Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic defect that causes your lungs to overproduce mucus, making it easier and easier to get bronchitis and pnuemonia. It usually starts showing symptoms when you're a child, but I've got a case of the adult onset variety. Means I get maybe another couple of years before I need a double lung transplant. If I don't get one, my lungs will stop working.
It's most commonly caused by half of a gene from the mother and half from a father. Infertility is common but not always the case. When someone carries both halves of the genes there's a damn good chance their offspring can get it.

My cousin died at 23 with it right after she got married. At first the doctors said she wouldn't live past certain ages and she kept proving them wrong. But eventually she succumbed. She got a lung transplant and everything and recovered nicely from the transplant but she still died eventually. She was really pretty.
