Even the "empty" stadiums are still averaging over 15k people in attendance every home game. 81 home games with expensive parking, expensive food and drinks, merchandise, and tv revenue adds up to a good bit of dosh. Then remember shit like stadium naming rights, billboard sales, special suites and season ticket sales, other sponsorship and business deals/partnerships, etc. And you can't forget about revenue sharing which helps out the less profitable teams.
Also, the book Moneyball was literally written about the Athletics and describes how they've remained competitive over the years while only spending a fraction of what many other larger market teams spend on player salaries.
