Does Daniel Johnston suck or is he the best songwriter of all times?

does Daniel Johnston suck or is he the best songwriter of all times?

Both.

i don't understand why he's good...

amazing songwriter lacking technical ability.
Songs are still great with bad instrumentation.

Listen to:
Hi, how are you
Songs of pain
1990

His music is the most honest you could possibly hear because at the time he had no ego and so he wasn't afraid of showing what he felt. He was also fucked up with schizophrenia

He also shows a certain amount of self awareness and humour in those albums

literally everything I listened from him is ugly, nasty and annoying

he is the only musician who makes me truly sad

I think the songs on Hi, How are you are only good because of his unique voice and how his misery comes through, the crappiness of the instrumentation and recording is almost to his benefit because of that.

Damn, mac demarcos put on some weight

This pretty much sums it up except that I would say in his case that the poor technical ability often comes as a positive

how so? his music is absolutely insufferable. and I'm talking as a fan of Captain Beefheart, Syd Barrett and Charles Manson

It kind of speaks better to the nervous/depressed part of every person I think.
I guess I feel like it makes it more relateable.
To me it makes it feel like he made it more for himself than for anyone else, which I tend to appreciate.

Danial pioneered Lofi and invented indie rock. When you create an entirely new genre that will inspire musicians for decades and have a whole sub-genre formed around it, let me know. Anybody who says Daniel Johnston is shitty is a plebeian; through and through.

>To me it makes it feel like he made it more for himself than for anyone else, which I tend to appreciate
I can agree on that. though I wouldn't say he ever made good albums

I would. Although the performance is not good, the songwriting itself is at times absolutely wonderful, lyrically and musically.
It's very simple, but that's all it needs to be,

I mean I hate to use the same example everyone else always does but Walking the Cow is written so, so well.

indie ruined rock though

>tfw her picture is still on your wall

>indie ruined rock though
No. Rap ruined rock by making it culturally irrelevant.

that is the opinion of a cuck though

It's true though. Less people want to start guitar bands because of the shift of culture. Not saying that it's dead, it's just becoming underground stuff.

it could have gone underground with more grave though.
modern underground bands are 80% hot garbage.

>modern underground bands are 80% hot garbage.
Well then what the fuck are you doing here then?

Stay away from Daniel, Satan.
