I wouldn't say that, Hesitation Marks was an unexpected album in terms of sound and tone, but it is much better than making the same stuff again and again.
If you were into NIN just because "My screams" then you lost so much more about what NIN had to offer. "Various Methods Of Escape" might be one of the best tracks he put out.

You need to keep in mind as well Trent was interviewed by Rolling Stone the other day and when asked about new NIN this year, he said that the year isn't over yet.

I honestly can't stand Atticus Ross. I've grown so tired of his sound that he sounds generic to me.
Also, I like Trent's voice. The problem is his lyrics especially suffering in recent years. I think he was on the right track with Year Zero.
I doubt there will be a return to Year Zero. It's trendy to get political these days and what Manson would do, is more often then not what Reznor won't do. Remember, Year Zero was released while Manson was in full blown decadent delusions. And even then Year Zero wasn't about the Bush Administration.
