I assume you're including composers and not just performers. I'm not sure there's a better answer than this guy.
Favorite Gershwin composition?
An American in Paris might be the best, IMO.
But this one is a personal favorite of mine: youtube.com
That was nice. Thank you!
Glad you liked it! Just a little context if you aren't familiar with Porgy and Bess, that song is sung by the character Sportin' Life, a no good gambling drifter who's trying to tempt Bess to leave her poor crippled lover Porgy and join him in the city. Out of all the versions I've heard, this one's my favorite because there's a certain jazzy slinkiness to the singer's voice that really suits the character.
I'll also take this chance to recommend Brian Wilson's Gershwin tribute album, which I thought was really great. Here's another Porgy and Bess song in Brian's version:
I enjoyed this one too. Porgy and Bess is an important musical where I'm from. ( South Carolina )
I have wanted to watch the film or see the play. I bought an album of its soundtrack. I have yet to listen to it for some reason!
I should definitely see Porgy and Bess like I have wanted to.
Maybe you can help me: for a while I've been trying to find a musical number where the refrain is something like "I still gets mine." I assumed Porgy and Bess but I'm not sure.
Not sure. It's not immediately familiar, and I'll admit it's been a while since I've listened to the whole thing. This song's the closest thing that comes to mind:
Jerry Seinfeld
Bjork
