You're not that late to the party. I've been on here for about two years, but I just recently started avatarfagging as GrimesCuck a few weeks ago. Since yesterday, there have been anons posting as "GrimesCuck" because they think it gets under my skin. I find it more amusing than irritating, honestly. Mockery is the sincerest form of flattery.

lookin for recs from people, been away from Sup Forums for awhile and I feel like i've been listening to the same shit for like a year.

To get into listening to Onkyo, you should always start with what I call the 'big three'.

Taku Sugimoto - Opposite
Nikos Veliotis, Taku Sugimoto, Kazushige Kinoshita & Taku Unami - Quartet
Sachiko M, Toshimaru Nakamura & Otomo Yoshihide - Good Morning Good Night

Opposite is closer to guitar-improv than anything, is widely considered to be one of the 'first' albums in the movement, but to me seems somewhat bland. Quartet is based in a structure of organic silence, and is my favorite of the three. Good Morning Good Night is the electronic side of Onkyo, focusing on the contrasts between sine waves and subtle turntablism.

Now, based on what you like from those three, you can advance. If you enjoyed the precision and timing of Quartet, or the fact that it was live, look towards more Hibari releases like Ezaki's Trumpet Solos, Compositions for Harp & Sho, or Valved Strings Calculator. Hibari is great for organic EAI, improv and Onkyo. Find artists you like based off these Hibari releases and just browse away at their discogs.
Is Good Morning Good Night your preference? Listen to ISO, Sine Wave Solo, the Improv Meeting at Bar Aoyama, and other Onkyo/EAI stuff from Erstwhile records. Erstwhile has a tendency to be a lot more electronic, touting collabs between Sachiko and Keith Rowe, amongst others.
If Opposite by Sugimoto was your favorite, then his Saritote EPs and the Live in Saritote release would be your next step, followed by your choices of showings on Sugimoto's Slub Records. Cymbal Violin Lapsteel, Unami's Guitar Solo, and At Penguin House by mon.goose (my all-time favorite Onkyo release).

When listening to all this, just remember that Onkyo isn't about image, nor is it challenging to listen to. Onkyo is a highly subjective experience that simply influences the atmosphere of your given setting, and the perception of your own internal thoughts. It's to be understood as a combination between sound and silence, so let it subtly guide you.

I could jam Edu Lobo on many a' summertime walk. It's actually not *too* experimental (I'm juxtaposing it against Walter Franco's Ou Nao for reference) but it's compelling and catchy nonetheless. The second side has some interesting scatting experiments and a choral interlude near the end, which is certainly different for MPB.
This is my favorite track on the album, feel free to give it a listen if you want a neat little preview.
