Learning a neighboring countries language when yours does a lot of business with them is better than learning Spanish unless you're a Jamon buyer for boutique stores.

I wish I studied German instead of that useless language that is French

funny, I wish I studied Russian instead of fucking Italian

A few days ago I read an article about the future of languages.

It seems that French will continue to be a powerful language because there are still many people studying it and because of Africa. German, however, will be a totally irrelevant language.

Do you even need to study French to understand them? I especially mean written French. For us German is an ayylmao language, in fact our word for "German" also means "mute".

Of course, but only if those African nations won't go full "we wuz Bantu" etc.

A lot of former French-African countries like Rwanda are converting to English since it's more useful and there's a lot of anti-French sentiment thanks to poor colonial management.

You have to differentiate the natives with the immigrants from other parts of Spain that live in Catalonia. Even though some people who's native language is Castilian can probably can communicate in Catalan, they have learned it in the school and it's not the same that when catalan is spoken in your house, with your friends, by majority of your town...

My observation is that xarnegos are more easy to understand when hey speak Catalan because they speak the language in "castilianized" way.

In a lot of urban areas Castilian is widely spoken, even is the majority language, but in rural areas is a very different story, Catalan is very dominant. I don't know the exact numbers tho

spanish is the retarded version of italian, being stupid i understand it

porque no quiero vivir en alemania

so castilian speakers who emigrate to catalonia pick up catalan?

No, their children learn the language but an adult is not going to learn the language when everybody speaks Spanish in Catalonia

>everybody speaks Spanish in Catalonia
good

Usually not.

Yes, almost everyone knows Castilian. the ones that have problem speaking Castilian are elderly people in rural areas. I meet a guy once that didn't knew how to speak it and he was young: this is extremely rare. But he could understand it completely, he just couldn't speak it so he responded in Catalan so no problem.

I also know of a guy that lives in a very rural zone in Guipúzcoa (Basque Country) who's family has problems with Castilian too, but this is because in the past formal education was no so common and their contact with Castilian was almost non existent. No happens anymore because everyone has to learn Castilian in school.

ay caramba

Do all basques speak Castilian too?

Nowadays yes, but I'm sure you can find people in some parts of Vizcaya, Guipúzcoa and northern Navarre in their 80's that are no so fluent and they don't understand it very well.

And viceversa, there are people that speak Basque in places where it has never been spoken. It has been artificially revived

I would say you what this Basque told me: batua is a joke and a perversion. This guy is obviously native and has not learned batua Basque in school.

I mean, of course he has learned batua in school because is mandatory, but "true Basque" is spoken in his house and village. I hope you understand what I meant.

I don't actually speak Spanish nor Castilian, only Chilean Creole.

way better than andalusians

I never studied it seriously but I can understand it a bit, so maybe A2? B1?

I'm C1 (Brit) but I still struggle to understand anything with a thick accent or where multiple people are talking.

You can find young people (20´s or 30´s) who has Basque as first language and thus feels uncomfortable when speaking Spanish, but I seriously doubt that you could find any Basque monolingual.
