Poor man's Rolly Porter

Sup I've been messing around with synths a lot lately. I made this in like an hour or so, I'm going to add more percussion. Not sure what else I can do

clyp.it/5p2quoaq

is this good or bad?

sounds dank, yo

how about just not responding to soundcloud posters if they bother you that much. some of us actually do want to hear more than just clip

Jesus Christ. Who the fuck has such a collection of pleb tier synths?

It makes me want to cry, thinking about how much someone spent on all of that gear and it is all utter garbage.

>more than just a clip

You do realize clyps don't have to literally be clips, right?

It compliments the "woman"

I like it user although the kick is a too low and muddy I would use something with a bit more punch to it. I really like the synth textures you have. They give an old school 90's late 80's vibe, something Aphex would use; would you mind telling me what you used?

To stale and to quantized. The first kick sounds out of tune to the rest of the music. You need to liven it up, maybe add an extra synth on top to play melody parts or try a strings section.

it's a uh korg minilogue. so i want the kick to kind of sit below those high synths. you know? but I still want it be slightly punch and noticeable on speakers that don't have a great low end. Do you have recommendations for achieving that? Is it going to me more the EQ of the kick or the EQ of the other sounds?

TR-909 is pleb?

Yes. It sounds like garbage compared to an 808 or Linn LM-1

I'll try it

Well what saw do you use? I would EQ is to add more mid treble.

>clyp.it/2vdn04rn
does this kick sound okay? any tips on improving that specifically?

just thrown this together in an hour as I've just discovered autopan and I'm having a blast with it, so not concerned that it's repetitive or anything.

#
I dont know anything about drum machines but personally I think that percussion is too "boomy" if you know what I mean? lots of reverb on it that isn't EQd?

#
this is great, as far as i'm concerned (no expert), if you mean the vocal sample then it works I reckon

#
no tips since you're clearly better at production than I am, just wanna say this sounds really well done. wish I could make my stuff sound as good, my guitars sound dead compared to those

#
imo the high frequency white noise is a bit too much when it's not ducking in and out

I use Logic. EQing kick drums has always given me the business, i'll add more mid and keep experimenting

Ah I feel you. Kicks are extremely annoying to Eq well. I use fl, how do you like Logic?

I only have used it and Audacity so I don't have much to compare it to. I'm finding it more and more intuitive as I go along, I've used it for about 4 years. I like their drum pack add ons and I have no complaints with the effects. It's definitely bloated though and I'm sure there are plenty of helpful and easy features that I've accidentally neglected.

how do you feel about this?
youtube.com/watch?v=aan_g8G2k3s&feature=youtu.be

proding well is hard

That's why you have to practice, practice, practice!

Sorry if this is somewhere in the OP and I didn't see it, but I want to start producing. I mainly want to make ambient and minimalist electronic. What would be a good DAW and synthesizer for me to start on? Ideally something entry level, but not sacrificing good sound in the process. My total budget is about $1000.

Ableton is usually the go-to. Try it out and see what you think.
I'm assuming with ambient, you'll mostly be using plugins anyways.

Ableton + a good synth VST desu

Most people here like Fruityloops because its babbers first DAW but in the long run Ableton is more flexible and powerful.

>I mainly want to make ambient and minimalist electronic.

2 hrs into a track, was really feeling it, but then over the span of like half an hour it became complete dogshit and i lost all idea of which direction it was going in. how do i cope lads

Always have a mini project on the side to refresh your ears. I mean, imagine listening to the same song for two hours on repeat, shit right? Same when making

Any tips on figuring out the chords of a song?

I'm really bad at music theory and stuff like that, but I really want to replicate this chord progression from a track I like.

I've figured out what key it's in, and the rhythm isn't a problem.

If it's in a major key the 1st 2nd and 4th notes in the scale are major chords, 3rd 5th and 6th are minor and the 7th is diminished. For minor scales, chords would be relative to the 6th note of a major scale. Don't know much about listening for other chord types other then guessing.

>If it's in a major key the 1st 2nd and 4th notes in the scale are major chords

musicians > producers

don't pretend to be someone you are not.

Jbenitex is a great musician.

we are musicians first and then producers. what else would we be working on if not our own music?

I may have brainfarted. 2nd is minor 5th is major.

loops arent really music tho

don't generalize everyone into one stereotype. If you hope to actually make music you need to know the basics of producing and thats what these threads are.

I started as a musicians, did "music technology" at college alongside my history and classic civ. Then I jumped it further and did a BSc in Audio Technology.

Fuck the musical aspect, i've recorded enough bands, had job offers from a studio, i just can't enjoy it as much anymore, i enjoy doing work for bands but sound design, foley, weird sonic shit i did at uni, it's so much more interesting.

I'm working on getting into production companies now, being a freelance sound designer isn't great when you don't have a shit ton of previous work.

Though if you mean producer as in what kids call themselves, FL warriors, then yeah i totally agree with you.

pretty sure we used to have a post clyp.it only rule...

however.

Outer Zero is decent, though the kick sounds a little boxy, lacking weight maybe isn't the right phrase to use but it's lacking something.

As for "No Acid", the snare doesn't really sit right with me, I'd also cut a little more low end out of this harp like synth. Not much, just enough to remove some of that mud.

nice

I've been using Logic since 2009. It's my preferred DAW, before Pro Tools. The included plug-ins with logic are actually very good.

What kinds of kicks are you having problems with?

yeah it was mine, when i was 14.

I wouldn't recommend it.

Here's a short sound effect i've put together in the last 10 mins or so. Had the image of a passing space ship in my head so went with this

clyp.it/bectutge

>He doesn't know what Komplete is

>thinks 500+ gb in """"""instruments"""""" aren't samples wrapped in a vst

Shh

The bass is really loud
But overall Comfy/10

I get you're new and you haven't started any EQ etc.

However just some suggestions for when you do.

Decide which instrument, between the kick and the bass is which one that you want to provide the track with the main source of low end. I personally would use something like this as a reference mix for your track.

youtube.com/watch?v=zK1mLIeXwsQ

So a nice heavy and subby kick with another kick layered to give low mids but also a little bit of crack/snap, around 1khz. So personally i wouldn't have your bass as your main source of lows. Filter up to maybe around 80-120hz +- 20hz or so. and use it to thicken your low mids. let a stomping kcik fill out the weight.

good start mate

I'm
My problem with kick is usually tying to get the kick and 808 bass not to sound to muddy and wobbly and still be heard clearly especially for headsets with shit low end.

here are my clyps
Any feedback would be appreciated.

Okay, got any examples?

I've never actually used 808 style kicks, it's not in the sort of music i do/did.

However this is something i used to do with subs to try and achieve what you want.

One thing i used to do was blend a pure sine sub with an exact copy but using a sawtooth. Then filter out the super lows and some of the highs on the sawtooth, layer that with the sine sub. What you're doing is adding upper harmonics and giving the impression that there's more to be heard and sometimes if done right, it's a good way to get "sub" through on shitty cans. Basically filter out the fundamental and upper harmonics but keep the others.

You could use squares or triangles but they can leave a hollow sound.

Something like this little pic.

So what you're doing is using the Sinewave 808 sound for those with fat speakers. The layered sawtooth is dampened and has it's fundamental frequency (the one that represents the actual note) EQ'd out. That way you're adding the fat sine with the richer sawtooth. Fuck about with that, see what it does for you

How can I make lo fi Hippity Hop beats on Ableton?

Why is chopping samples on Ableton so annoying and tedious?
I just load a sample into sampler, but I'm definitely getting bored of that.
Is there a plug in where you can chop it like how you do on Maschine or FL or the MPCS?

I have some clyps

what are you mixing on, very little low end on those 808s

fl studio, I also dont have studio monitors and mix with my sony headphones so there's that.

I'm trying to achieve a bass sound like this
youtube.com/watch?v=PCDergUJ0QM

Ouch. Okay.

Compress that 808. If you can use a multipressor then even better. Also for FL loads of people post decent FL Wrappers or whatever the presets are called. Look into those. Also give the 808 a longer sustain and release, yours are dropping out too quickly. More sustain than anything. Compression is your friend though.

Thank you for the advice.

rtfm retard. ableton is the easiest for chopping up samples, but obviously you need to read some shit and not just ask to be spoonfed.

no worries. i'm just not up on that aspect. I thought you meant EQing kicks not making them haha.
also i just opened my DAW. never made an 808 bass but is this the kind of sound you're going for?

clyp.it/b2ootaof

Yes somthibg like that but with a bit more punch

okay cool. that's just a few moments in the ES2 synth, honestly i'm not up on 808s. Get on youtube.

how about this then, is this what you're looking for?

clyp.it/1yny3moi

if you have any sub enhancement plug-ins, try them too

>Bought Maschine in a half price sale
>got komplete select with it
>Really liked the sound of the effects vst's
>think about buying a few of the effects bundles, but works out quite expensive
>few months later komplete ultimate is half price
>go to buy it & can get a xrossgrade deal.
>works out cheaper than half price and cheaper than buying the effects bundles I wanted
> still to this day trying to work out how to delete all the samples and presets as just want the instruments, samplers, effects etc without 400gb of fuckking generic samples.
Still was a good deal though and works well as a good basic setup for a studio. Couldn't be happier...apart from all those fucking mega gigs of samples

I obviously know I need to read some shit, which is why I asked you retard.

I've already seen youtube videos on chopping on Ableton, I just cant work with it.
