There are theories that the universe contains 10 or 11 dimensions (superstring or m-theory). If you want to imagine a new dimension, just imagine every coordinate on a graph with x y and z as 1 coordinate on a new line. It's difficult to make sense of, but that's pretty much it. You know how string theory works? The theory is that the different quarks (the particles that makes up protons and neutrons) aren't really different quarks, just strings that vibrate different frequencies and therefore different energy levels. So the bottom line is that all matter is made up of tiny vibrating strings. For mathematical reasons these strings need to vibrate in 10 different dimensions. These dimensions would be insanely small, so they're not relevant to us humans. M-theory takes it a bit further and states that every string is attached to a membrane. I can't remember the details but that would imply that these 10 dimensions all happen inside one huge 11th dimension. So huge that it's not relevant to us either. If there's some science nerd to wants to correct me, go ahead. I'm only a layman in this shit.
