I posted this on /jp/ a week ago or so and it got some(little) interesting discussion on a thread that's otherwise a circle jerk. Maybe Sup Forums can learn me.

I don't really get the appeal of this group or why people in the western metal industry are giving them such high praise.

First off, the actual band, the talent, is great and apparently, though there are many that get cycled, they're permanent. The music from the stuff I've heard, I think is quite good for what it is.

But the girls: for one they hey lip sync. I've read so many conflicting words on how much they lip sync, but it's never worked in favor of the people who argue things like Su only syncs 2% of the time and MoiMoi only sometimes. From the videos I've seen they do it at least once every time and nothing leads me to believe they don't just always do it. Lame excuses like trying to keep a perfect show so it's too difficult for the girls to choreo and sing properly is bs; singing while doing your thing is part of the show and a part of the talent. If you're just a dancer, particularly in a musical band, I find that pretty devoid in talent.

Sure, the pop singing is catchy but if you're not actually doing it, how are you any better or different than shit pop from the west? Or anywhere, for that matter. Having a godly band backing you doesn't change that.

Second, it's manufactured to sell a product and it's, as a concept with the girls, the antithesis of making music, art, producing content with meaning, and it's dishonest. This goes without saying.

These girls seem to just be the fronting figurehead; not even frontwomen because I just don't see what they offer to the project other than a few pretty faces to do the ugliest part of the job; to sell the concept.

The fusion is certainly partially creative but for all the wrong intentions.

Unless I'm totally missing something. Feel free to fill me in. I will repost again if the thread gets archived since it's at bump limit.

...

>Unless I'm totally missing something. Feel free to fill me in.

A total, intrinsic, misunderstanding of the Japanese music industry, and the Japanese peoples.

In a place where shits like vocaloids are taken seriously enough to have hologram concerts there's nothing there to misunderstand about other than that Japan's music industry is shallow and plagued with waifufags

And yet Babymetal isn't marketing to Japan; it's attempting to push itself westward instead.

They don't lip sync, they just sing over playback. I don't know why but the younger ones are mixed a lot lower than the lead live, and I think it's just to project the lead that much more. The lead only ever lip syncs parts that are obviously not her, like male growl/screams, which is rare. Also there have only been two back up instrumentalists for the last couple years and they rarely played, only if one of the other members has something else going on already.

For the rest, you have to look at Babymetal as a project. People always call it a cash in but that is some of the biggest bullshit ever spewed. The guy who created it is a true blue metal head. He has been a respected producer in the Japanese metal scene for a long time, but metal is small time in Japan(so obviously choosing metal in a world full of idol pop is a bad business move and NOT for money). He got a job with Amuse and he was allocated to the kids division. He saw Suzuka Nakamoto sing, and from that point he envisioned a project around her, the younger girls came along after, whom he also hand picked.

The guy puts a ton of care into his work, and he has a really small close tight-knit group that is involved with everything Babymetal, and that includes the girls. The two younger ones got a writing credit for the first album, they have input into their dance routines, and they created their own "gang sign" for the group.

There are many bands that have members who don't play an instrument, and who are not involved in the creative process at all. Why does it matter that the producer is the creative one? Do you know how manufactured most bands are? If you're on a major label you are probably as manufactured as BM even if you started organically but at least Babymetal is completely honest about it.

1/2

2/2

The reason they get praised is because they paid their dues performing at major metal festivals, where people said they would bottle and boo them off stage, and the girls were aware of this, and they still went out and turned a crowd full of metal heads to give them a standing o and calls for encore.

They proved themselves time and time again, and they met a bunch of artists backstage and what can you say, they love them. They earned their respect and they are super polite and nice and cool. These metal legends/artists view them like the average person views celebrities. Babymetal are "it".

Rob Zombie explained it best

fuck off faggot

There are tons of these by the way. It became apparent that after a while, BM weren't the ones asking artists for pictures, it was the other way around, and one of the girls confirmed this in a Japanese interview.

Corey also threw up their kitsune "gang sign" while performing while Babymetal were watching from the side stage.

Marty Friedman recently said that they have been completely accepted into the metal family.

They are currently opening for Red Hot Chili Peppers, they will open for Guns n Roses next month, and Metallica just announced they will open for them too.

They already opened for Lady Gaga in 2014.

No.

It's directly marketed to the east, which is also taking off in the west.

Don't get ahead of yourself.

Actually, he's kind of right. Ever since they went west, they have mostly been focusing on the West. Japanese fans are jealous. Most of their touring takes place outside Japan.

They do almost zero promo in Japan, almost all of it comes from their western successes.

Did you read what I said? Just because it's taking off here, doesn't mean it's aimed here.

Your pic is probably the most Japanese thing there is.

And yes, I am a fan.

I mean everyone can have opinions. I think Babymetal is shit. They really just play off on the fantasy for grown men and their pedophile dreams.

How much of a fan are you? Almost all of their promo is done in the west. They are definitely aiming here because the creator wants them to be seen as a legitimate metal act and the fan base has mostly been idols in Japan until recently.

They started young but the 2 youngest will be 18 in a few months so..

I haven't paid these girls any attention in years are they legal yet

Also the collab with rob halford of judas priest
youtu.be/KG_fqkyJ-wo

Once they're legal, the other two, they're done.

But really, interest will fall rapidly as they age and they're aging incredibly quickly. What little Japanese that still care about them will drop them and they'll lose their "shiny weird thing" the west has with them. It'll be sooner than later.

They've been around since 2010 and people have been saying this every year.

They are getting much bigger and bigger as they age. They just played back to back sell out concerts at Tokyo Dome, 110,000 tickets. Before then the biggest place they ever played was about 25-30,000. They also are starting to tour with the biggest bands in the world, and they are going to release a live action animated hybrid show from WB, one of the guys being from the 90s Batman animated series.

I love how people always say this with authority but don't actually have the slightest clue. Just look at Perfume, considered their big sister group. They are part of the same company Amuse inc.(that's the mascot in the pic), and they are into their late 20s now(started when they were around 10 like Babymetal) doing J-pop and they are only now trying to break into the West. I saw them in concert recently and they told us their goal is to play Madison Square Garden. They are also idols even though most people don't consider them as such.

>I don't really get the appeal of this group or why people in the western metal industry are giving them such high praise.

Because the shows and music are awesome?

>I just don't see what they offer to the project

They dance, sing and perform small plays, and damn they´re good at it.

>they hey lip sync

they dont.

>it's manufactured to sell a product and it's, as a concept with the girls, the antithesis of making music, art, producing content with meaning, and it's dishonest.

Finding meaning in music is subjective.

>the actual band, the talent, is great
>The music from the stuff I've heard, I think is quite good
>The fusion is certainly partially creative

Um, so basically, there's some hipster elitism inside you that prevents you from enjoying something even if its good?

I know some music that I think it quite good but I find it hollow because of the fact that it's "fake".

What he needs to realize is that Babymetal isn't what he thinks. When I first got into them I researched the hell out of them thinking all the same things people like him did, as well as exploitation, but I soon found out there is nothing sinister here. It's just a passion project with a team of people who go by metal monikers (moametal, su-metal, koba-metal, mikiko-metal etc, even on official credits) that really love being a part of it and putting their stamp on it.

Like I said though, any artist on a major label is going to have a lot of input and direction from the producer/label, especially their image.

Physically, they sure did age noticeably in just the past year. On the most recent Wembly DVD, Moa and Yui are almost as tall as Su now. Moa's face now reminds me of this one JAV porn star that recently retired, Rei Mizuna.

Here's the producer/creator with the instrumentalists being invited on stage by Metallica back in 2014 a year after meeting them when they spotted the girls wearing Metallica parody themed tour shirts
twitter.com/KAZE_3096/status/556967643568013313

creator is on the right

don't see it at all

glo up

I think for me it's more disappointing that the girls are irrelevant save a few pretty faces, that's all. I'd like to like the band fully based on some equal contribution from all members instead of just the backing band.

In my opinion, dancing and even singing just don't carry the same weight of skill or ability that writing or playing an instrument does so I can't respect them for that―based purely off of my own personal convictions.

Thanks fir putting words in my mouth like an imbecile though. Also learn to type, faggot.

>I think for me it's more disappointing that the girls are irrelevant save a few pretty faces
Well that's just bullshit. I explained in detail why so this is pretty annoying when you ask a question, just a long answer, no response, and say that shit anyway.

Anyway, like I said. It's not just the girls. It's an entire project. Watch a live show, it's basically theater. They have lore, a backstory, and they are characters. Everybody plays a part.

Here is the bassists thoughts on your opinion:
"Still, as BABYMETAL's popularity increases, there are also a lot of negative opinions. But more than those opinions, it is more important to concentrate on the happiness fans give you from their hearts, and that "you're doing a job where you're giving more and more people joy."

Our team BABYMETAL is doing something new that has never been done until now.

Dismissals like "Idols with a metal backing band" do not represent what we do on stage.

And the number of fans who enjoy us and give us their support from all over the world continues to grow and at unimaginable speed.

The amazement that we can share this miracle with so many people... priceless.

Great writers write great songs, and they are songs that resound in SU-METAL's heart and in YUIMETAL and MOAMETAL dancing. And the Kami band is devoted to letting this shine, and receives support from the staff and from KOBAMETAL who puts everything together.

And most of all, all the mates who sincerely enjoy themselves and honestly power us up, and always feel that burning passion in their chest.

I think the team is all of us.

No doubt, We are BABYMETAL(o)乂(-^)"

He constantly talks about the girls professionalism and how they inspire the band as well. These guys are all industry vets, among the best in the world at their instrument.

Alright dude, you're their publicist. We get it.

Be annoyed that other people view things differently than you. Neither of us will change the others' opinion on this. You can express your's but ctrl ving various PR statements means nothing to anyone.

It's literally their bassist

>Maybe Sup Forums can learn me.

What's the point of any of your posts here then? You don't want any discussion, you already have your mind made up and are stubborn. Typical.

Of course it's better for a musician to be able to songwrite. Do you hold all frontmen to that standard, though?

Not only frontmen. By his standard, every single member of the band must write all the stuff they play/sing.

I don't even think this guy realizes how much of music is written by only one or two members/producer. Or the more likely scenario, double standard.

Even if everyone could write, if one person is specialized to do it they should be in charge for best results. Probably why that tends to happen.

And that's the case with Babymetal. Although I would like more writing from the girls, and possibly the kami band.

Who says I respect frontman?

No you retard; writing is one aspect of musical ability, as is playing.

In your blind fanboyism, shaking body, and tear-glossed eyes you continue to make yourself look retarded.

calling someone who has a different POV tan you a "retard" makes all your arguments invalid.

Go to sleep. You just lost this discussion

Pretty sure your inability to read and treating a duscussion as a "game" disqualified you hours ago, queer.

You understand little.
