Listen to this cover. Couple guys in a pizza place. Half the crowd not even paying attention. Amazing.

youtube.com/watch?v=MLrC7e3vSv8

That was a righteous fucking cover

youtube.com/watch?v=6dOwHzCHfgA

Because Vice City

Best mainstream band of the 80's

Best non-mainstream band of the 80's

They weren't mainstream, mainstream became them

The 80s was sorta like a post-industrial boom dystopia that verged on transitioning into some serious high tech shit... but stopped short of it somehow, somewhere. Well, technological developments slowed down, but obviously didnt stop completely.

Most of the TV shows on were still from the 70s as networks struggled to find popular shows that weren't sports or game shows and this was before cable TV made networks pull their heads out of their asses (or try to).

Bigger was always better in the 80s no matter what. Big hair. Big (bright) shirts. Big phones. The largest US cities smelled like piss and were cesspools of their own creation. Litter was everywhere to say the least.

serge
youtube.com/watch?v=FnKt84AdUHA

youtu.be/vuKjBqu1y_M

forgot to add a few things:
Japan was wrecking everybody's shit until their economy imploded.
Cars were boxy, small (left over from the "gas crisis" of the late 70's), and compensated for boxy fugliness with mechanically retractable headlights

Said like someone who a. didn't live through them b. doesn't remember living through them and is making shit up.

Terra Titanic by Peter schilling

>Big phones
Huh?

and I just realized I TLDR's the op's post and was supposed to post the synth pop/rock ballads that dominated the 80's

I lived through them. What makes you think I didn't?

useless mong

Truth.

youtu.be/QH2x5pARGdE

...

>Louie ck?

Intense cover though

>I lived through them. What makes you think I didn't?
Sounds more like a documentary intro than sharing an experience.

Nothing but hit and runs here, friend

They Might Be Giants
'nuff said

i didn't know zack had a successful drug business.

Yeah, but nobody but rich people or tv characters actually had them lol.

Just one man can fuck everything up

Truth!

I'm your only friend
I'm not your only friend
But I'm a little glowing friend
But really I'm not actually your friend
But I am

Give up on popular music and follow the trend

There was a lot of amazing punk rock.

Bob Mould's Solo album was the tits. I still listen to it today.

Don't forget this awesome gem.
youtube.com/watch?v=9O6e7cgkeqw

ergo The Dead Milkmen

genXfag here: I'll give you some rare gems.

Reflex: The Politics of Dancing
youtube.com/watch?v=eabefjsJsAQ

The Pursuit of Happiness: I'm An Adult Now
youtube.com/watch?v=pSDF8VvU13M
(Their entire album, _Love_Junk_, is way underrated - give it a listen. I was just listening to it again a few days ago - really good hard rock, sometimes with humorous lyrics, and a unique sound.)

Actually I'll just give you another one of theirs.
The Pursuit of Happiness: Hard To Laugh
youtube.com/watch?v=EVQ_er14oIA

The Alarm: Sold Me Down The River
youtube.com/watch?v=DdzbVsrpgBE

Pop Will Eat Itself: Can U Dig It?

Camper Van Beethoven: Eye of Fatima
youtube.com/watch?v=51PP8TwXrxE

The Cult: Sweet Soul Sister
youtube.com/watch?v=pqcAidqgqmU
(Another one where you should check out the whole album. The Cult were like the only metal band you were allowed to listen to if you were "alternative".)

youtu.be/D_Cus1Na8wc

youtube.com/watch?v=cJRP3LRcUFg

every 80's soundtrack

granted but deservedly so, no?

youtube.com/watch?v=hnpILIIo9ek

I am the son, and the heir, of a shyness that is criminally vulgar

Steve albini had some decent 80s stuff

The best

youtube.com/watch?v=oWeJ9p42ufg

Kinda, but by that point they had worked with Rick Rubin on Electric and on Sonic Temple they worked with Bob Rock so weren't really alternative anymore. Love and Dreamtime and the Southern Death Cult stuff really earned them their "alternative/goth" cred.

Love this song, hate that they used it as the theme song for Charmed.

Sinead O'Connor: Mandinka
youtube.com/watch?v=7liJyxyT1mo

Echo and the Bunnymen: Lips Like Sugar
youtube.com/watch?v=9hGcJA8fXvU

Sisters of Mercy: Lucretia, My Reflection
youtube.com/watch?v=IuezNswtRfo

Book of Love: Pretty Boys And Pretty Girls
youtube.com/watch?v=p8efAQ33fq0
(It's hard to fathom now but in the late 80s, people were afraid to have sex and get AIDS.)

Orchestral Maneuvers In The Dark: Genetic Engineering
youtube.com/watch?v=OddgsPyCJmU
(Fun fact: In his youth, Elliot Rodger was friends with one of the members of OMD's daughter - Maddie Humphreys.)

You get life. well done sir

God I loved her back then.

youtu.be/dUXBCTWv10U
*sniffles*

youtube.com/watch?v=bfLZfyphg0M

Sure, but they still played videos from "Sonic Temple" on _120_Minutes_, which was kind-of an institution back then. I used to tape _120_Minutes_ on VHS, then record the songs onto a cassette, and listen to that instead of the radio.

hoooly shit this movie

One of the first Playboys I ever had (used to trade Car and Drivers for Playboys with our school bus driver)

>ergo The Dead Milkmen

I like you, Stewart. You're not like the other people here, in the trailer park.

...

nice!
I watched both headbangers ball and 120 minutes. Buddies used to get so pissed at 120 minutes but a lot of great music was to be had.

brilliant m8

It was all just trannys and switchblades and drugs.

Nice

Dramarama: Anything, Anything
youtube.com/watch?v=Azj_AjdNWwY

Kate Bush: Deeper Understanding
youtube.com/watch?v=wUrvBfUht2o
(THIS ONE IS SO PRESCIENT IT IS SCARY. Don't listen to the new version or watch the new video - I don't like the way it sounds and the video ruins the stunning quality of the song.)

Neil Young: Computer Cowboy
youtube.com/watch?v=mKkwiQ1cZCw
(Neil Young's electronic album)

Neil Young And The Shocking Pinks: Wonderin'
youtube.com/watch?v=6a6A6oTFdcw
(Neil Young's 50s album - the video has a neat effect from skipping frames.)

Lene Lovitch: Lucky Number
youtube.com/watch?v=KnIJOO__jVo

David & David: Welcome To The Boomtown
youtube.com/watch?v=97wvwuHUMCw

Big Pig: Breakaway
