It's not. She knows very well how to play her cards. By making herself ugly sometimes, people (esp. paparazzi) can't really shame her for her look. She projects a real, human image (with good and bad things), not a perfect one like most popstars. Remember the big "scandal" when the "perfect" Beyonce had an ugly picture? If that happened to Grimes, no one would care.
Also she implies that she should be judged by her music, not by her look.
