect the commentary on mass commercialization and capitalism etc. the juxtaposition is intriguing.
honestly think elysia cramptons albums do that much better
who the fuck is bonny bear
here's your (You) retard
Two different things. Anohni is trying to bludgeon the point home with how straight-forward and blunt the lyrics are, making the listener uncomfortable in the process, while Crampton aims for something much more abstruse that's not as overly concerned with semiosis.
yes, teenage girls are known for their rabid support in fan vote type scenarios
it's not affirmative action
there are a lot of wiggers in the 18-24 range that listen to this music. skepta is extremely popular and mostly because dumb white people listen to his music
Is the album actually good? I've eard few singles here and there and the only way I can describe it is "cute". It's like male-driven EMOTION, but definetelly not as fun/interesting. Polaris Prize will me way more interesting this year
I liked some songs and it has some straight cheesey ambient tracks
was a 6/10 for me
it's harmless fun based on the songs i've heard, but not good enough to make me want to listen to the whole album even once
Skepta's flow is so ripped off of Project Pat on that song, it drives me crazy.
not even a huge hip hop fan but I listened to a ton of Three 6 Mafia in high school so it stands out like a sore thumb
