Pretty much this here as well. All I had to do was fill out an online form, select that I didn't want to and that's was. It used to be that everyone that didn't have a good reason had to go through basic military training. Our army actually used to be fairly respectable during the height of the cold war.

Maybe Åland, everything else is Finnish by right of self-determination.

Do you really think if Swedes had the capacity to wipe out the Finnic and Baltic languages that were spoken in their Empire they wouldn't have done it? Such an aggressive assimilation policy was only sustainable in an area where Swedes were the majority, which is why Swedes never pursued such policies in areas that were majority non-Swedish.

No. The prime example of aggressive assimilation is not Finland or the forest Finns, it's Scania (conquered by denmark in 1658, lost its autonomy in 1710). Which was absolute majority Danish.

The reason for the forced conversion was to kill off any Scanian desire for reunification with Denmark. There was no such threat in regards to Finland and therefor no reason to pursue an aggressive assimilation.

Their neighbors are pretty much pacifists (sweden hasn't been to war in over 200 years, germany lose every war they start). But as I said, that happened mostly after losing Finland. Though admittedly they'd been treated very poorly for a long time before that. And to say we "wiped" them out is an extreme exaggeration, they still live here and can be plainly seen if you're ever in those regions (which I have been multiple times). They just don't speak the language of their ancestors any more.

Which is a sad thing of course. Sweden was disgustingly harsh on anything non-"proper"-swedish. Not just to other languages but to Swedes, too. For almost a hundred years "language hygiene" was a subject in school with the purpose of wiping out dialects in favor of "standard" swedish (rikssvenska).
