Sure, Trump's got some hyperbole and some smearing of his own, but he's got a few things working in his favor.
1) Much of what he says about the other candidates is true, or at least basically informationless. Pretty much everything the other candidates say about him is highly exaggerated at best.
2) The mainstream media hates him, but can't stop talking about him, and he doesn't give a fuck. It sounds like they're telling people, "you can't vote for Trump, because he's not our guy."
3) The establishment political parties all hate Trump, and can't stop talking about him, and he doesn't give a shit. It sounds like they're telling people, "you can't vote for this guy, because he's not the established systemic power's guy."
4) Social media is blowing up with hatred for Trump, generally devolving into a constant stream of poorly articulated hatred, and he doesn't give a shit. It sounds like the world is saying, "You can't vote for this guy, because he's not the popular guy."
Trump is the first big candidate in a long time to respond to all that with a "Fuck you, I'm great." The less vocal aspects of society are responding to the whole situation with, "Fuck the media, the establishment, and internet outrage culture, I'll vote for whoever I want."
All the shouting against Trump is only helping him. This election is different than normal, and the anti-Trumpers don't seem to have caught on to that yet.

Very true. He had an easy start. But the fact remains that if you or I had 1 million dollars given to us, we wouldn't be able to turn it into a multi-billion dollar business empire. There are plenty of people out there who've inherited that or more, and 99%+ of them will never even turn it into 100 million dollars. Trying to paint Trump as a business failure is going to get you congratulatory high-fives from other anti-Trumpers, but if anyone is on the fence (or in support of Trump), they're going to look at his success and see your argument as weak, which it is.
And it is because of the fact that so many arguments against him are weak, or merely emotional insults, that people are being pushed into the pro-Trump camp.
