What is this generation's punk? Or New Wave? Or psychedelic counterculture?

Meme-rap.
The Internet killed subcultures though. With social media platforms like tumblr, Instagram, Pinterest etc people are able to be influenced and take from past subcultures without fully knowing or appreciating them ie. soft grunge, health goth. Actual cultural appropriation.

The big sub cultures of our generation are SJW's/Hipsters/Alt-right with other smaller but equally shitty groups like Bronies and Otakus, fuck my life

There's a band here doing some really good new wave. Straight up New Order and Depeche Mode sounding stuff. Released an album in October.

I saw, or rather, smelled some real life crust punks the other day at work. Took me back.

>The Internet killed subcultures though.

With music communities going more online, the superficial side of subcultures stopped being relevant. So the subcultures are still there, but the dresscode just isn't so important anymore, and often people are in more than one subculture, since the internet doesn't limit them like geography had in the past.

t. sociology student specialising in music sociology

Vaporwave.

>sociology student specialising in music sociology
>pursing a literal meme degree

posting thumbnails triggers me. dont do it

Lots of reasons for the death of subculture

>The Internet made it too easy for people to consume the products of subculture without participating in any

>Most Western countries are socially tolerant for the most part and therefore there's no need for subcultures housing and voicing for alternative lifestyles.

>Society is very individualistic now which is naturally antagonistic to anything collectivized.

It sucks desu. I started noticing this during the late 2000s where I noticed regardless of the show I was at: indie, hardcore, metal: few kids dressed the same as the genre culture. Dad haircuts and flannel everywhere.

If the US keeps going the political correct, I think there could be a conservative counter-culture. Only time will tell.

Music sociology can unlock new and exciting territory in the field of sociology, or at least that's what i said on my proposal :^)

Kind of like how Sup Forums went from a real group to sort of just a website.

Oh bro, they're from my city. Had to double take this cause I so surprised to see it here.

I'm a part of what some people call the "alt-right" and it feels punk as fuck. It feels like an actual counter culture, or rebellion against the PC culture that dominates American colleges.

...

everything is too fucking ironic

...

I agree with the first point.

The second point is dumb.

I guess I agree with the third point. Though it's hard to differentiate myself from society sometimes

My friends and I are alt-right. We talk about it in 3 period english class all the time

>alt-right
>rebellion
u wot m8

That's just the alt right prosecution complex talking. Ignore it.

the alt right is actually fucking retarded, if you want to rebel just accept fascism or fall in line as a cuckservative

it's no better then being genderqueer you're just applying a label for the sake of individuality without any goal beyond offending sjw's (as if that's difficult)

The fact that I said it, and so many of you are reacting with disgust like this proves that I'm right. The alt-right is punk as fuck. Enjoy being politically correct and offended by everything, and convincing yourselves that you're not a part of the mainstream culture :^)

all subcultures are homogenized thanks to the internet. theres not a big difference between a 'hipster' and anything else anymore

Not pc, just cringing

"everyone who disagrees with me is pc" is just as bad as "Everyone who disagrees with me is a fascist"

>there are actually people who feel oppressed by PC culture and that its worth revolting against

You're a spoilt brat

underrated

I'm a part of what some people call the "alt-right" and it feels punk as fuck. It feels like an actual counter culture, or rebellion against the PC culture that dominates American colleges.

Being disliked is not the only element of punk
If that were the case then Kenny G and Nickelback are punk.

This is the genesis of a new meme.

the two positions have been going on since forever I don't know why you think its so special just because it has a different name. How is it counter culture if Trump was voted in anyway?

not this guybut if pc culture implies thought policing, I'm all against it

Unironically, legitimately this: .

People used to care a LOT more about music than they do now. It used to be how you'd all group together. Nowadays with the internet, no one gives a shit (relatively speaking). We're divided along memetic lines, now.

That's why we've got a tonne of mish-mashed/merged musical "genres".
So punk you're in the White House.

Though I really shouldn't throw stones, 'cause I'm the same way with egoism.

I think people tend romanticize the past musical scenes thanks to the journalists and the people who create documentaries about it.

When I first saw docos like american hardcore, I thought it was cool af, they lived like they belonged to a gang. But when I went to my first punk/metal shows, I was a little disappointed, it wasn't different from people just going to see a movie at the theatre.
The most dedicated people I met are just consumers, they buy loads of vinyls, go to concerts several times a week, etc.

the world has become too individualistic/post-fordistic for the existence of prominent subcultures, access to media is prevalent and easy for everyone

nb a social geographer

Yeah the Nazis sure wanted to preserve that Weimar.

>Some of the hottest selling artists in America are memes like country singers
>a Sup Forums shitposter is running the nation

Thank you for your sacrifice.

We wouldn't have made as much fun of without you.

>PC culture that dominates universities
Wow you sure know your stuff!!

Reinforcing cultural bases isn't exactly punk you dumbass. Just fucking commit to being a fascist or a nazi, not this halfway, non-committal shit.

What in the ever-loving fuck does this thread have to do with music?

nothing
its just kids having nostalgia thinking if some sub-culture existed they would have "friends" but in reality they would still be outcast

this desu

please die

Sup Forums-memes have gone too far, some of you impressionable kids actually believe what they are saying.

just leave.

hahahahahaha

they still exist, you retards are just too sheltered to know anything beyond the internet.

>not on the internet
>exists

choose1fgt

You make me and everyone around you sick

quality dubs

its all just blended into "youth culture". everyone just wears "streetwear" now, theres no actual cliques or sub cultures anymore like in the breakfast club movie. its sad really.

the internet has homogenized everyone.

>where have the sub-cultures gone

they still exist. they're subtle. they were all invented by PR and marketing firms and we were bred into them for the sake of easy sales

how is it sad?
now everybody can make friends and hangout with common interest

because those interests were corporatized and nearly always revolve around some consumable product or service

They still exist, they're just cheesy "self-aware and ironic" internet things like Seapunk and Vaporwave.

Except everyone hates eachother nowadays.

this is actually very accurate

hip hop and edm, whether you like it or not

>If the US keeps going the political correct
Uhh

Yeah, you're part of a cult

You're not rebelling anything, you just won an election for a billionaire who is hiring all the "cuckservatives" you were crying about to do his job for him

include me in the screencap

Instead of giving everyone one of two or three "subcultures" to choose from, the music industry is just trying to make every artist appeal to everyone. People are too eclectic (or so they think) and have too much access to everything. Everyone in punk, metal, indie, pop and increasingly hip hop dresses and acts the same way. In fact, in all of these genres being "normal" is now considered a rebellion against old cliches. This is especially true in metal.

What a time to be alive

Please never procreate and just die already. Not because of "muh white race" but because you're a living moron.

Internet is the new subculture

you've been memed, lad.

>PC culture that dominates American colleges
>everyone around you is just partying and fucking without a care in the world

>b-b-but that would be DEGENERACY!1!!
>tfw virgin

Punk. Don't believe the rumors of its death.

but he's right. Today, touting "identitarian" or "alt-right" beliefs, while admittedly cringy, is the only thing left that's actually provocative (apart from radical islamic terrorism, which is the ultimate """counter-culture""" pretty much [not meaning to condone any kind of terrorism in any way])

i think it's safe to say that radical islam is this generations punk

There's no counterculture because there's no culture in the first place. Capitalism has just said its final goodbye to mankind's culture, education and future in the 21st century. We all live inside a dying mechanical monster, no need to pretend anymore it has some redeeming human traits. It does not.

>I'm a part of what some people call the "alt-right" and it feels punk as fuck

Wow I can't believe we have a punk rock president

I find alt-righters etc. laughable too but (You) can't deny that Trump has greatly provoked a lot of people (regardless of whether that's any kind of achievement)

>convincing yourselves that you're not part of the mainstream culture

Exactly! The 19 year old college "'"""Marxists"""" on this board have no idea that they ARE mainstream culture. Everything they believe in, is already accepted.

>Bu-bu-bu Trump is president

The same president who had Peter Thiel speak at his RNC and said he doesn't care about gay marriage.

hey, that's a cool looking hat! :D

look at all the SJW tears replying to this post haha

but kenny g and nickelback are bigger are more widely received than 99% of punk bands?

They're not that subtle. It's all about "lifestyles" and buying product that exemplifies said lifestyle. Consumerism really has gone too far.

DOUBLE DUBS

THE MEMES ARE TOO POWERFUL

Punk subculture evolved and mutated into emo, which got laughed out of the building ten years ago.

>All these replies

Proved his point lads.

Conservative counter culture is an oxymoron, not to say that it isn't possible
