Because mainstream art became overly industrialized (EVERYONE is an industry plant, nobody got there through hard work and talent and everyone knows it), underground scenes cannot exist in an internet world because changing trends kill them as soon as they start (thus, underground cult heroes cannot exist), and anyone who gets cult status is an ironic shitposter or unironic weirdo that has an ironic fanbase a la Lil B or 3pac.

It is cool though, it's one of those necessary things to be cool. It shows you're not afraid of taking risks and are willing to live dangerously, on top of looking cool. back in the 60s, 70s, people like Keith Richards were...larger than life, there wasn't so much noise.

That would be portion of 'cool' relating to notoriety or fame, which isn't that important though...those guys back then were actually 'cool' as in not giving a fuck and nonchalant about lots of stuff, and were primarily interested in pussy.

Now musicians are hyper political which makes them insufferable, their image is not creative and everyone is just rehashing stuff these guys came up with for looks, none have the actual critical component which is coolness of personality. Its mostly manufactured cool now, its a facade. Someone like Father John Misty is like Taco Bell or McDonalds of cool.

These 60s/70s dudes made music for musics sake and it was genuine, not now where its seen as a mechanism of money/power, no pop stars write their own music.

People say someone like Keith Richards is a drug addled retard but anyone who knows about him knows he's actually incredibly well read and intelligent, a lot of these stars back inthe day were not only cool in terms of personality, but also highly intelligent which they could use to make relatable music that reached farther down into people than stuff today which is stuff that sounds good for 15 seconds then its forgotten onto the next thing.
