I think this is mainly about the society of each country, and not about liking or disliking cats and dogs.
If in a country there is a lot of single people who live alone, they will prefer to own cats because a cat can be left alone the 8 hours you work + the 2 hours you spend commuting to and from work, while you cant do the same to a dog.
