im about to join the navy and im headed to meps tomorrow and need some suggestions for a job, i got a 73 on my asvab and would prefer a job more tech related. Any suggestions would be much appreciated and also any general advice about enlisting/bootcamp/A school would also be much appreciated.

Why the Navy? Just curious.
Anything electrical, air conditioning, welding, or other trades. On the outside you will start at about 25 an hour
bikini inspector? heard its very technical
I heard the navy was the best branch for learning technical skills(except maybe the airforce) and also get to travel the most out of any branch.
Try to go for a top security job, that way you can potentially work for a government agency after your contract for 6 figures a year.
Database administration, then data analysis.
They'll move you up to CIA, NSA quickly.
Enjoy Honolulu!
...
With which you can work for as a civilian and make so much more afterward.
That sounds exactly like the type of thing i want to go into. Do you think a 73 would qualify though for that type of job? Also ive been looking into crypology if you could shine any light on that.
Navy guy for 12 years here, don't do it. Just don't.
If you get CTN and go one enlistment then you'll be good, but otherwise fuck the Navy so hard. The "travel" people tote about the Navy is shitty, short port visits with early curfews and tourist trap areas because that's where all the Sailors can even go to. The Navy also circlejerks history, is more bureaucratic and paperwork-laden than the SS, and brags about how important it is despite not being a major force since WW2.
My only other option at this point is to get some shitty minimum wage job also another huge reason im doing this is for the G.I bill as i would like to go to college after my contract.
Former navy fag here. CT, IT, EM, ET, MM, and HM are pretty solid rates or are good for when you get out. BM is not bad if you like hard work and working with people who all think they are better than others. Avoid shit like CS, OS, LS or SH. I was on a DDG so I dont know too much about air rates. Also if you like hard work and working out consider navy diver. That can help you get some lucrative work if you get out. I was a commercial diver for a while after I got out and one of the best divers I ever met who had the best jobs was a former navy diver.
You have options. Learn a vocational skill and get paid a lot of money for a low-manned position, go to college on loans, or go Coast Guard.
Also I am this user
But this user
knows what he is ta;king about. It would be best if this was a last resort.
I'm not DoD so I don't know their system. General rule of thumb is work your way up from where you start. Working hard > being smart. Cracking cryptography is some Master's-level theoretical mathematician type shit so you won't start there. You'll want to take all the math and then some: Calculus, Linear Algebra, Discrete, etc.
Plugging away at a database is simple shit, just a path to less simple shit. Where combinatorial mathematics and data analysis intersects is where the big money is.
Nice thing about the navy is all the gay sex you could want.
Try tech diver
Thats pretty much the military in general.
You dont pick your job. They pick your job after you sign your life away to be a slave to the government. They tell you retarded shit like 'oh yeah you can do whatever you want kid! you got a bright future!' and similar shit. They'll have you sucking dick if they really want you to. Also, it is only worth it if you go in as a career move OR go to college and become an officer, otherwise, don't become a bullet catcher (or a cum dumpster since you want to be in the navy)
>ASVAB
>73
I didn't even study and got a 99.
Are you half retarded?
Enjoy the engine room
Get out if the military while you still can. You're not completely brain washed yet you can still save yourself
Why would u want to defend a country that doesn't give a shit about you
>73
>engine room.
The average is like 55 so if he got a 73 he will be fine.
You'll get deployed into a war whether or not you agree with it. You'll be brainless! Go to college, be an individual, work towards some thing worthwhile
take anons advice no one cares...
You sign a contract before you leave guaranteeing you a rate or a school. The only way to not get the job is if you cant make it through the school or drop your rate intentional.
I hope you get to read this; I also joined the navy when I was younger and also did not know what job to choose going into meps. I met an older man who asked me what it is I wanted to do with my time in the navy. Since I really had no idea what I wanted to do, this man told me "you're going to be a Seabee." That day I became a BU, a builder, and tracked the world building hospitals in Africa, schools in the Philippines, training in Europe. I had the best time of my life in the Seabees, and I highly encourage you to become one. I'm out now, and a diplomat. But I will always remember my time in the Seabees.
.......Its the navy.......Its really hard to go to a war zone being in the navy.
Thanks for all the replies, as far as the background check should i be worried about a careless driving ticket which i had to appear in court for? Also how important are my refrences for the application i filled out, will they actually be calling them?
Depends on Iif you go for a security clearance. Honestly though Its nothing to worry about. Worst case you can file a waiver..
should have joined the Marine Corps
Marine fag here still will never see combat....and the worst part is we still practice all the crap to prepare us for war.
I think about maiming myself everyday just to get out i'm to much of a pussy tho.
Go Aviation Technician. Weapon systems / power management.
That shit could follow you back into the real world. Its best to just finish up your time and get out.
Don't listen to this fag, get a gun. That's all you need
ive been in the army for 9 years, secret clearance and have an IT job. The background check dont mean shit. I did a lot of stupid shit as teen too. So far I've loved my experience in the military. Choose IT or be a corpsman, youll make a decent wage on the civilian side if you decide to get out. But after your fist contract or durring, go to school and become an officer. And if you decide to stay 20 years, youll get full beneifts when you retire
EOD it was originally what I was going for in the navy
Is it possible to get your bachelors degree while enlisted in the navy? I know you can earn college credits.
Eyy im joining the Navy aswell.
Go ET or Seabees if you want tech related.
Yes
What happened?
The asvab doesn't mean anything. Unless you like memorizing a ton of "useless elsewhere, can't tell anyone" shit...don't be a technical anything.
Go in as a cook. See if you like it then cross rate into what you want after you see it. Yes you can. The recruiter lies.
Advice?
Never
Again
Volunteer
Yourself
Idiot.
>Go in as a cook.
It is impossible to give worse advice. That is the worst job except maybe hull technicians who have to work with the toilets system.
ANYTHING, and i mean ANYTHING
is better than being a BM or undesignated.
>the average
Its a pass/fail cognitive test
Anything under 80 is a bullet sponge or hammer monkey.
Someone had to say it. Sorry OP.
you are an idiot.
Its about how well you do in each category and adding the different scores together to see what is open to you. Its not a pass fail you fucking retard.
military.com
You sound dumb as fuck.
Not everyone has a bad experience.
>absolute top tradeable goods master.
You are an idiot.
>look at my internet links
Yes it is you fucking NUB
Some people learn proper english, you're right. They also don't make light of a 20K background check.
Not everyone passes.
All you did was insult my link to the page that tells you how the test scores affect job options.
Not sure pal. You sound okay, the other guy is a dummy.
N never
A again
V volunteer
Y yourself
All you did was point out how the government scoring sheets for the government test for the government volunteer force are completely upfront and honest.
>>absolute top tradeable goods master.
What?
Just wondering, did you have to get a medical waiver or anything OP? I was just recently denied because my medical waiver for being on ADD medication years ago was rejected.
I'm terrible.
No one on the ship (besides maybe supply) gets their dick sucked harder. If you aren't a tool, you won't even end up washing dishes.
Oh fuck off you little left wing faggot.
The cooks dont was the dishes. The cranks do that. The whole time I worked on the mess decks I watched the whole division get shit on working long hours and having people bitching at them about the quality of the food. Maybe you had different experience but thats what I saw.
>they're going to tell me everything before I sign the paper
Fuck off child.
true but the job is discussed up front see
Almost all MOs are like that. Its what they have outside of meal times.
They have access to food.
They have access to food storage.
Mess routes are permitted to cut berthing and officer country.
You figure it out.
Why the fuck would they do that when in most cases you're going to be dealing with classified shit and you might turn out to be some little fucking pussy who cant cut bootcamp and then immediately goes and blabs about how "TEWWIBLE" the military is online without having any fucking service history?
What a dismissive answer. Your job is discussed insomuch as getting you excited for it. Getting a guaranteed rate...means absolutely nothing else about your enlistment.
Congrats on your guaranteed job title.
Now go clean the head.
Because you're entering into a legally binding contract in which you exempt yourself from the very privileges the public enjoys.
So most of the shock you're referring to is caused by uninformed individuals, actually.
I'd post shell to prove, but you sound like a fucking wog.
There is extra bullshit that comes with any job you take anywhere. The contract just tells you what you will probably be spending most of your time doing.
No, it tells you what kind of patch will be on your arm if you make third class.
There is a lot of extra bullshit that comes with being trapped on a tin can in the middle of the ocean with a piece of paper that says (indirectly, at extremes) that they can kill you if you leave.
Since you LIVE ON that tin can-your job is whatever the man tells you. Not probably, for sure.
Calling bait because your argument is weak, is weak.
IT, ET, or any CT are all great
7th fleet sailor here. All I can say is don't fuck up
>73 general
Kill yourself
Fuck supply.
go aviation. something big like P3's and you wont get stuck on a boat. the better you score in a school means the order you get to pick your orders. also travel is awesome if youre not doing it on a boat.
>one guy telling you to take it easy and feel it out
>whole rest of thread saying high quota MO now!
Recruiters, recruiters everywhere.
Yeah this, don't mess up, especially if you're 7th fleet
Alright bud. Dont know why you are getting so aggressive. You and I just had different experience or different perceptions of our time. Peace.
This whole not drinking thing sucks. Just read about some civilian in oki who got a dui and all those restrictions are supposed to go tomorrow.
Chief give me the good news!
Biggest shitbags I knew.
That's some hippy dippy, argument losing bullcrap right there faggot.
(I'm not your buddy, penis wrangler)
Yeah I only know of one good LS and he is the most junior. All the senior guys and mafia keep fucking him. I hate S-2 the most though...fuckers...
You still can't drink? that's fucked, I heard about the crash but I haven't heard anything else about it, if a civ fucks us over again I'm gonna be pissed
Im tired of arguing. All I wanted to do was try to help out a guy facing what could be a big life decision.
And you failed, horribly. Now shut the fuck up.
YOU CALLED THAT SHITASS A NUB! Kek
Well NRJ and 7th fleet loosened it. You can drink on or off base in a private residence and can't have alcohol in your system in public. On base drinking places like restaurants and all that require a liberty buddy and alcohol sales stop at 22
this is partially true, although this guy is explaining horribly. While you do have a main job, you will be tasked to do menial things such as cleaning. However, everyone (at least enlisted) has at one point done this, including the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy. It's all about putting your time in and learning how to follow direction and know when to shut the fuck up and listen. You will learn a lot about yourself. Nothing is given to you, you have to work for it
was in from 2007 to 2011.
Rate = AZ.
worked on SH-60b
If you have any question, shoot 'em my way user. Once you're out of boot camp / a-school, the navy just feels like another job. Until you deploy of course. But deployment is super fun (IMO)
Well that really isn't too bad. The basic, "until someone fucks the rest of us over" bandaid, huh?
Yeah I'm 7th, I thought you were saying your command still couldn't drink lol
Jesus quit riding my coattails with your idioms and metaphors. I explained it in the way someone inept could understand opposed to your spoonfed horse shit.
"One team one fight."
Nah
One crew one screw
KEK
Volunteer for submarines. Fewer shit heads because they police their own. Also I think you learn more skills applicable to the civilian business world.
>2004
>Joining Navy and now staying overnight at hotel before being bussed to bootcamp.
>sitting at diner table with a few other guys talkin about where we from and stuff
>someone asks "how you guys do on the ASVAB?"
> I was about to say something along the lines" it must be a joke to weed out retards.." But before I can some dude says "45 gonna be a master at arms" other people giving their scores ranging from a 15 to 83.
>Someone turns to me, "how about you?" Oh, I got a 98 I think.
>get to bootcamp and find out 90% of the people I will be serving with are not very bright
The retards are one of the downsides, but there are fewer if you pick nuke.
