Honestly, I don't get the hype around this movie. I rewatched it recently to see if I'd been missing something and it was actually worse than I remembered.

I love the DVD commentary on this movie. "It's a period drama about cannibalism with no love interest." How were they even able to make this?

Enjoyment of the movie is really based upon if you like the music / themes or not.

If you like the music and themes, it's a atmospheric Americana epic, with great dialogue about capitalism/religion/pioneering, etc, a beautifully shot film, emotional character study, honestly one of my favorite films ever I have seen it at least 30 times.

If you don't like the music/themes it's just some dude moping around the desert complaining about shit.
