Van Halen

Either Steve Vai or John Frusciante

why does he have a bucket on his head?

tosin abasi, and thats just the first person i can think of without seriously pondering

Undisputed GOAT

...

Jimi Hendrix.

he can't take it off

>ITT: Good at guitar == Guitar wankery

This man has created better riffs than every guitarist in this thread combined

Nothing needs to be said.

...

I'd like to dive into Buckethead but I have no idea where to start.

I wouldn't bother. 40 minutes of guitar wankery.

...

Best =/= greatest
In terms of pure skill and technique, Buckethead runs circles around the old greats like Hendrix, Page, Howe, hell even Malmsteen would probably have a hard time keeping up. But his playing isn't creative or thoughtful, it's just really fast and precise.

A good modern-day contrast in my opinion is Omar Rodriguez-Lopez; certainly not as "good" as Buckethead (though he still has chops), but his original sense of rhythm with jazz and traditional Spanish guitar influences helps him carve his own recognisable, unique sound. Rather than just "oh shit that nigga fast"

He can, but I would be really painful

confirmed for not listening to buckethead for more than five minutes

For him.

he's a big guy

Tbh its soulless guitar wnkery. You can't physically make 200+ albums that aren't just about churning out formulaic drivel

for you maybe

Honestly I haven't listened to much more than some of his earlier songs like Soothsayer and a bunch of his live jams (like his one with Les Claypool, he fucking kicks ass in that one). I don't dislike the guy or his music, I just feel he could do more to push him into "great" territory like, say, Hendrix.
Though if he has improved recently please post a song/album, I'd love to be proven wrong. It's just more music for me to listen to!

Why would you include Malmsteen in that list if you're trying to make a point that Buckethead plays fast but isn't creative "like the greats". Swap Buckethead and Malmsteen's places in that sentence and you would've sounded like you actually knew what you were talking about.

Tosin Abasi is a good answer. Incredibly technically proficient, incredibly innovative.

This. From what I've heard, Malmsteen's neo-classical wank tracks are just vehicles for technical exhibitionism. Using him as an example of an "old great" alongside Hendrix and Page is stupid.

for you

Jeez why don't you suck his dick while you're at it

>People still listen to Buckethead

Best of the 21st century inc

He's great, but nah. A very passionate player, yeah, but not best of anything in terms of technical ability OR of creativity.

Correct.

...

He never surpassed his teacher.

Gotta love Paul.

two words:
Frank Zappa

Look for a flowchart on the mu wiki. It's there.

...

Bucket went to like a clinic of his. He's not his teacher.

...

Steve Howe looks like Robert Fripp from the future.

He studied under Gilbert when he was teaching at the GIT in the late '80s. Buckethead also took lessons from Joey Tafolla in the early '90s, who was another student of Paul's.

/thread

None of these guitarists mentioned will ever produce a masterpiece that Soothsayer is, so nice try faggots

steve howe looks like the crypt keeper before he died

Alex is one of my all time favorites. He can kinda shred and play solos that sound really emotional like Gilmour. He also finds the right sound for each song. Especially in the 80's when he was being phased out. He still found a way to draw atention to himself

Dave Mustaine /thread

oh hello, me when I was 14

he is pretty good though. the fact that he re-learned everything after he fucked his hand up is impressive as well.

...

easy, steve vai

ok I will

...oh wait, I can't

this is the most correct answer

can't wait for Erotic Cakes 2
I'll listen to it while playing HL3

ween is my favorite band and this is untrue

you mean Pebber?

There are plenty actually.
Django Reinhardt, Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery, Pat Metheny, Andrés Segovia, etc...

Unless you were talking about rock guitarists only in which case who fucking cares they're all bad anyway.
