Everyone where I grew up played soccer as kids, but once we reached high school the vast majority of us stopped.

There's just not generally a strong sense of community or of athleticism needed for local amateur clubs, and those are pretty necessary for major clubs to exist. The only major soccer players have to go through the university route, and that just isn't accessible for enough people.

Most Americans don't live in an area where they can just walk a few minutes to a field for a pickup game. It's a definite shame.

Teenagers think soccer is gay and don't want anything to do with it. They want to play basketball football and even baseball waaaaay more than soccer.

I grew up in the north and people called soccer gay, I can't imagine how much they must hate it in the south.
