The real tragedy is that to solve the migrant crisis, the EU needed more power not less.
The crisis was literally caused by the Big Five not wanting to surrender sovereignty to an Brussels and an EU army and the likes. The EU was only ever going to achieve true democratic institutions if it could also have the same sovereignty as its constituent countries.
That's why migrants simply moved from one country to the next in order to find a way in. because there was no single policy.
We should have supported the EU to let it be like the US federal government.
For those of you who think that would have let more migrants in, several european countries have the same opposition to immigrants as the UK. And having a central government control a continent sized country hardly hurt the USA in that regard
