OP has a point. I could see why someone would think this way when standards and tastes have changed. Outdated? Absolutely not, since they are highly influential. Dated? Yes. I don't like the term "dated," it implies that films of the past are inherently inferior. If you can understand the context of the time and place in which a movie is made, you can enjoy it just as much as any film made today.
The problem is people that have point of reference to understand the culture of times past, so they unfairly judge these classics by modern standards and expectations that have no place in classic film criticism.
