They are practically the same language. The set of revolutions that came in 1848-1849 was probably the high point of Serbian-Croatian relations. The climate was used by the Panslavic linguists to make an agreement in Vienna (1850) that the Serbs and the Croats (this tacitly included Bosnian Muslims, as both sides claimed them as their own) should have a single standard language. It seems that Austria stood behind these efforts, probably as to use Panslavism against Serbia. The standard language, later called Serbo-Croatian (or Croato-Serbian), was based on the dialect of Eastern Herzegovina, a contact area of Serbian and Croatian populations.

It is a very complex question. Prior to the rise of the 18th century, when Slavonia (present-day Croatia north of the Sava) was finally given to Croatia, the Croatian literature was predominantly on the so-called Čakavian dialects. After that the Kajkavian dialects (yellow) got a short primacy, and when the Panslavism gained prominence, the Štokavian dialects, namely the East Herzegovinian dialect, won (green). Some Serbian intelectuals of that time got very angry with the Croats adopting the Štokavian dialect because they saw it as a tool of Croatian expansionism to Bosnia and Herzegovina, but let's not complicate it further.
It is also interesting that the philologists of the 19th century saw Čakavian as the Croatian, Štokavian as the Serbian, and Kajkavian as the Slovene language.
