>TLDR; Can an employer detect activities on their laptop if I boot from a live boot usb?
So I've just started a new job, where they gave me a laptop far superior to my current computational device. I know they would definitely be monitoring activity, and the job involves a fair bit of travel. I've been wondering if I make a bootable usb with a storage partition for persistence, would the corporate overlords be able to monitor my activities?
Not unless there's some spyware in the BIOS. 99.999999999% of employers have no idea how to accomplish that. So, I'd bet you're safe, pervert.
Elijah Ortiz
Highly unlikely. Hardware that could log activity on the nic simply isn't worth the costs to corporate
Mason Perez
No, they won't be able to. If you're extra paranoid, detach the hard drive before booting the USB.
I have heard of some employers figuring out you're using a bootable OS - but it stopped there. They couldn't detect activity on the other OS, only that it had loaded.
Ryder Russell
That's about what I was thinking, any ways to check for said spyware in the BIOS? How else am I supposed to come talk to you disgusting people without losing my job! But yes I am a pervert
Juan Wood
First off, this isn't a reasonable concern. But you'd just need to blow out the firmware. Look for the latest firmware for your laptop and upgrade to it. It'll wipe the spyware and you can tell your employer you were just doing maintenance.
Nathan Miller
If I boot into a linux distro and just not mount the internal drive, would that achieve the same effect? And if I were to use a portable hard drive while using the live boot, is any of this information accessible to the main OS? I know that any external media connected to the main OS is traceable, but I'm not sure in terms of the live boot
Cooper Gray
There are freeware rootkit detectors out there, you don't have to delete their software, you just need to know if it's there
Xavier Sanders
Thanks, user. You've helped subside my paranoia

Any recommendations before I go on a google hunt?

My need for privacy is not quite that extreme, but it is definitely something I've considered. I'm only looking for unmonitored browsing (obviously not on company networks) and the freedom to add torrenting programs and the like
Henry Walker
Tails or The Amnesic Incognito Live System is a security-focused Debian-based Linux distribution aimed at preserving privacy and anonymity. All its outgoing connections are forced to go through Tor, and non-anonymous connections are blocked. The system is designed to be booted as a live DVD or live USB, and will leave no digital footprint on the machine unless explicitly told to do so. The Tor Project has provided financial support for its development.

Good questions op. You know enough to know what to worry about, which is good. Bad place to ask, usually, but you're getting legit answers for some reason.
Jason Thompson
If you want to install stuff on it. Just install linux on a external hard drive. Installing stuff on a persistance live usb is near imposible from my experience. By the way. How are you going to use the laptop
Adam Gonzalez
What do you even plan on doing that you're this paranoid about?
Kevin Gutierrez
I'm fairly technically able, got a number of live usb's already but self teaching linux leaves certain things unanswered.
I also cannot explain the legitimate answers, not all of us faggots are total faggots I guess.
On that note: If I run macchanger and randomise before connecting to a network, will my liveboot session appear to be coming from a different box, which is the case when I do this on my own network, but is there any way to trace back to the original MAC?
To my understanding there's little difference between the two, as long as there's storage space available on the USB, what difference would it make?
Grayson Long
none of your fucking business.
namely porn while out on business trips, watching illegitimately sourced films, a bit of espionage. You know, the usual
Easton Scott
I used a live usb with persistance. Saving things went ok but installing was imposible. Maybe they dont let you get to the system files witch are needed for installing dependencies. And linux installed directly will run faster. Maybe there is a workaround. But I think that directly installing it is better
Jose Scott
Also get a external hard drive. Pen drives have less writes to get wreck, and using it as a system holder will kickly destroy it.
Jose Flores
After some experimentation with my existing live boots, you're right. Installing new software is not working. As far as installing to an external would I be right in saying one would perform normal installation and then direct the install to /sdx/(the external) as opposed to /sda/(the internal drive)?
Jason Ward
Good to know, thanks
Anthony Wood
Yes, do it normally. I have never seen sdx when installing. Idk why. Dont risk it. Get virtualbox, get guest usb and install it there. Also, what distribution are you going to use?. Not to paranoia fuel. But canonical (ubuntu developers) has been exposed for espionaging people on ther distro.
Leo Garcia
x is just a placeholder for whichever usb port the external drive is plugged in to, on my box its usually b, c, d or e, depending on how many drive and usb ports you have.
I've been tinkering with Kali, and I really like the aesthetic of the desktop, plus having all those tools available is nice. I'm sure there's a downside to using it as a 'daily driver' but iI'm not aware of them. Another option is Mint KDE, I've got that installed on one of my cheap run around laptops.
Any recommendations would be valuable. This guy has the right idea, but I'm just looking to be able to create a personal environment on a company(or any other) computer
Nathan Cook
Take it from me user
Don't use your work laptop for non work related things, even when your not outside the office.
I work for a company that has created software that runs silently in the background without you knowing and sends information back to a console managed by your employer.
The best thing you could do would be to download virtual box and do whatever you need to do within a VM
Christian Collins
What are they doing, tracking the bios remotely?. Are you high?. Also, using a vm in the laptop itself would leave more proof that a linux on a external device.
Michael Butler
Are you talking on a BIOS level or just within Windows?
Wouldn't booting from an external drive be more secure than a VM running within a compromised OS?
Jaxon Edwards
I really don't see the point in all this, something like a cheap used thinkpad would solve all your problems and if it's only used for shitposting it'll perform fine.
Aaron Powell
>personal environment on a company computer
There is no such thing. The company could fire you and take back their property without giving you a chance to clear your "personal environment" as long as it is stored on their env. That includes cookies, browsing history, files, etc...
If you are intent on having a "personal environment" on someone else's property you need to be looking into strong encryption so that even if the data ends up in the company's hands they will not be able to access it.
I would not co-mingle your leisure activities with company business if there is this much of a concern. Carry a tablet or extra laptop is probably the safest option.
Samuel Mitchell
Not everyone is rich here boi. Also, the laptop is better that his pc
Adam Perez
Who the fuck is she
Logan Harris
All you literally have to do to fix it is unplug the external hdd and get a magnet. He is not talking about inside the pc, but a external os
Connor Morris
the personal environment would be housed exclusively on a removable media, what information would be stored on the internal drive?
Robert Powell
I have multiple laptops, but I am trying to avoid bringing multiple devices while traveling. I could always bring a tablet, but I am trying to determine if an OS installed on a USB or external drive would leave traces on the internal OS of a laptop.
Juan Mitchell
Different OS dont leave traces on each other.
Benjamin Carter
How bad has Sup Forums gotten that we're more likely to help out a Sup Forumsro than hang out there anymore
Jonathan Harris
This is pretty much the answer I've been looking for. So unless there is some BIOS level rootkit, I will be fine booting from an external drive, where my folders of questionable material will remain in the dark, where they belong
Jack Thomas
If I went to Sup Forums with this problem there would be nothing but ridicule for not already knowing the answer. Sup Forumsros are significantly more reliable for legitimate questions these days.
