Redpill me on why Mike Love is an arshole

Also, were/are any of the other Beach Boys arseholes?

He was a big part of why we didn't get SMiLE til just recently

I mean just look at that smug bastard

I know he's an arsehole, but what has he actually done? I've never looked into it beyond him fucking Smile up (which I don't know how he did) and insisting they stay like an Oldies act and need spoonfeeding.

Mike Love was an asshole in both the context of the band (ridiculed Brian's music, later sued Brian for not giving him enough credit for the music), and life in general (pretty sure he refused to pay for his illegitimate daughter's livesaving surgery, causing her to die).
Dennis was also kind of an asshole, but overall he seemed like a really troubled person (he had a shit childhood while Mike was brought up in a wealthy home and didn't have a physically abusive father like Dennis did) and he loved and supported all of Brian's music, so the fans don't direct their hate at him.
Read this example of how Mike treated Brian.

Damn, that's a sad story. Poor Brian.

>him fucking Smile up (which I don't know how he did)
He berated Van Dyke Parks for "fucking with the formula" by writing about something other than girls and surfing.
Here's something to read about the shitty conclusion to their feud
And something to watch where a qt young Van Dyke Parks talks about how he felt ostracized by Mike Love:
youtube.com/watch?v=tB6JwCmTIEw

Le redpill xD

I'd say Dennis was kind of a prick, because he was an impulsive and violent person and ended up banging his cousin's underage daughter, but he's got a lot of excuses in the form of his parents.

The two people I know Dennis punched out were Mike Love and Charles Manson.

That last part is kind of funny in its pettiness, but yeah, what a wanker

>The two people I know Dennis punched out were Mike Love and Charles Manson.
read this for a description of one of their fights
also, according to VDP Dennis made Manson cry in front of "a lot of hip people"
Yea, part of the reason I love the Mike Love drama is because its so funny/entertaining

Another example of Mike's douchiness, although I'm sure most of you have seen this already, is his obnoxious behavior at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction
First, watch from 1:19 to 2:00, he interrupts Brian's big moment, scaring him and throwing him off in a moment that was already probably causing him anxiety
Then, at about 5:00 on he just starts calling out everyone (including the Beatles) for absolutely no reason
youtube.com/watch?v=oZSAQX2uuUY

also heres the first part of that interview, shows some of the bitterness mike held for brian

The Brian Wilson era:

youtube.com/watch?v=tyOYQ8qfFng

The Mike Love era:

youtube.com/watch?v=iBFsJk6PWu0

I think we all know which era is better...
>HEY NOW

>banging his cousin's underage daughter
banging AND marrying

brian = hillary

mike = trump

brian = not actually real god-tier candidate

bruce = hillary

brian = good

mike = evil

This feels wrong.
These feel like two completely different bands, but it's the same guys.
Not even the Beatles are this level of "WAIT THIS IS THE SAME BAND?"

funny that a big number of boomers remember beach boys for kokomo & surf rock and the younger generation now appreciates stuff like God Only Knows and Surfs Up the more brian-centric songs

Laughs come hard with Auld Lang Syne i guess.

Nah, it's only music fans who think of them as God Only Knows and Surfs Up. I've been laughed it quite a bit for suggesting Beach Boys records to people.

guess i shouldve said young generation who appreciates them

normie youth just POSSIBLY know them as "grandpa's surf band"

i wonder who will be the beach boys of our generation
who will be the singer/band that we remember for their pop hits, even though they went on to do more artsy stuff

Brian=bernie
Mike=hillary

R A D I O H E A D

>The two people I know Dennis punched out were Mike Love and Charles Manson.
and that's why he gets a excuse

I saw Mike Love at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by singing Kokomo really loudly.

I could actually see Mike doing this

What's the context of that gif?

well our beatles are tame impala

who's the beach boys??

The second of these is completely disgusting.

did anyone get this photo to Van Dyke's twitter?

The next line is,
>Over and over the thresher, and hovers the wheatfield

Of all the cryptic lyrics on Smile how do those two not make sense?

The lyrics are just rearranged for surrealism's sake.

>redpill
this is a cuck board, user

someone do it

Just because Kevin sounds a bit like Lennon does NOT mean Tame Impala is the Beatles of our generation.

>sounds like beatles
>psych rock
>invokes 60s feeling
>popular among teen girls
>"not our beatles"
who IS then?

Only three of The Beatles 13 albums were psych.

He'll be fine

but theyre the most well known and acclaimed

you're point?

When people talk about the [insert artist/band] of a generation, they're referring to an artist of a similar stature for the generation, not someone who has similar aesthetics.

It's from the music video for Sound of Summer, one of their shitty 80s singles.
youtube.com/watch?v=iBFsJk6PWu0

So Brian and Carl are saints.

Dennis was a tragic asshole

Mike is satan.

What about Al Jardine?

>but theyre the most well known and acclaimed
No Abbey Road and Rubber Soul are not psyche.
>you're point?
If your criteria is based solely on psychedelic characteristics, it's faulty logic because The Beatles were only a psyche band for a short amount of time.

he was just there

Not him, but Sgt. Peppers is definitely much more acclaimed and well known than Rubber Soul.

Revolver is more well known and acclaimed than Rubber Soul.

TRUMPS AMERICA NOW NIGGER -Mike Love

Al's alright
Power rankings:
Brian > Carl > Dennis > Al >>> Mike

Not really.

So are you intentionally trying to sabotage yourself or?

Misdirection

Not they, but yeah, really. Abbey and Pepper's are most acclaimed.

Only one of those are psychedelic. My point still stands.

Without Mike Love we wouldn't have "All I Wanna Do" and for that alone we welcome him into this world with open arms:

youtube.com/watch?v=RO_LX-m74uw

That was mostly Brian though, wasn't it?

I can't picture Mike being the one who wrote that
Is there any proof that Mike ever wrote the MUSIC to anything? I know he wrote the lyrics to a lot of songs, but lets be honest who gives a shit

Brian wrote it, basically, but Mike Love was responsible for digging it out of a bunch of unfinished songs and finishing it.

Mind you, he probably did it cause he needed to fill the space of an album and couldn't write anything worth a damn, but that track is way too beautiful and unique.

honestly thats my favorite song on the album
crazy that so many artists think their masterpieces are throwaways

Al Jardine is the Elf of the band

It's my favorite one too. But let's hear Brian:

"That was one of those songs that had a nice chord pattern, but I think it was a boring song, and I thought it wasn't done right. I thought it should have been softer, with boxed guitars."

In 2000, he called the song "a real nice one".

he used to be an elf, now hes graduated to goblin status
brian seems to dislike/criticize a lot of his music
i think i remember him saying he didnt like sail on sailor either

how tall is al anyways

5' 5"

is brian the only tall musician

is it weird that the most republican beach boy ended up with a black single mom

he looks like a crossbreed between Trump and Scaruffi

is "redpill me" not a common reference/phrase?
is there some connotation to it that i don't know about that makes it bad?

highly believeable story

i believe it. it might be exaggerated a little bit, but overall it could be true
and dennis wasnt the only wilson brother that punched out mike. this excerpt is from briwi's new book

wrong. drugs and mental illness were the reason. Mike tried to save Brian from the jew drug pushers and hangers on

Mikes Best;

All I wanna do
Big Sur
Arent you glad
Thats not me
Kiss me baby
Please Let me Wonder
Meant for you

source?

this is at least believable. the previous excerpt sounds like a juiced up showbiz story.

also i doubt the story about dennis beating up manson. he was scared enough of him to move out of his house on sunset rather than directly evict him.

>Brian's big moment
The band was being inducted, not Brian. I would have like to hear more from Carl tbqh. Mike brings an interesting dynamic to the group. Brian would probably never have had the guts to go public with his music without Mike;s extroversion

i dont know about that.
brian was in a band in high school without mike, and they performed at a talent show
i know that doesnt sound like much but its the only example i can think of from before he got into a band with mike

>The band was being inducted, not Brian
>The band
You mean Brian's band? :)

To me it seems like Dennis never thought before doing anything. Crashing cars, inviting cultists to his house, punching murderers and bandmates, jumping in the sea to try to recover some shit he threw there 10 years before... So I believe the Dennis punching Charles Manson story, perharps even more than I believe the punching Mike Love one.

Of course, Mike not even reacting to Brian in the other story posted here supports the theory that he was a Beach Boys punching bag. He's a hippie pacifist after all.

Mike only wrote Big Sur on his own (and you know the bootleg 4/4 time that Brian produced is better than the Holland cut).

Mike was never particularly a good songwriter on his own. His solo albums, if you've ever dug them from the shitholes of the internet, are living testament to that.

Brian would be the most unreliable narrator on his own music even if he wasn't crazy. I suspect the man enjoys fucking with reporters/interviewers as a personal hobby.

Dennis was a dog without a bone. Wildcat of a man, like all good rock drummers. Damn fine songwriter though.

I suspect Dennis punched many more people than just Mike or Charlie in his lifetime. When I browsed SmileySmile actively, I remember stories going around about how his vocal decline (compare Pacific Ocean Blue with 'Cuddle Up' off of Carl & the Passions) in the mid 70 was due to getting throat punched and not practicing proper vocal chord healing techniques.

wait so is this mikes version
youtube.com/watch?v=KASDsSaJy64
and this brians version?
youtube.com/watch?v=NX3M77IuDvg
ive always been surprised how much i loved the second one because i always knew it was mike's song, but the first one i dont really like at all

>was due to getting throat punched
fyi, the throat punch your thinking of is probably from when mike love's brother (the 6'8 basketball player) stan love and the beach boys bodyguard rocky pamplin
they really fucked him up

Mike wrote the song full stop, Brian produced the second recording you linked. I think either Carl or Jack Rieley produced the Holland cut.

That was the second time it happened, and it killed Dennis' voice for good. If you happen to stumble across any recordings made after that incident, they are almost un-listenable. It's very sad. The man couldn't sing, couldn't sail, stumbled around with a bottle of hooch begging for scraps. Everyone knew Dennis was on the way out before it happened but nobody stopped to try and save him... Maybe nobody could've saved him.

But the incident I was referring to occurred in late 1973. You can hear the change (+ Wilson's inability to practice proper vocal hearing techniques) on bootleg audience recordings from '74 onward.

youtube.com/watch?v=kJeHcHzGyZQ River Song - 1973

youtu.be/Kve4Sp3FxvI?t=3880 Help Me Rhonda (Dennis taking lead) - 1974

It's a shame the two BB's with the best voices both ended up pissing them away in the mid-70's. Brian from his four packs of ciggies a day, Dennis from his bar brawls.

>River Song - 1973
i didn't know the song was that old. sounds great with the chords less obscured by the bg vocals.

Mike wrote most of All I wanna do. Brian added all the distortion because he thought the song was boring

The opening piano chord to River Song came from an (as of yet) unbooted solo Dennis cut called Ecology, from '71. I've heard it been said that that chord inspired Elton John to write Your Song.

PS: vimeo.com/21000459

Not Ecology, a demo reel that Stephen Desper prepared to demonstrate quad in '71 from various Dennis recordings. I always thought the opening came from Ecology, though.

Mike Love is the greatest musician of the Beach Boys and only Brianfags will tell you otherwise

>the two BB's with the best voices
>Brian from his four packs of ciggies a day, Dennis from his bar brawls
>2 best voices
>Brian, Dennis
Did you forget about someone

Why does his solo stuff suck so much

I love mike love

i didn't say his music was good, just his voice
on the other hand, why was dennis solo stuff so awesome?

why is it so hard to believe dennis punched mike? dennis had energy and mike was a piece of shit. doesn't require that far of a stretch of the imagination.
>beach boys punching bag
no he wasn't, he was the weak tyrant of the beach boys.

>he was the weak tyrant of the beach boys
too true

Carl is my personal favorite and imo the best Beach Boys vocal. Al is very underrated as well. Mike was way better than Dennis.

>Mike was way better than Dennis
elaborate

far better range. Here's mike doing lead and base
youtube.com/watch?v=0EzEhW1VO9M

Mike was a crucial part of the vocal blend while Dennis was frequently excluded from the complex harmonizing
youtube.com/watch?v=uLfhvSvBTX8

Personally I like mike's laid back vocals in contrast to the "perfect" vocals of Brian and Carl and a lesser extent Al
youtube.com/watch?v=6SEZLzEZous
youtube.com/results?search_query=that's not me beach boys

that video of "their hearts were full of spring" is so beautiful
does anyone know if they did any other acapella performances live?

Dennis had a wider range than Mike. Mike topped out at A4 (youtube.com/watch?v=3SIirCB-nII youtube.com/watch?v=RO_LX-m74uw), but Dennis could get all the way to E5 (youtube.com/watch?v=WeW9XFGqo-8) from a low bass of D2 (youtube.com/watch?v=2HPHuhAIPuU). That's three octaves and a whole tone. Dennis' voice was just naturally huskier, and he didn't learn how to use it properly until '67-'68.

Also, Dennis being 'excluded' from the vocal blend is a bit of a repeated myth that doesn't have much in the way of evidence behind it. He was essential to the bass on all the early hits. He just wasn't given leads like Carl, mainly due to shyness about his own voice like Carl.
