I want to fucking understand how can anyone be religious in this day and age? How much concentrated stupidity one must have?

Because fuck you you fucking hedonic pagan infidel

I'm an atheist but I can understand why people do this. Life is pretty scary, it'd be nice to believe it's all taken care of by a heavenly parent, and people do some great stuff in the name of this god or that one.

As long as your religion (or lack thereof) doesn't make you a shittier person, and you can shut the fuck up about it, then I say bully for you and pic related!

>b-but it's the current year!!

mind your own business, fedora tipper

I'm an atheist, but I can understand some people beliefs in the possibility of deities, as long as they don't think a particular book holds the absolute truth of the universe.

Because it makes me feel better

>Heh,and don't try to insult m'lady Mary

because it's fun, unlike fedora tipping

well put

>I live in Albania

religion is an organization.
man gotta socialize, and its a pretty good way

>I don't

On average religious people are far more intelligent than non-religious ones. The only reason why people have this perception that most of the world's leading scientists are atheists, is because the atheistic scientists like Dawkins whore themselves out for fame.

It's thanks to this cultural myth from the "enlightenment" era that everyone in the pre-modern world was stupid and illiterate, while the moderns are well read and intellectually sound; when the opposite is actually closer to truth.

Quantum mechanics btfo of the theory of relativity also gives strong physical evidence for the existence of God.

they would be poor faithful if they didn't believe their book is the absolute truth.

>I want to fucking understand how can anyone be religious in this day and age? How much concentrated stupidity one must have?

>Quantum mechanics btfo of the theory of relativity
You clearly don't understand either of those things

It's a culture and a frame of reference. It can make life easier.
What I don't understand is how many can't seem to understand how diverse the experience of religiosity can be. Do you assume that every religious person just reads a book and follows what it says at face value?

All religions play "le picky choosey" with which doctrines they wish to follow.

The Catholic Church even has a name for it (tradition). And since they're the only true and legitimate church under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, they have the authority to pick and choose which teachings of Jesus to follow, and which external philosophies they wish to introduce into the faith.

>Quantum mechanics btfo of the theory of relativity also gives strong physical evidence for the existence of God.

I'm afraid I'm too stupid to understand how does this relate to my post

>le cherry picking maymay

All religions play "le picky choosey" with which doctrines they wish to follow.

According to your post, almost everyone on earth, except for the fringe religious fanatics, would fall under the category of "poor faithful"

Some people simply believe in the existence of a higher deity as the origin of everything, without giving to it any particular quality.

alright

It's not like believing in "market forces" is any better than believing in any other God.

>bully for you
Is this Roosevelt?

Because when the existential dread hits people would rather run than fight it.

Only fundamentalists of any faith claim to follow a literal interpretation of their book, and most of them don't even really do that.
The largest single, unified sect, the Catholic Church, claims its authority as an institution founded by Christ Himself, and not upon a belief that the Bible is the only authority on matters of faith.

>market forces don't exist

Market forces can be studied and measured, gods can't

It's nowhere near as simple as that desu, I always thought it was but now I believe in God and it's not as easy as
>lol I'll just go to heaven if I make myself believe in jebus or whoever

For me I started to get this feeling like everything had been predetermined to a degree, that everything in life was a test to make me a better person. It's slightly comforting but I still have to go through the difficult things, it doesn't make bad things go away.

I'm reading the Bible and it's not doing anything for me though desu, I believe in God but haven't worked out what sort of God or anything beyond that.

Phaggot who doesn't accept Christ and drink in/to his name.

Life is not scary, dear dipshit.

New testament only, dear britbong. The old testament is a testimony of hate, and came before JC, so it's useless as a guide.

I'm mostly reading the New Testament m8, Old is proper mythology but more interesting imo. The Gospels are thoroughly boring and I was very disappointed in how little there actually is about

Acts of the Apostles is interesting though.

I just don't feel a connection to Jesus though, God yes, Jesus no. I know they're one and the same in Christianity but it's not working to me.

...

As a child i couldn't take the bible seriously
I had a really scary dream one day though that convinced me I was wrong

Explain

Men forget in time of peace. What else is new? When shit goes down, even godless pig like you will start to look up. Then you will know why your father prayed

Yes, of course damn dreams prove religion is true. How could I forget?

>there are actually religious people in this board, this thread, right now
this baffles me, i've encountered like one or two religious people in my whole life.

>this baffles me

Clearly you're not as euphoric as you think then m8

>Quantum mechanics btfo of the theory of relativity also gives strong physical evidence for the existence of God.

i may or may not be intoxicated

>I've encountered like one or two religious people in my whole life.
You are living the dream

>Life is not scary, dear dipshit.

You will die and there's nothing you can do about it.

>there are actually religious people in this board, this thread, right now
>he fell for the meme

So basically, just because there are specialists who shed wisdom on it(and occationally telling us which offerings to give) it actually exists? That's exactly like religion.

>the """invisible hand""" speaks! oh joy for our apostle St. Adam Smith reveals the true path! We are all animated by a spirit that seeks to rationalize the world economy, it all makes sense now!

This cult should have been laughed out of serious economic theory a century ago

You never do something shitty in the name of your religion, because your prophets says it's good.

>I want to fucking understand how can anyone be religious in this day and age? How much concentrated stupidity one must have?

they're scared of death

I'm going to write a book about how Hirasawa Yui created the universe. Think people will believe it?

I wish I was religious, I think people who believe in god are far happier than me

Pfft, it was clearly Madoka.
Happy birthday Yui, though!

I pretty much saw the light at the end of the road with a silhouette of a figure standing there
There was an intense blue / white light coming from behind the silhouette
There was also an overwhelming white noise that grew louder and louder
Honestly I thought I was going to die
When I woke up I felt purified and it was like as if I had gotten a chance to fix everything that went wrong in my life
I also felt like I got help a few times later in life
Like I would get this feeling of gratitude and something very fortunate would happen in a given situation

I could never explain how I perceive the 'holy' aspect of the bible. I certainly make a very clear division: Old testament = Bad; New testament = Good. The connection I feel to JC is more like a deep respect to his memory and teachings.

Yes dear frog. And what is so wrong about that? I'll live my life laghing and half-drunk, do good by creation, study as much as I can and after death I'll get my ass to porgatory for a while before being allowed into heaven. Tyvm sir.
