since 2009, almost every time i've seen grime mentioned on Sup Forums it's been either misunderstood and misrepresented, or never moving beyond BIDC, next hype, stormzy, and skepta / jme's latest albums.
ergo, in this thread i'm going to dump a whole load of grime that i personally love and deem "essential". focus here is going to be on bootlegs and sets, as it arguably should.
wiley's best pirate radio and live moments over the years in mixtape format, compiled and mixed by slackk. everyone knows wiley, as far as i'm concerned this is a masterpiece. selection comes from sets by slimzee, karnage, maximum, tubby and darkside, and includes a clash with doogz and some vintage b2b moments with dizzee.
similar concept to the above. select war charges and b2bs from 2004-2006. fucking hard, and there's even an appearance from big narstie before he became a walking meme. you probably know trim from his tunes with james blake. compiled by the grime historians behind the silverdrizzle youtube channel.
one of the greatest to ever touch mic, holding an entire 40 minute set on his own. monkstar/monkee was 1/3 of newham generals (with d double e and footsie) before he left and dropped music entirely to dedicate himself to islam. came back recently to mixed acclaim.
slackk's favourite live and radio moments of all time, compiled and mixed. extremely, extremely raw. most mcs worth mentioning are included on this, and it even contains chronik (slew dem) at his darkest, infamously going fucking mad while sending for demon and ghetto, and daring anyone to come to the rinse fm studio to shoot him if they feel bad enough.
bootleg of fan favourites by an unknown compiler. esco/escobar, part of the slew dem crew, widely considered one of the greatest mcs to ever do it. sadly murdered in 2009 at age 26. there are some questionable tracks on here such as esco trying his hand at hip-hop, and an extremely bait girl tune (IIRC), but it's mostly quality and there are some legendary moments such as his practice hours freestyle, which you can listen to above.
tipped by slackk as one of the hypest sets ever, so you know it's gas. this is distorted to fuck but, to quote him, "It's the epitome to me of one of them really upfront, dark and moody grime sets, like pure gun lyrics, radio distortion all over it and pulse bass blasts, the lot. I love that set. I can't espouse it enough."
more pirate radio and live moments, this time focusing on the kidz in da hood / boyz in da hood crews. bars from vortex, durrty goodz and crazy titch. volatile.
no sorry. i do keep eyeing copies on discogs though, they're not too much money. maybe one day
more esco, this time featured on a set by NASTY crew, which most mcs have been in at some point (jammer, stormin, demon, kano, d double e, ghetts, marcus nasty...) great set.
more grimetapes. historical radio and live moments from easily the roadest crew in grime. most of these guys either sadly died in gang violence or are now in prison.
Christian White
woiiii
Jason Price
OP is a real roadman. Hoping to get some good shit from here.
another bootleg from the guys @ silverdrizzle, focusing on the crew ruff sqwad - better known to most as tinchy stryder's old crew before he started making pop music. radio and live moments dating back to 2002, plus rare and coveted instrumentals by rapid and XTC (the guy behind functions on the low, the instrumental that stormzy managed to build an entire career on)
no prob my g. the dj magic one? it's a good starting point for sure
last grimetapes compilation for now. SLEW DEM. you've definitely heard tempa t - next hype. this is his crew. violent as fuck bars from tempz, chronik, rage, g-man and esco.
basically kahn & neek's (duo from bristol behind the bandulu label) own grimetapes-style mix, only released on a limited cassette run back in 2012. their favourite radio rips and live moments sourced from all over the place; tape recordings of radio sets, youtube clips, et cetera.
Luke Phillips
never even heard of this. noice
Dylan Brooks
yeah, that one. it's basically all grime i've heard and some skepta stuff. is konnichiwa liked by the grime community? i can imagine it being disliked by purists because of its mainstream appeal and how it often seems closer to other genres, like some really pop rap stuff
i never liked this that much, but it is definitely essential and is namedropped a lot, so you should get to know. lots of bait tunes that have since been overplayed (such as Next Hype), but it's a lively mix of well-known studio tracks that unarguably bang.
Michael Murphy
Yeah man.
I figure you have everything from there and this pic but if you want anything then let me know (or get it off VK or Soulseek, that's probably where I got it from desu).
Some of these mixtapes are fucking terrible though.
Levi Adams
Please don't stop, this is the best thing I have got from Sup Forums in years

Quick question, why is grime so insistent nowadays about distancing itself from hip-hop?
Grime MCing is really different to MCing on other genres like DnB. It has a lot more similarity to hip-hop.
Even Wiley in the early days said that it was kinda like the UK's answer to hip-hop.
And guys like Wiley, Kano, Ghetto, Dot Rotten, etc, are much more comparable to hip-hop rappers than MCs in other electronic genres.
Like obviously it didn't come from hip-hop but it's almost certainly the UK's answer to it. So why is there such a big obsession with keeping it in such a tiny box like other electronic genres.
sick set circa 2003 from one of the legendary sidewinder events. roll deep (wiley, flowdan, riko dan, scratchy, trim, roachee, manga, etc) back to back with NASTY crew. absolute highlight are monkee's bars followed by d double's, dark as fuck. if you were sick of the poor quality like a pussyhole, this one is in flac from a cd rip.
skepta still has respect imo since he's obviously a legendary mc from back when, but by and large konnichiwa was a let-down because it was gassed up for ages and didn't come out for years. plus he put half of it out as singles anyway. i won't even comment on the american trap
Well, the people in the scene like it because it's popular and might make grime more popular. Most people who actually listen to grime hate it, because it's emblematic of the problem with vocal grime in its current state: It's basically trap with a brit accent and a vaguely grime-y delivery.
just to get the baitness out of the way. this mix contains pretty much *every* huge - and subsequently overplayed - grime anthem there is. it starts with german whip ffs. it's bait as fuck, but there are undeniably a lot of large ones and it does what it says on the tin. an essential listen if you're new to grime and want an overview of all the studio hits.
like a lot of people i'm skeptical of grime albums and think they're generally a bit whack for a lot of reasons, but this is the boy in da corner that apparently no one cares about. it's just as good. young dot / dot rotten / zeph ellis / w.e the fuck has done a lot of really shitty music since that's all over the place, but this cd represents him at his best.
yeah got most of it desu, feel free to post your own though geezer
another sidewinder set, this one from 2004 featuring ruff sqwad. gully all round and has stryder on top form. not flac this time, but decent quality (aac itunes standard)
Kevin Reed
I dunno if there's a modern trend to distance themselves from hip-hop, just look at Drake and shit. Maybe it's more just a reaction against "Road Rap" UK Hip-Hop type stuff. I think it's really just that grime is basically just a dance music genre like jungle, whereas hip-hop is its own thing.
bootleg from grimeforum of fan favourites by the legendary crazy titch, easily one of the rawest and most violent mcs, who usually ends up just screaming unintelligably on a set. infamously currently serving 30 years for murder, though rumour is he's doing the time for his cousin/uncle, i forget which. there's a couple of shit tracks but you'll know which are the good ones.
i could write you an essay about this, but basically the answer is nationalism
Anthony Diaz
Might as well ask here since IOMG is useless, anyone know the remix of Bambounou & French Fries - Hugz played here:
In the early days the whole point of Grime was that it was the UK's own thing and it's own scene, so they didn't want to make Hip-Hop. Then when MCs realised they could make shitload more money by making Hip-Hop, they switched to that kind of style. The current scene is an attempt to go back to the origin but has failed spectacularly by MCs insisting on MCing over shit Trap instrumentals.
Wiley's interview where he talked about him being similar to a Hip-Hop MC was in relation to him being able to put out an LP compared to other MCs only being able to be on sets and at raves.
MCing in electronic sub-genres is all wildly different, in Hardcore it's all short burts to get the crowd hype, in Jungle and D&B it's all a rip-off of Stevie Hyper D and in UK Garage and Dubstep it's all like So Solid Crew/PAUG/Haertless crew's style and delivery (and totally shit bars half the time).
geeneus (aka wizzbit and centurions) is legendary. sick producer, sick dj, and founded rinse fm with slimzee. this set has some amazing + classic tunes on it, such as most of the zodiac series, but the only drawback is there's an mc sporadically cutting in who is a bit shit. this mix cd was done for deuce magazine.
Jason Bell
yeah but that's not grime
when grime became a thing he didn't sound like that anymore, he sounded a lot more like a traditional rapper
grime mc'ing has more in common with rapping than it does with that video
legendary set, well-known. god's gift has been spitting since day, so get to know.
Logan Reyes
What is your favorite bar of all time Grime dude?
Juan Jones
Oopsy daisy I hurt you again Crushed your heart in the palm of my hands If you walk out baby I'll understand 'Cause all I'll do is hurt you again
Yeah, and again, and again, oops, there we go again We messed up once I messed up twice How many times are we gonna try again Girl it's like round and round we go [hustle] I'd prefer if you left me alone 'Cause I can't take the pain and my heartbeat feels like an 808

I've already uploaded some shit in my Mega folder but not loads.
Shouldn't even be in this thread, I've got shit to do that I've been putting off months and I was going to start it tonight. Instead I'm now probably going to listen to loads of Crazy Titch.
huge sidewinder set featuring the two very best with slimzee on deck. three of grime's heroes doing seminal stuff.
impossible question but the last ones to make me do a total double take were merky ace's openers on youtube.com/watch?v=HDjUJ7lw_9g
>you'll get your headtop filled with lead >get burnt for your dough that's toast for your bread >better just jam before you get spread
>try set me up on field i got knowledge >four or five flows is asian thats longage >over your head like strawberry porridge >roll with a dog all day like wallace >got fire in my camp and i spray that like knowledge >licked a couple times so i know what a slog is >come to set on my ones and ill hog it >anyone hands me an mc and ill drop him
and also
Aaron Taylor
In all honestly Chip is honestly one of the best out right now and it's not close.
you know skepta, obviously. while people are divided over his recent doings, he remains a legendary mc who can gas people up like no one else. top set.
this was so fucking mad and trim's earthworm bars were hilarious too, top set
i've said it before but rocks has the potential to put out a game-changing record
macabre unit are sick, basically. they had a revolving lineup of about a million people over the years, with the mainstays being r.demon and 9ner. this studio set is legendary and oft referenced, listen well. there is another version of this set doing rounds that is split into tracks, but it's worse quality.
.bruv i made this thread for yutes like you. *this* is the grime chart.
from 2006 to 2007 wiley put out a whole bunch of vocal mixtapes (and another in 2008) under the eskiboy alias, of varying quality. thankfully logan sama compiled the best tunes from all of them into an easy to navigate 2xCD mix. top. there's a few features from frisco, JME, scratchy and others.
Nicholas Hernandez
>bruv i made this thread for yutes like you. *this* is the grime chart. I can't really conveniently save this thread on my computer for later.
compilation of most of the wiley kat 12"s, dating back to 2002. seminal, seminal CLASSIC tunes from the godfather of grime. this is the eski sound.
Eli Flores
Speaking of which, Rocks fits with the point I made earlier with Rocks is a rapper. He raps over grime instrumentals yes but the way the guy MCs shares so much more in common with hip-hop than it does the genres grime originated from like jungle or garage.
For the most part, a grime MC is also a rapper. While MCs of other genres wouldn't really be considered rappers.
Jordan Moore
I only want instrumentals pls Can you have recs?
Blake Howard
Do you have Roll Deep - Bounce instrumental? I need it to complete my Wiley Kat Recordings label collection.
formative grime tracks from youngstar of musical mob, say nuttin. pulse x is widely considered to be one of the first grime tunes ever. that achievement aside, he never put out a bad track and they're all just as good as each other.
they're coming now. won't be much new stuff itt by the way
probably, but i can't remember what it's fucking called. ninj will definitely know though
more classic tunes from 2003 - 2006, remastered and re-released in full quality. rapid and dirty danger put out some of the most timeless and downright mean grime records back in day. one you will recognise is XTC's "functions on the low", now unfortunately probably the baitest tune of all time thanks to stormzy. (youtube.com/watch?v=nHLPU66yLFY)
Evan Taylor
big up OP
i'm what you'd call a new to grime faggot, but i've been into /bleep/ for years. mainly techno and house, but i've been listenin to a bit more 140 stuff recently.
i like the well known shit like boxed, kahn/neek, different circles, local action etc but i've noticed most of it is mainly instrumental and i've onyl ever heard vocal tracks that are produced by those artists and never actually forayed into going through MCs tracks
where would you recommend starting on this?
i'm p much downloading it all but where is best for me to start?
footsie from newham generals was always a badboy producer, and a huge creative force behind the trio. the king original cd series collects all his work.
all of those labels are top-tier and so are kahn & neek. i'm honestly clueless on newer vocal stuff, but mcs/crews i rate right now are YGG, merky ace's lot and big zuu's radar show circle. and obviously rocks foe
innit that's a thread for another day tho
oh fuck me, i was certain it was snowball for some reason... nevermind
Alexander Johnson
shit, sorry dude i didn't mean newer vocal stuff. i meant out of all the stuff you've posted in this thread where would you recommend i start
sorry, should have made it clear
David Brown
It's just called Bounce instrumental, I haven't got it either though.
I'm missing loads of Wiley Kat stuff now that I've looked through it.
bigshot put out some of the rudest grime records there ever was. "stomp" was undeniably his biggest, and like youngstar he never had a bad tune. all of his well-known tracks got compiled and released digitally but i'm too poor right now to actually pay for them and the only ones going around are vbr.
oh no prob. go with both of the grimetapes wheel compilations, they're sick and you'll get a good idea of which mcs you rate, because pretty much everyone is on there.
"UK Grime" is literally just British people rapping over trap instrumentals and adding some Death Grips influence into the beats, lyrics, and rapping delivery style and then pretending it's somehow EDM or something and not just ghetto britbongs aping innovative American hip-hop styles and turning them into complete and utter shit.
classic compilation of grime tunes from the big don plastician (formerly plasticman before richie hawtin forced the name-change), remastered in 2014 and in high quality.
low deep put out some great tunes back in the day, the most well known being "str8 flush" and "cheeky violin", and they only got compiled digitally on a cdr attached to a magazine. thankfully they got ripped. low deep was doing those playful, r&b sampling grime tracks that have been making a comeback recently but there are also some more introspective ones on here.
pictures are mixed up with this
Alexander Ward

i can't tell if this is some great bait or your actually retarded
this compilation of instrumentals from the macabre unit camp from 2002 - present cements them as one of the greatest grime crews ever. 9er can't help but vocal two tunes on here (including "The Formula") which shouldn't bother you too much.
Owen Cruz
I'm not that fussed since I don't have the rest of Wiley Kat Records.
If you want Garage with MCing then listen to any Slimzee/Wiley set from 03 and before.
I have some Garage but don't want to shit up OPs thread with it.
Adrian Mitchell
Every youtube link in this thread proves you wrong

uploading some more right now but my internet is on a long one.
