It's not "somehow." Of course it will still work fine. XP doesn't just stop working.
What to do:
>Update Java
>Update Flash
>Update Adobe Reader
>Check Windows Update, get Malicious Removal Tool
>Put Firefox 28 on it, add NoScript, Ad block Plus (find the Youtube Theater filter for it), and Flash Block)
>Install uTorrent 2.0.4 and get the ipfilter.dat file, encrypt connections, allow legacy unencrypted, disable DHT
>install OpenOffice 3 (while Oracle still had it) don't update it
>Audacity, older version of Media Coder, Virtual Dub 1.9.9
BTW: Windows Movie Maker in XP will do widescreen video editing and saving. There's an option for it.
Defrag, check volume for errors.
Use it and be happy.

You have Internet Exploder's options set wrong. Reset them and you will be able to do all that. Shockwave is outdated - it's Flash Player now.
