I've been wanting to make a guide to Herbie's albums since I've been on my Herbie journey for the past few months and been having a great time with it.

WHERE TO START WITH HERBIE:

>If you like Standard Jazz & Bop, more straightforward and less experimental
Takin Off (1962)
Inventions and Dimensions (1963) [Makes a lot of use of Samba Percussion]
Empyrean Isles (1964)
Maiden Voyage (1965)
Quartet (1982)

>If you like Experimental
The Mwandishi Trilogy
(Mwandishi, Crossings, and Sextant)

>If you like Funk-Jazz
Fat Albert Rotunda (1969)
Headhunters (1973)
Thrust (1974)
Manchild (1975)
Directstep (1979)
Mr. Hands (1980)

>If you like Disco & Electronic
Sunlight (1978)
Feets Don't Fail me Now (1979)
Future Shock (1983)
Sound System (1984)

>Other Suggestions (Unclassified)
The Prisoner (1969)
Secrets (1976)
The Piano (1979)
Dis Is Da Drum (1993)

Hope this is a good guide.

good guide, user. screencapped for future uses

I'm suprised Mu was the album chose for Don Cherry. I would have expected Brown Rice (Don Cherry) to be the essential of his discography.
Nevertheless it's a fantastic album

About fucking time we had one of these threads again...

Thank you :)

I kind of want to make a visual guide but I don't know how to.

i feel like we should make an essential 2.0 for /jazz/. any other suggestions? i think "portrait in jazz" or "you must believe in spring" are much more suitable to represent bill evans than waltz for debby
i'll do it when i have the time user-kun

h-how did I do

clyp.it/fowf2lze

Thanks man. I still have the latter half of Herbie's career to get through (about 5 albums) so don't feel rushed or anything.

Listening to Gershwins World now.

pretty excellent desu user-kun. what tune is this?

Ok, hot topic coming through but what do you think of ken burns' "jazz" and wynton marsalis?

What's his best /jazz/? Pic related sounds absolutely amazing.
The skill and prowess of each individual player is nothing but marvelous. Everyone is playing out of their minds in this one.

this is pretty good

Update: Listening to Gershwin's World and HOLY FUCK IT'S GOOD

(But my computer nearly opened a virus/ad page when I tried getting a reaction image and I had to ctrl-alt-delete chrome so I'm starting it over)

elaborate on them?
ive only listened to his album with coltrane, and i can say its good

Gershwin's World is good, but it's not that good.
It's definetely not his best, but also not his worst

rec me some smooth jazz albums pls

>It's definetely not his best, but also not his worst
That's a very, VERY general description.
Posting best to worst soon (Minus Gershwin since I just started it)

who is Sup Forums's favorite jazz drummer?

Eh thanks user.. it's polka dots and moonbeams

listened to nothing but jazz all day today.

>Count Basie Swingin the Blues
>Coleman Hawkins Body & Soul
>Dexter Gordon Livve at the Amsterdam Paradiso
>Dizzy Gillespie Complete RCA Victor recordings
>Fats Navarro Ultimate Jazz Archive

yes, just scrolling down my albums alphabetically all day

I legit love Smooth Jazz, this is discrimination!

Ken Burns Jazz was a PBS documentary series from 2000 that was highly controversial for letting major contributor Wynton Marsalis rewrite jazz history so to speak by having the documentary focus 8 of its 10 episodes on Louis Armstrong in some way shape or form and spend 4 episodes on the swing era, while condensing all post 1960 jazz into one episode and writing most of it off as being "not real jazz".

Kenny G's entire discography.

i dont think it matters that much, most of post 60s jazz is fusion and jazz-funk shit anyways

won't let me in

why is it blocked? I used to go all the time

Can someone please upload Monk's Dream to apollo, it's a fucking crime.

But why is that objectively bad though? Would you prefer modern artists simply ape Davis and Coltrane?

How do I get an invite to apollo and is their catalog really that good?

What are Bud Powell's best recordings? where do i start with him

I've been recommended Money Jungle, apart from the obvious duo with Coltrane.

I would give you one if I had one, and if you were part of What.cd. You should learn some stuff about torrenting and audio if you don't know much.

If you have never been part of a tracker, I'd wait until they open interviews up.

What's catalogue was insane, biggest music library of all time. Apollo has had a pretty good jumpstart, with plenty of issues, but still, it's following the good path (mostly)

i dont know a lot of jazz but pic related is my fave, any reccs?

max roach is a god. just start with something in the essentials, or "moanin" by art blakey maybe?

Anything with Clifford Brown and Max Roach together

will check these out! thanks

SPICY HOT OPINONS COMING THROUGH.

your taste is
not bad to be quite honest desu ka
And His Mother Called Him Bill is a personal fav. Ellington at Newport and Far East Suite, are other later career highlights

yeah I've never heard vocal arrangements used so well.

Strange.. try a different browser or something?

why doesnt Sup Forums appreciate jazz more? i dont think ive ever seen a jazz thread before
Spoilers don't work on here but thanks man
nah, I did that before I posted. I don't think it's my ISP since Mega and TPB come right up

you should replace those shitty funk albums with Herbie's sideman recordings. Hub-tones, Speak No Evil, Search For New Land, VSOP the Quintet, pretty much any of his Miles Davis dates.

ayy pepezefrog

bump haha

>funk
>shitty

Pick one (1).

what a cute cat

Bumping.

was this album smooth jazz?

Max Roach. I'm entry level though. I'd be interested in learning of some more good ones.

Has anyone else heard of these guys? I recently discovered them and their new album is amazing.

Check this out

Reminder to check out the /blindfold/ thread tomorrow. We all listen to the mystery playlist, write down our thoughts or guesses about each track and then post them in the thread.

Here's the link to this week's playlist:

just listen to jazz radio instread of dling albums lmao

this is great, thanks user

Why not both?

Jazz thread dying? Not on my watch.

HERBIE PROGRESS:
Just finished pic related. Enjoyed it but it would probably be lower on my chart.

tunein.com/radio/Radio-Free-Georgia-893-s22385/

Here's my local community radio's jazz show. Goes til midnight EST

Has there been a single jazz album made by a female? If there is, is it good?

>reading a jazzthreadguy review of an album
>he describes the playing as "clever"

>jazzthreadguy
How's his Herbie ratings? Any good? I'm reading his RYM now.

>He only rated 2 Herbie albums but they're both 5 stars

I'm ok with him.

Hey Herbie Hancock guy. I'm curious about your origin story. Did you just wake up one day and decide: "From now on my life is going to be all about Herbie Hancock." and that was a big turning point for you or what?

I don't remember the EXACT origin story, to be honest, BUT, here's the general story:

I hear about him during the end of summer this year, I look him up, a lot of his albums had AMAZING album art and I heard he was one of the most versatile Jazz musicians out there.

So I decided 'eh, fuck it, I'll try this guy out'.
I listened to his first 3 albums, got distracted, but then decided to continue the project a few months later, and I've been listening through his albums since.

And (for the most part) I've loved it. I'm listening to Gershwin right now.

Elvin Jones is the GOAT almost anything with him on it is fantastic.

album recommendation?

dubtrack room: dubtrack.fm/join/the-jazz-room

im going to sleep now but just hang around, i'll be back

I'm a big fan of his stuff with Coltrane. Coltrane's Sound is pretty great. Also Check out McCoy Tyner - The Real McCoy there's some especially great Elvin Moments on there.

I'm not huge on this album, but check out this video youtube.com/watch?v=HIH3fNUsbnA

Elvin's drumming leading into Coltrane's solo and right after is so fucking perfect everything is just cohesive and hype.

Almost finished with this album.

Absolutely loved it. Not a bad track on it. Wonderful.

Marian McPartland has made tons of albums and she's pretty nice

hey what are some good places to go see jazz in NYC? I'll be there next month for a few weeks. I've already planned on going to see Fred Hersch at the Vanguard, and maybe catch Christian McBride. I'm looking at the Bluenote and Birdland's schedule and there don't seem to be any artists i recognize or enjoy. Here's the schedule for Smalls, which ive heard good things about. Does anyone know who here would be most worth watching live?

Ari Hoenig
Josh Evans
Billy Drummond
Stacy Dillard
David Gibson

all good choices

...

Dorothy Ashby's hip harp is good

Alice Coltrane made stuff, I wasn't a fan but you might be

Yoko Kanno's Cowboy Bebop and Kids on the Slope work is fantastic

hey lads i need a jazz piece that relies on a pedal tone and heavily uses the lydian mode

can you help me out? id prefer if it was slow too

What jazz do I listen to if I want to leave this planet?

pic related, I've bled Coltrane dry

>Criss Cross jazz theme
idk exactly why but every Criss Cross release I've listened to has never at all interested me. Even though I recognize that they have a diverse catalog with many very talented players something about it just does not sit well.

All the more reason to join in the thread

>Criss Cross

anyone?

i can really only think is modal tunes in dorian and phrygian

Alexander Von Schlippenbach - Globe Unity

Dorothy Ashby
Anna Hogberg - Attack came out this year and kicked asses all around
Shirley Scott - Great Scott! is kinda campy but great fun
Alice Coltrane = god
Bobbi Humphrey had some cool jazz funk
Betty Davis caused Bitches Brew and had some kinda jazz funk shit goin down for a bit
Annette Peacock is GOAT
Carla Bley is one of the best avant-jazz composers/vocalists/pianists I've ever listened to

whatre some really good Cool Jazz albums?

Ive already seen that infographic chart but Im looking for more

Great Winter album right here.

you guys probably get this pretty often but do you have anything similiar to Space Lion off the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack?

youtube.com/watch?v=VcA3cCQfe3s

wrong fucking link KEK
youtube.com/watch?v=WKnVaDwUg5s

...

thanks, m8

This is perfect, any idea where I can find the full album?

Dreams by Fleetwood Mac

...

Frank Zappa used lydian pretty extensively. And of course George Russell himself

Thanks for the recommendations.

I was expecting "women can't do music" meme bullshit.

Herbie Hancock - Sextant

Sun Ra - Landquidity

well for the first contrabass clarinet jazz I ever hear I must say it doesn't really click
but maybe my sound system isn't good enough

what sort of style is it? Anthony Braxton has recorded many times on the contrabass clarinet (as well as contrabass sax, but I'm not familiar with those). it's interesting to say the least.

youtube.com/watch?v=M-Mn8E1MO0I

this is from "In the Tradition." there's another track from there that's a very sinister wild cover of Goodbye Porkpie hat, and the rest is his semi-straight Warne Marsh style on alto. He's done a whole lot more with the instrument most of which I've yet to get too.

>Dis Is Da Drum (1993)
Can be Disco & Electronic as well. Sounds more like that Miles and Easy Mo Bee collabo album. In Herbie's discogs close to Future2Future album. F2F have more millenium sound with house and garage producers. DidD - straight up 90's with beats, acid jazz, trip-hop vibe.

Not a single bud powell recc?
