Meh. "Darkness" was fine, just every good thing about it was lifted from other, better movies.
Might I recommend to the plebs of this thread, "House on Haunted Hill," which has "the darkness" show up in Act III and makes for a great creepy horror flick.

It's been years since I've seen it, but like, say... the repeated title cards (theoretically meant to cause rising tension, I suppose) were used in The Shining, and the "creepy monster crawling on the ceiling and the character doesn't see it" is in literally every monster movie.
