We tend to forget how dangerous these kind of sports are, specially the bike ones. At least racing cars nowadays are fucking indestructible, but there is nothing they can do to make bikes safer.

the only way to be better off a crash is to lose kinetic energy.
thats why modern racing (and road) cars lose like all the parts even in relatively small crashes - they try to lose energy.
if you crash in a "tank" for example, the whole kinetic energy of your own body would destroy yourself - whats exactly what happens when you drop down a bike for example.
