Have you seen Mr. In-Between? It's one of my favourite movies. It's hard to describe. It's a dark dramatic romantic action-adventure gangster urban fantasy movie about an assassin who may or may not work for Satan, and is an extended meditation on existentialism. Oh, and the last ten minutes of the movie feel like being punched repeatedly in the stomach.

The Scorcese / Coppola gangster films are highly stylised - playing off the noir mob films from the 1940s. They've informed their own generation of copycat films that have basically fetishised the "sharp suit, slick hair" uniform of gangsters (eg: Reservoir Dogs). But if you think a "real" gangster film has to have carbon copy characters, you're going to miss out on a lot of good stuff.

I used to live in la linea where this shit was filmed (towards the end of the film) and let me tell ya not alot has changed bar some really really shitty tarmac on the roads that are dirt roads on this. most of it is literally the same.
